Historia
November 1911. Lady Emily Hardcastle is celebrating her birthday by seeing a play at the Duke’s Theatre in Bristol with her maid and confidante, the inimitable Flo. Act One is a triumph. Then Act Two opens with a body on stage—a real one. One of the cast has been brutally murdered during the interval. When other matters get in the way of Inspector Sunderland overseeing the case himself, he asks the ever-resourceful Lady H to keep a watchful eye on the suspects—and his police colleagues.

These stories are all a treat. I can’t wait for the next installment of their adventures. Unfortunately, the Great War is pending. I mourn for the village’s losses.

Historia
From the author of Apocalyptic Planet, an unsparing, vivid, revelatory travelogue through prehistory that traces the arrival of the First People in North America 20,000 years ago and the artifacts that enable us to imagine their lives and fates. This book upends our notions of where these people came from and who they were.

This memoir is laced with wonderful stories about the French character, particularly in the world of food, and the way of life that Julia Child embraced so wholeheartedly. Above all, she reveals the kind of spirit and determination, the sheer love of cooking, and the drive to share that with her fellow Americans that made her the extraordinary success she became.

Historia
The fifth mystery in the acclaimed and best-selling Adam Dalgliesh series by “the reigning mistress of murder” (Time), P.D. James. Just recovered from a grave illness, Commander Adam Dalgliesh is called to the bedside of an elderly priest. When Dalgliesh arrives, Father Baddeley is dead. Is it merely his own brush with mortality that causes Dalgliesh to sense the shadow of death about to fall once more?

Another excellent P.D. James book ruined by the histrionics of Penelope Dellaporta. The locations and characters are all very interesting. Dalgliesh is a strong protagonist. But then, there is the screeching! Cover Your Ears.

Revisado: 01-17-22
I enjoy P.D. James’s books, whether audio or reading. However, Ms. Dellaport’s histrionic screeching at every rise in tension. however small, ruined this audiobook for me. She sounds like she is about to break into sobs. Her voicing of the various characters was also weak and ineffective. She should stick to straightforward reading. And it went on for hours! I won’t suffer through another one of her narrations. If she were on stage, I would walk out. She ruined an otherwise good book for me.
The story, as always, is very good,,with excellent character development.

This is a wonderful way to spend an hour and a half. Yo-Yo Ma is a national, no, an international treasure. A universal treasure, for all I know. Not only is he a stunningly talented and curious and open musician, but he is also a stellar human being. The music here is a catalog of international sounds and ideas; Yo-Yo Ma is giving us lessons about what we can do with our humanity. We can use it to enrich and unite our fellow human beings. The history of our species should not be who we can hate and conquer, but who we can cherish and learn from. Love love love him.

Historia
In this gripping narrative history, Laura Spinney traces the overlooked pandemic to reveal how the virus travelled across the globe, exposing mankind's vulnerability and putting our ingenuity to the test. As socially significant as both world wars, the Spanish flu dramatically disrupted - and often permanently altered - global politics, race relations, and family structures while spurring innovation in medicine, religion, and the arts.

2020 Prescience. Pale Rider, the Spanish Flu
Revisado: 04-13-20
This book is incredibly relevant to the times we are now living through. First, it posits another visitation of a deadly pandemic, and here we find ourselves. It is remarkably prescient in that regard. I suppose it was inevitable.
Second, it outlines the possible preventative and mitigation strategies that could have been undertaken to contain it but were not until it was too late, largely for political and religious reasons. Sound familiar?
And third, it shows the historical context of this hideous disease, both pre- and post-pandemic. The pre-pandemic context is very much what we have been contending with in 2020. The post-pandemic context of our current debacle, of course, remains to be seen.
I cannot recommend this book too highly. It is well-researched, and it is written like the most compelling fiction. What a story!

Historia
A psychopath is terrorizing Copenhagen. His calling card is a “chestnut man” - a handmade doll made of matchsticks and two chestnuts - which he leaves at each bloody crime scene. Examining the dolls, forensics makes a shocking discovery - a fingerprint belonging to a young girl, a government minister’s daughter who had been kidnapped and murdered a year ago. A tragic coincidence - or something more twisted? To save innocent lives, a pair of detectives must put aside their differences to piece together the Chestnut Man’s gruesome clues.

This is a gripping book, although longish. The narrator was not the best I have ever heard. He tended to be somewhat flat. When there was action, he just got loud. The story is great. Had me stumped.
