Above average thriller
Revisado: 04-22-25
I loved the story. I appreciated the trails the author led you on that made you wonder who's who and what's what. The main woman character was played a little over the top but you got used to it. She is a mixture a meekness, naivety, and understated strength. At times, you wonder if women can honestly follow their husband blindly out of love??? You also wonder who is using who. Family lives are in tatters, sibling rivalry, messy kids, lies, etc..
The author holds the denouement tight until the very end. What you thought was wasn't and what you thought wasn't was.
A great listen.

Narration excellent/Story great but
Revisado: 04-01-25
I love the Dan Riley series. I love the characters; I love the plot, and I love the narration. The only drawback is that even though the narrator is excellent, it is very often difficult to know which character is speaking. The inflection does not change much. Apart from that, I highly recommend.

Tedious-Repetitive-Naked and afraid style
Revisado: 08-29-24
It started out in an interesting way. And then....chapter after chapter of the same dialogues. Sometimes you think it might present a twist only to be let down. I like Kiersten Modglin but it seems her creativity got stuck on repeat mode throughout the book. The premise might seem interesting but one can only take so much of the jungle and the same 5 people having the same dialogue day after day. Not Modglin's best for sure. Definitely not a great mystery; more of a psychological treatise. Boringly introspective. Don't expect this book to match her previous ones.

The worst/Not for me/Not a mystery/Dragged on...
Revisado: 07-10-24
I bought this book based on the reviews. I honestly do not understand why people loved this. It started so slow I almost gave up 3 times one hour into it. I kept ploughing through thinking it would get better. It did not. The feelings of the main character based on her recent divorce took precedence and the plot (if any) was an introspective look at life, feeling sorry and moping for life that was. I felt it was a psychological treatise on the effects of divorce. The descriptions of feelings, angst, etc...did not contribute one bit to the development of the story. I finally gave up and got my credit back.
If you are looking an "Agatha Christie" sort of a mystery...forget it. Keep your credit. It has no suspense and no interest.

Revisado: 06-30-24
Started slightly slow. Wondered when the exciting, suspenseful part was coming. The plot gets fully engrossing about 1 third into the story. 2 or 3 times I thought I had figured it out only to be thrown for a loop. Nothing seems as it looks. As the resolution to the mystery unfolds, I was left dumbfounded by the twist I never saw coming; and then came the epilog...completely stunning! Highly recommend!

Pretty Good
Revisado: 09-25-23
The story plot is overall good. It does get quite confusing at times. There are characters introduced that somehow do not seem to tie to the central plot. I had to rewind several times to figure out who was who. I did not like the ending at all. It left me frustrated with the main characters. Ending was not satisfying.

Long and tiresome
Revisado: 04-11-23
I have the following issues with the book:
Highly repetitive thoughts from the main character
Main character is whiney
Hard to comprehend why a self respecting woman would put up with such mental and physical abuse and think she is doing the right thing for her kids
The twists in the plot are highly contrived and unfathomable
Resolution of plot is somewhat surprising until it is questionable
Overall not the best mystery.
I listened to the end but I fell asleep multiple times during the story.
There are better plots out there.

Historia
The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms. As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts. She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.'

Twisted and frustrating
Revisado: 03-07-23
I wonder how many women would give in in this situation. I think the plot gave the main character a weak character driven by fear. The girlfriend has a lot of nerve! I would absolutely not give in to her demands; More avenues seemed open to the wife. In the end, it was entertaining but frustrating.

Great Story BUT
Revisado: 03-07-23
This is a very interesting story with a good plot. Dan Riley is a great detective who really needs to get over the death of his girlfriend and move on in life; there are too many whining, introspective dialogues that get old. The one big issue I had was the foul language; totally unnecessary.

Very Twisted
Revisado: 03-06-23
1. The narrator has issues. She always ends her sentences on an upward sound and is flat; Plough through, the story is worth it.
2. It is hard to comprehend domestic violence and why people seem to think they can never get out of the situation. Get into the character's head; things are not always as clear cut as we think they should be.
3. There are so many twists and turns in the story; also a story told from many points of view. I thought at least 2 or 3 times I had it figured out and....no...
4. The denouement is mind blowing; at least 2 or 3 times you think you have reached the end of the story; beware; the author throws you for a loop til the very end.
