Good series turned repetitive & tedious
Revisado: 04-16-25
To be honest, what began as a lovely series with excellent characters has begun to grow weary. Not because of the story itself nor the characters - most of which I like. My issue is with the fact that the underlying thread is for the most part: rich people are bad, poor people are worthy & being rich isn’t as honorable as being poor, so fight to be poor. It’s absurdity I’d just too much at this point. At book 5 it became obvious but this one was the nail in the coffin. These poor people who chose to be poor once they got to America (book 3) do everything to remain poor rather than seek opportunities available to them. This book is worst because the storyline between Bridget and Cormac is lovely, but Emily and Rory follow the exact same formula and they have zero chemistry. It’s too sappy and stilted. Too unbelievable. I feel like the author is going to move now to tell their story which is the spitting image of their parents. This is where I leave the series. I’ll not be reading more. Too bad. It has such a good start.

Good, but……
Revisado: 04-08-25
I’ve read all of the books in this series so far and have come to Ike a of the characters and their travails. This book made me stop though. While it was very good in some ways, I’ve noticed a pattern in this series. The real heart of their book is that poor people are for the most part good and rich people are for the most part very bad. I could overlook that one sided silliness for awhile but this book made me stop. When good poor people have honorable ways to gain a better life for themselves and more importantly their children and they reject it becomes simply absurd. I’ve never yet met someone fighting to be poor and begging for their children to struggle and go without. The writer has taken her idea of class a bit too far for me. I don’t care if a character is rich or poor, but I’m not keen on reading about characters that are painfully stupid, horribly selfish, or both.

It’s 1836, and Bridget and Cormac have arrived, full of hope, to the city of Boston with their growing family. However, as they adjust to domestic life together for the first time, they face anti-Irish sentiment from the local Americans, as well as a threat to their happiness from a much closer source.

Very good series. This wasn’t my favorite book of the series as it didn’t have much tension. This was a 3.75 overall. Great books do include tension or conflict in my opinion and this book didn’t have any which is why my rating is under 4. . Still it’s a lovely series and I’ve come to enjoy reading about these characters which are very well written. Good writing. Good pacing. Recommeded! On to book 5……

Not bad/not great
Revisado: 03-10-25
The first 3/4 of A Class Apart is a pleasant if oftentimes predictable endeavor. It’s only in the last 1/4 that any real adversity arises to make the book interesting. It was only then that I began to feel invested in the plight of the two main protagonists. Unfortunately that is short lived since the writer, in order to get her characters to her next plot point, abandons a main protagonist’s personality traits. Turning her from strong and passionate to submissive and banal. She does this in order to facilitate getting from point A to point B. That’s a bit of hack writing to me—the easy way out. The writer could’ve done better, I also wasn’t keen on the writer leaving an entirely open ended ending so the reader must buy book two to find resolution. Any writer should respect their readers and make each book a complete book. I love a good trilogy but each book should be able to stand alone. The reader must want to read book two, not be forced into it to find closure to a storyline. The narration was very good. Overall story score: 2.5-3.0. Narration score: 4. Not personally recommended but I can see how people might like this book.

Wow. I am a voracious reader of mainly historical fiction. Once in a while o book comes along that blows me away with its beauty, poignancy, and the talent of the author as a storyteller and as a writer. This is such a book. Thank you to Sharon Maas for writing A Soldiers Girl and to the narrator for her excellence. I will be reading more of Sharon Maas and looking for more Audible books by this narrator. I highly recommend this book!

Revisado: 02-13-25
Wonderful story. Julia Brannan is a fabulous writer and an equally fabulous storyteller. I have loved getting to know Alex (& Duncan and Angus etc etc) in his childhood and youth, prior to Mask of Duplicity and The Jacobite Chronicles. Amazing characters and deep emotional engagement. The narrator’s were all top notch. Historical detail was brilliant as always. I am a Julia Brannan devotee. What a talent!

Revisado: 01-30-25
First and foremost let me start by saying this book was absolutely fantastic. I read the Jacobite Chronicles series in full a few years ago after hearing Diana Gabaldon (Outlander) rave about it. I fell in love with this series from the first. It was written beautifully and the characters were amazing. Recently I found that Julia Brannan wrote some prequels based on her characters lives. I jumped on it immediately. I was not disappointed! This was a beautiful, touching and compelling story. Everything felt spot on in relationship to the characters later in life within the Jacobite Chronicles. The narration was superb as well. Brannan’s historical detail is always top notch and highly researched. I can’t recommend this book highly enough along with the Jacobite Chronicles.
