Historia
A Navy captain near the end of a decorated career, Stephen Rensselaer is disciplined, intelligent, and determined always to do what’s right. In defending the development of a new variant of warship, he makes an enemy of the president of the United States, who assigns him to command the doomed line’s only prototype—Athena, Patrol Coastal 15—with the intent to humiliate a man who should have been an admiral. Rather than resign, Rensselaer takes the new assignment in stride.

Excellent literary style in a most engaging story that uses eternal human themes and inspires instead of depresses the reader— what could be better?

Historia
On his last long walk, septuagenarian war hero, deserter, and professor Alessandro Giuliani shares his past with an illiterate young factory worker, spinning a remarkable tale of heart-stopping escapes, of loves unrequited and won, of madmen, dwarfs, and mafiosi. But overshadowing all is his most miraculous and terrible adventure, the Great War: a surreal parade of horrors that devastated and defined Alessandro, yet enabled him to experience fully the magic and beauty of the absurd human comedy called life.

CLOSE TO PERFECT
Revisado: 11-11-23
Mark Helprin is a master. He takes his main character from someone who might be trivial and barely likable to someone the reader appreciates with fantastic depth. My only small criticism of this recording is the narrator‘s slight tone of sarcasm… But as the story goes on, that seems to soften. The same narrator does an excellent job with giving distinct voices to the very many supporting characters . Highly, highly recommend. It is not a single page too long and it’s length makes it a fine bargain for my Audible credit!

Historia
Dr. Whitfield is looking forward to a sabbatical year of peace and quiet, gardening in his backyard, and tinkering with what he calls his latest "unpublishable book". As the year begins, he is drawn by a series of seeming coincidences into involvement with a group of characters from across Europe, including a family that has been the target of assassination attempts by unknown powers. During his journey to Romania, the situation in which he finds himself becomes more sinister than it first seemed.

Disappointed
Revisado: 01-28-23
I expected much more from this author. A slow-moving story that goes nowhere. Could have just written an essay on postmodern culture instead. Narrator invented a plausible voice for the character of Owen and all others are clownish, many are shrill.

Historia
America is a barren landscape of smoldering ashes, devoid of life except for those people still struggling to scratch out some type of existence. Amidst this destruction, a father and his young son walk, always toward the coast, but with no real understanding that circumstances will improve once they arrive. Still, they persevere, and their relationship comes to represent goodness in a world of utter devastation.

Impossible to say in “how many stars?”
Revisado: 08-28-22
What this story is worth. I was only able to listen about 30 minutes at a time and then I would spend some time weeping. This is nothing like “apocalyptic novels “I have read before. There is no romance no adventure and very little “cool information about how to survive a disaster“. If there is “redemption“ it is hidden… Which is truthful. Really a kind of masterpiece. But brutal.

Historia
Middle-aged, married, but living on his own, Prin has lost his way. Desperate for money and purpose, he moves to small-town Indiana to work for an evangelical millionaire who’s building a theme park inspired by Dante’s Inferno. He quickly becomes involved in the difficult lives of his co-workers and in the wider struggles of their opioid-ravaged community while trying to reconcile with his distant wife and distant God. Both projects spin out of control, and when a Black teenager is killed, creationists, politicians and protesters alike descend.

The ending came too soon, but this was a wonderful read, what a combination: Catholic, multicultural good humor and outrageously accurate human portraits. The narrator nailed every voice.

What A Great Long Read For My One Book Credit!
Revisado: 04-19-22
Being about to spend my next credit on a book that will run only 5 hours, how I appreciated this book that I was able to listen to for several weeks while I worked on a project at home! It spans the lifetime of the character and her family in Norway of the 11th century. The narrator does an excellent job of creating voices for both men and women and I was pleasantly surprised that I did not (as I often do) find a female reader’s voice irritating as it went along. Sometimes sentence structure was mid-read but never created any great confusion. As to the content, the author’s interest in Medieval Christian themes was only occasionally “a bit much” for me—- but I did hope for more domestic detail that might have taught me about things like horsemanship, livestock farming without machinery, fiber production, spinning , weaving and sewing, food preparation and ale making, things like that. They were mentioned, but without any of the “DIY” that I would have enjoyed.

Fiver could sense danger. Something terrible was going to happen to the warren; he felt sure of it. They had to leave immediately. So begins a long and perilous journey of survival for a small band of rabbits. As the rabbits skirt danger at every turn, we become acquainted with the band, its humorous characters, and its compelling culture, complete with its own folk history and mythos. Fiver’s vision finally leads them to Watership Down, an upland meadow. But here they face their most difficult challenges of all.

Historia
The emergence of strange new diseases is a frightening problem that seems to be getting worse. In this age of speedy travel, it threatens a worldwide pandemic. We hear news reports of Ebola, SARS, AIDS, and something called Hendra killing horses and people in Australia - but those reports miss the big truth that such phenomena are part of a single pattern. The bugs that transmit these diseases share one thing: they originate in wild animals and pass to humans by a process called spillover. David Quammen tracks this subject around the world.

Listening to this book while “sheltering in place” in California during the COVID 19 epidemic has been unforgettable.
My only criticism is that the reader had very limited ability with foreign words and names, especially French.
