This is a helpful guide with practical examples of identifying shadow in oneself, others, and communities. It offers a good overview of shadow from a Jungian standpoint, but one doesn’t need to be an Jungian analyst or very familiar with Jung to access the material. I would recommend it to anyone who considers themself a spiritual leader or seeker. The great power projected onto roles like priest, swami, rabbi, and imam requires a certain stewardship of power, the failure of which has resulted in great trauma and dissolution in spiritual communities and broader society. This stewardship of power requires great humility, self examination, and raising awareness of psychological dynamics like projection, inflation, and transference. Many leaders are not doing this necessary work, often because they lack the necessary resources, knowledge, and accountability. As a chaplain who must be aware of these dynamics myself, I am so grateful to Connie Zweig and others who led her to these insights.

Warning: This book that may change how you think, not just what you think. I can’t tell you precisely why you might read or listen. But you may become more aware of the limits of your own awareness. You may recover deep feelings of humility, awe, wonder, connection, longing, and belonging. If that sounds interesting, and you can track with a verbose set of observations that span many schools of social science, psychology, theology, and philosophy—then this book is for you.

I feel this is an excellent book and am frustrated to learn that it has been so abridged. Important context, anecdotes and images have been removed to the detriment of the listener. Re-record with the full text, please!

I’m still processing how wonderful this book has been. I think it’s bound to change the ways I relate to others and myself for the better. Wow. Just wow.

A wallop of wisdom

This book is full of practical wisdom to improve well-being, it’s fun to read, and it isn’t too self helpy. The self-help prescriptions are less about strategies and tactics (which can be tiresome if you’re like me) than they are about attitudes and mindsets reinforced through real life examples. David’s anecdotes to illustrate her points are personal, relatable, and cohere around both ancient wisdom and modern research. Very good listen.

This is an important read for anybody with a body and a mind. If I could give a big bear hug to the good doctor I would (with his consent, of course). His accounts and research analysis are full of compassionate insights and invitations to take greater care of ourselves and each other. To say this book is a blessing is an understatement.

What a strange, important, depressing, honest, native, time-bending, consciousness-changing trip that was! I won’t ever see a tree the same way.
