Historia
April 12, 1945: After years of bloody conflict in Europe and the Pacific, America is stunned by news of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s death. In an instant, Vice President Harry Truman, who has been kept out of war planning and knows nothing of the top-secret Manhattan Project to develop the world’s first atomic bomb, must assume command of a nation at war on multiple continents—and confront one of the most consequential decisions in history. Countdown 1945 tells the gripping true story of the turbulent days, weeks, and months to follow.

A great perspective on the lead up to Hiroshima.
Revisado: 09-04-21
A great telling of the 116 days from FDR's death, Truman's learning of the Manhattan Project and finally the end of WWII. This book also tells the stories (and back stories) of many of the people involved in the project and, ultimately, the dropping of the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

An excellent yet concise history of a great man
Revisado: 10-15-20
I was really pleased to have learned a little more about A great man, Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Being a student edition it is apparently pared down a bit but it allowed me to finish it during a few shorter trips. Since I am working from home now during this Pandemic I'm driving only an hour or so each week it can be tough to get through many of the longer Audio Books so this was just perfect.
I so admire Dietrich Bonhoeffer and his works, and I am sad that he was taken from us so early and at the hands of such evil people. May his exemple endure for ever.

Historia
Her beauty almost certainly saved her from the rising Nazi party and led to marriage with an Austrian arms dealer. Underestimated in everything else, she overheard the Third Reich's plans while at her husband's side, understanding more than anyone would guess. She devised a plan to flee in disguise from their castle, and the whirlwind escape landed her in Hollywood. She became Hedy Lamarr, screen star.

Fascinating on so many levels.
Revisado: 02-05-20
While I've always known of Hedy Lamarr I've never been too familiar with her movies (I'm not really a big fan of movies from that time period) but I had heard about her work as an inventor and found it intriguing. Now that I've read (listened to) this well-written novel about her life I am even more intrigued than ever. This is a story well worth reading.

This was so fun to listen to even though at times he really bares his soul by letting the listener peek inside to see his vulnerability and insecurity and anxiety. He is so clever and relatable and I hope to hear more from him.

Historia
This live performance of a powerful police procedural comes to life through the artistry of Celeste Lecesne and is accompanied by the original music of Duncan Sheik. Celeste portrays every character in a small Jersey Shore town as they unravel the story of Leonard Pelkey, a tenaciously optimistic and flamboyant 14-year-old boy who has gone missing. A luminous force of nature whose magic is only truly felt once he is gone, Leonard becomes an unexpected inspiration as the town’s citizens question how they live, who they love, and what they leave behind.

At first when I started listening I was considering abandoning it, but it was only a little over an hour long so I decided to give it a go. Boy, am I glad I'd did. This is a quaint little story and the author/narrator really was better than I had ever heard. It was like a one-man play that was all dialogue and no visual. Please listen and enjoy. Youll appreciate the ending.

Favorite Audio Book Thus Far
Revisado: 01-12-20
I've known about this book nearly my entire life but never read it. Having recently listened to a short biography of Harriet Beecher Stowe as told by the famed American Historian David McCullough, I was prompted to add "Uncle Tom's Cabin" to my reading list immediately. I should have done so long ago.
This story is far more important than I could have ever imagined and I'm glad that I finally took the opportunity to listen to this audio book.
Mrs. Stowe tells a beautiful story, which she has written in the most masterful way. Her ability to knit the story together in a such a way - a way that draws the reader in and holds one's interest so keenly; instilling a sense of longing to know what is to come next, as well as a fear that what comes next won't be as we want to hope for. Our talented and skillful narrator, Mr. Powell, has done an outstanding job of bringing her characters to life in a rich and evocative way that rings truly authentic; as though her characters were whispering their stories directly into our ears.
Please read this book or listen to the Audible version and know that in so doing you will receive a glimpse into a part of American history that rings both painful and humbling; sad yet hopeful.
This story may be a work of fiction, but the context and reality are far from that. And, as Mrs. Stowe recounts in the final chapter, they are indeed real stories of real people - they just had different names.

Narrated by Emmy Award–winning actor Martin Sheen, The Home Front: Life in America During World War II takes listeners into the lives of Americans at home—part of the Greatest Generation—who supported the war effort and sustained the country during wartime. The war brought immediate, life-changing shifts: the rationing of meat, dairy products, and sugar; an explosion of war-related jobs; and, despite mixed signals, a greater role for women working outside the home.

I knew Gary Sinise was an ardent supporter of our Military men and women but I had no idea the level and passion of his commitment. The rest of his life story is really worth knowing because I had no idea how many years he worked to get to where he is today and what price he paid along the way.

A great novel about survival
Revisado: 09-19-19
This was a great story. The narration is pretty wonky because the narrator has 2 totally different speaking manners that often switch mid-sentence even not when switching between characters. But once you get past that you'll appreciate this rich, graphic story of survival.
