Dukes, Danger and Deception with a Dash of Love and Passion
Revisado: 04-28-24
Manda Collins excels at creating stories of love, passion and mystery. This one brings together the Duke of Langham and Miss Flora Deaver who we first met in An Heiress’s Guide to Deception and Desire. Miss Deaver has kept her true identity from her employer and friends as we learn she is really Miss Poppy Delamare. Poppy is returning home after a two year absence when she learns her sister is being charged with the murder of her husband. The Duke is also visiting the same area to spend time as his country estate to celebrate the birthday of his grandmama. Langham offers to assist Poppy in clearing her sister’s name BUT he wants something in return, a fake engagement to keep all the ladies at bay during his visit. As one can imagine the ruse between the two provides for engaging banter and forbidden passion all while solving the mystery of who killed Poppy’s brother-in-law. Previous characters from Collins’s two previous novels make an appearance which adds to the overall story. If you like Agatha Christie and Emily Henry then you will enjoy this fun, easy and fact-paced read.

Love and family can survive the darkest moments
Revisado: 04-17-24
I don’t have enough words to say how much this book, this story, this family has affected me. I have always had an interest in reading historical fiction and nonfiction about World War II and the sacrifices that were made by so many. In college I took an entire semester about the Holocaust and the devastating consequences of that horrific tragedy. This book shares the story of a Jewish family in Poland, the Kurc family who were separated at the start of WWII and spent years doing whatever it took to survive and reunite. There are so many parts of this history that are hard to read and process but it is necessary that we continue to be mindful of the atrocities that occurred - so we never repeat them. I spent some much of this book in tears - shocked, saddened and overwhelmed with joy. There’s a famous quote about reading “once you have read a book you care about, some part of it is always with you” - this book will forever be a part of me.

Historia
Olivia Strauss is turning thirty-nine. No major milestone. She still considers herself young. At least young enough to assume she has decades (emphasis on the plural) to check the unchecked boxes of her life’s to-do list. Ballerina? Too late. But not too late for poet. Or for reigniting the romantic spark in her marriage, spending more quality time with her son, switching careers, learning to cook, or even dyeing her hair a bright bohemian pink. She’ll get to that one. There’s time—until Olivia’s best friend, Marian, gives her a birthday present she could have lived without.

No matter what particular birthday you might be celebrating this year Olivia’s story will resonate with your own life journey. Her obsessive behavior after learning some shocking news during her 39th birthday sets up a year of change, reflection and growth. It shows that we are never to old or young to start embracing the life we have and living it to the fullest!

Agatha Christie does it again!
Revisado: 04-24-23
As I read/listen my way through the library of Christie’s works, I am amazed how each seems to get better than the one before! I am enjoying getting to know each of her characters and coming back to them in each novel feels like coming home to visit an aunt or uncle and catching up over a cup of tea.

Love Story or Comedy?
Revisado: 02-05-23
Our book club chose Shakespeare‘s Much Ado About Nothing as our February read for the month of love. This is one Shakespeare play that I never got around to reading in high school nor college. I will say that I was struggling through the first act so thought it might be more engaging and easier to follow in audio and I was correct! The language flowed so much more smoothly. I enjoyed the story and think it is both a love story and comedy.

They’ve shared the mundane and the momentous together: trick or treating and binge drinking; Gilligan’s Island reruns and REM concerts; hickeys and heartbreak; surprise Scottish wakes; marriages, infertility, and children. As Ash says, “Edi’s memory is like the back-up hard drive for mine.”

Touching and Funny - simultaneously!
Revisado: 12-11-22
Who knew that reading a book about two BFFs experiencing the end of life together would provide so many laughs? Don’t get me wrong there were plenty of tears shed too but many of those tears were from laughter. Newman shares the relationship between two lifelong friends as one is battling a life-ending illness. It will remind you of some of the dearest friendships you have and hope for friends who will be with you till the end like Ash is for Edi. This one left a mark on my heart.

As I search for more was to educate myself and expand my knowledge of black history and lean into more black voices, I could not have picked a better podcast to start with. This was powerful and the information I learned was new, fascinating and sometimes hard to hear. This is the history we should be teaching and learning about and I applaud Bonnie Greer for her research and the format in which she presented it here. Highly recommend!
