Historia
In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Historia
After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he's still in good health, and in one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash.

Strangely Charming
Revisado: 11-28-24
The hundred year old is an understated gentleman who gets a notion to make a break from his nursing home and has some very unusual adventures in his nonplussed way. I found it highly amusing. For me it’s not a laugh out loud humor even though events are outrageous. That made me like it all the more. It’s just my kind of quirky. The narration was good but I reserve all 5 star reviews for very, very few books. I loved this.

Excellent novel about the Vietnam war experience, particularly the female Army nurses. The main character has many terribly difficult experiences with her family, In Vietnam, and upon returning to the U.S.

In six lectures, Dr. Shumway and Dr. Wendler will help you understand the nature of neurodiversity, a growing school of thought that seeks to embrace the range of differences in individual brain function and behaviors rather than “correct” them, with a focus on empathy, acceptance, and accommodation.

And I thought I was sensitive to neurodiversity!
Revisado: 06-10-24
This was extremely helpful in numerous ways. I highly recommend it. Plus it’s short. Just listen. If you resist or feel guilty or defensive, get curious! Why are you reacting that way? Most of us are definitely not in a society or culture that thinks this way so it takes some honesty, humility, awareness and a desire to socially evolve to let these ideas sink in.

Historia
Grigori Aleksandrovich Pechorin is an enigma: arrogant, cocky, melancholic, brave, cynic, romantic, loner, socialite, soldier, free soul, and yet, victim of the world, he eludes definition and remains a mystery to those who know him. Just who is he? And what does he hope to achieve? Evolving from first person to third person, and then into a diary, A Hero of Our Time takes on a variety of forms to interrogate Pechorin's cryptic character and his unusual philosophy, providing breathtaking descriptions of the Caucasus along the way.

Sarcastic Title
Revisado: 04-23-24
Felt unfinished. Story about a man reading a diary of a cruel utterly self serving person who is quite aware of what he is. The diarist vacillates between being prideful of his manipulations and noting that he has wasted his life. He does daring things in part because he doesn’t value his life. Part of it feeling unfinished is that we never return to the reader of the diary. It’s still a well written and rather captivating book… haunting.

Historia
Set on the Mississippi Delta in 1923, this story captures the mind and manners of the Fairchilds, a large aristocratic family, self-contained and elusive as the wind. The vagaries of the Fairchilds are keenly observed, and sometimes harshly judged, by nine-year-old Laura McRaven, a Fairchild cousin who takes The Yellow Dog train to the Delta for Dabney Fairchild’s wedding.

A painful time in history
Revisado: 09-09-23
A tough time to read about. Shallow people and thus largely a tragedy now. The women are especially of their awful times realizing that men are socialized to be brutes but completely submitting, enabling and excusing them. I felt worried for all of their futures. There’s an uncle who seems to be using his charm to groom the main character for his continued sexual exploits. It’s subtle and could be overlooked. I will read some scholarly reviews and learn more about Eudora Welty.

Felt like a talk with a wise best friend. Very few people in manage never having the tendency toward some type of addiction. This book combines the wisdom of AAs 12 steps with the wisdom of the dharma beautifully and accessibly. It is great that this book is in the world! Inspiring! Thank you Kevin for walking the walk and talking the talk ❤️

Great material, mediocre writing
Revisado: 03-19-23
Too bad this book wasn’t written by a better writer. Extremely hard to understand why it wasn’t at least edited better. So many platitudes and overused words. It helped to play it very fast because the stories and the extra details in the well known ones were quite interesting.
