The book ‘Never Never’ has been broken up into 3 parts by Audible. Don’t buy these pieces (parts 1,2,3). The entire book is now available as a single purchase from Audible. Keep searching until you find it.

You need the entire book to follow this story about memory loss and discovery.

The Mercy Thompson books are always good, but this one is among Briggs’ best.

Watching Mercy struggle with her husband’s ex-wife who moves in to escape a dangerous stalker makes Mercy oh so human, struggling between pettiness, aggravation, jealousy, and sympathy. The intricacies of Mercy’s relationships with the female wolves (Arielle, Mary Jo, Honey) all undergo stress and change with Christy in the house.

Tad grows up in this book with Zee locked up in faery land. Wulfe gets even creepier, and the discovery of another coyote walker brings more hazardous adventures with their Coyote father.

All is driven by a very interesting new villain, a volcano god from the Canary Islands. The battle scenes and how they are finally won are surprising and engaging.

I love these books and Lorelei King does a great job bringing them to life with appropriate fear, joy, sarcasm, and accents that bring each character depth and distinctness.
Highly recommended.

What do you do when the sun starts failing due to an alien matter that eats energy for lunch? You call Junior High school science teacher Ryland Grace to the rescue!

Dr Grace is not your typical hero. He is a geek and left academia because he didn’t like the competitive reviews of his alien species theory (the one that brought him attention in the crisis). He is a self-admitted coward who hates weightlessness, is picky about food, and isn’t astronaut material. Yet the future of the world rests on his geeky brain and sloping shoulders.

Andy weir has grown as a story teller since The Martian, although this story is also about a lone scientist alone in space and the bureaucracy back on earth struggling with the Herculean task of saving the world, not just one man on Mars.

The audio book captures Grace’s worries and tone beautifully as well as the musicality of the voice of Rocky, his alien companion in the battle against Taumeba and Astrophage.

If you liked the Martian, you’ll love this book with its flawed characters, the math & science experiments, and the tale of bringing the scientists and politicians of our world together to make journey to another star to save humanity.

Loved it from the first computer voice asking “what’s your name?”

The most violent of the Mercy stories

The first book in the Mercy Thompson series (Moon Called) introduces the major characters and the supernatural world they inhabit. It is the book that hooked me on both the characters and the world of werewolves, vampires, witches and one coyote shapeshifting mechanic named Mercy.

This second book delves deeper into the character of Stephan, vampire and friend to Mercy, and introduces the reality of pure evil in the form of a bloodthirsty sorcerer. I found it chilling and very difficult to read or listen to because the evil in it was overwhelming. This is the only book in the series that I haven’t read multiple times, and I only made it thru once for the continuity in the story.

While all of the Mercy Thompson books (and their counterparts in the Alpha & Omega stories) have a theme of good vs. evil and take us to dark places, this one seemed to spend the most time dwelling in the lair of pure evil and the one Patricia Briggs book that I will never reread.

Exquisitely told story of more than rowing

This wonderful tale of 9 young men at the University of Washington in Seattle who come to crew from the hardships of the Depression is filled with heart and lyrical descriptions of what it means to row a scull together across the water depending on one another when you have nothing left. More than a sports story it tells of the incredible difficult times these boys lived in, the chance at a future that rowing gave them and the growing menace in Germany that would soon engulf them and the world into war.

Edward Herman gives this story a depth and brings it to life with his vocal talents and sense of pacing and volume.

One of the best audio books I’ve listened to.

After reading and listening to the many books, watching two documentaries and multiple movie versions, I have to say that I really liked Ms Soontornvat’s account of the Thai Cave rescue of 2018. It captures all the main characters and stories including the local Thai helpers that are missing from most other accounts. Since it is targeted for children, it is also an easy read and explains technical aspects of the rescue in simple terms without making the reader feel talked down to.

The narration is also well done. It doesn’t require an actor with a host of voices to bring it to life but does require someone who reads and understands both English and Thai terms and names and the narrator does this well.

If you can only read one book on the Thai Cave rescue this a good one. Highly recommended.

Thrilling and True

Rick Stanton uses the Thai cave rescue of 12 boys and their soccer coach as the framework on which to hang a lifetime of underwater cave diving stories. He is open about his successes and failures and the real risks of cave diving as he goes on many rescues of other divers and the joy of exploration for its own sake. I was on the edge of my seat with every chapter.

Stanton reads the introduction and closing chapter with excellent narration by Don Gilet for the bulk of the book. A good choice by the publisher, as Stanton’s more halting style could drag down the excellent narrative if used for the entire 16 hrs.

Highly recommended.

The story here strains in every direction. From the technology of the airplane to the multiple morally corrupt villains to the better than believable pilot. Couldn’t wait for this to be over, but kept hoping any character would become more complex and believable and not just a cartoon cutout setup to make the plot move forward. Ugh.
