Historia
Gail Baines is having a bad day. To start, she loses her job—or quits, depending on whom you ask. Tomorrow her daughter, Debbie, is getting married, and she hasn’t even been invited to the spa day organized by the mother of the groom. Then, Gail’s ex-husband, Max, arrives unannounced on her doorstep, carrying a cat, without a place to stay, and without even a suit. But the true crisis lands when Debbie shares with her parents a secret she has just learned about her husband to be. It will not only throw the wedding into question but also stir up Gail and Max’s past.

I love the fact that writers I have read for decades continue to write stories that grow up and old as I do.

What happens?
Revisado: 02-24-25
It’s very rare that a book leaves a cliffhanger at the end. Happy to read next chapter in their story but at a loss to read a book that really doesn’t have an ending.

Historia
Michael is coming undone. Adrift after his wife's departure, he has begun taking himself on long, solitary walks across the English countryside. Becoming ever more reclusive, he’ll do anything to avoid his empty house. Marnie, on the other hand, is stuck. Hiding alone in her London flat, she avoids old friends and any reminders of her rotten, selfish ex-husband. Curled up with a good book, she’s battling the long afternoons of a life that feels like it’s passing her by.

Took a while to catch my interest
Revisado: 01-12-25
I almost gave up on this. Might’ve been better if I had re-read the summary right before I started reading. I couldn’t quite figure out the point of it all until about 1/3 of the way through.
After that, I did get invested in the protagonists. And, it ended up being an interesting, compelling story.

Historia
An off-duty Coast Guardsman is fishing with his family when he calls in some suspicious behavior from a nearby boat. It's a snazzy craft, slick and outfitted with extra horsepower, and is zipping along until it slows to pick up a surfaced diver...a diver who was apparently alone, without his own boat, in the middle of the ocean. None of it makes sense unless there's something hinky going on, and his hunch is proved right when all three Guardsmen who come out to investigate are shot and killed.

Prey-full?
Revisado: 08-04-21
I’ve read most of the Prey series. I think I have finally gotten to the point where they have become too formulaic. I may be done.
This one in particular didn’t have enough interesting twists and turns. The interest value was supposed to be that the ocean was involved? Enough.

Two Stories, Interweaved
Revisado: 11-13-17
I love complex novels, that tell multiple stories that converge in the end. This is one such novel. The fact that it is based on a historical case (that I won't elaborate on as to not be a spoiler) makes the story even more compelling. A great listen.

Historia
Over the course of a 30-year career, Eddie Izzard has proven himself to be a creative chameleon, inhabiting the stage and film and television screens with an unbelievable fervor. Born in Yemen and raised in Ireland, Wales, and postwar England, he lost his mother at the age of six. In his teens he dropped out of university and took to the streets of London as part of a two-man escape act; when his partner went on vacation, Izzard kept busy by inventing a one-man act, and thus a career was ignited.

Love Eddie Izzard? You will love this audiobook!
Revisado: 07-13-17
I was introduced to Eddie Izzard's work in the late 90s. Since then, I have had the opportunity to see him on Broadway, watch his TV series, as well as repeatedly watch his concert DVDs. My only complaint about his work is there is not enough of it to satisfy my appetite. This book not only contributes more content, it gives us a very frank view of Izzard and his life.

Historia
In the brief, golden years of the Edwardian era, the McCosh sisters - Christabel, Ottilie, Rosie, and Sophie - grow up in an idyllic household in the countryside south of London. On one side their neighbors are the proper Pendennis family, recently arrived from Baltimore. On the other side is the Pitt family. In childhood this band is inseparable, but the days of careless camaraderie are brought to an abrupt halt by the outbreak of The Great War, in which everyone will play a part.

Any additional comments?
The name of the author drew me to this new release. I loved his last book. I really like The Dust That Falls From Dreams but the story wasn't as compelling. If you like Downton Abbey, this book will appeal - complex drama with interweaving families during World War I.

Interesting Premise
Revisado: 07-19-13
A very good - though not necessarily great - book.
What's good: Tells a story over 30 years or so. Ties the story to the times.
What's not so good: A little too much stereotyping of Italian- and Jewish-Americans in NY.

Historia
Stoneybridge is a small town on the west coast of Ireland where all the families know one another. When Chicky Starr decides to take an old, decaying mansion set high on the cliffs overlooking the windswept Atlantic Ocean and turn it into a restful place for a holiday by the sea, everyone thinks she is crazy. Helped by Rigger (a bad boy turned good who is handy around the house) and Orla, her niece (a whiz at business), Chicky is finally ready to welcome the first guests to Stone House’s big warm kitchen, log fires, and understated elegant bedrooms.

A Bittersweet Read of Maeve's Final Book
Revisado: 03-11-13
I thoroughly enjoyed this Binchy book, as I have every book she wrote. It was sad to think it would be the last one.
A Week in Winter follows a format that Bichy began a few years back: individual stories in chapters weaved together with a theme. It worked a little better - a little less forced - here than it has in some of the more recent ones.
