Historia
Aside from FDR, no American did more to shape World War II than Admiral William D. Leahy - not Douglas MacArthur, not Dwight Eisenhower, and not even the legendary George Marshall. No man, including Harry Hopkins, was closer to Roosevelt, nor had earned his blind faith, like Leahy. Through the course of the war, constantly at the president's side and advising him on daily decisions, Leahy became the second most powerful man in the world.

Historia
As a young man, Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) escaped from slavery in Baltimore, Maryland. He was fortunate to have been taught to read by his slave owner mistress, and he would go on to become one of the major literary figures of his time. He wrote three versions of his autobiography over the course of his lifetime and published his own newspaper. His very existence gave the lie to slave owners: with dignity and great intelligence, he bore witness to the brutality of slavery.

Insightful, educational, hard to listen to
Revisado: 02-19-25
Overall, glad to have listened to this book as I learned a lot more about Douglass, his life, more depth about incidents and the time period.
However, THE . . . BREATHLESS . . . NARRATION . . . STYLE made it a very tedious listen . . . like listening to William Shatner reading a Wikipedia page.
I don't think I've ever NEGATIVELY noticed a narrator before, but I will not be listening to any more books by Mr. Onayemi, it's nothing personal, but man it was hard to get through.

Really tried to like the book… But by the end, I was just finishing it to finish it. I’d long since lost interest in the narrative.

In Made in America, Bryson de-mythologizes his native land, explaining how a dusty hamlet with neither woods nor holly became Hollywood, how the Wild West wasn't won, why Americans say 'lootenant' and 'Toosday', how Americans were eating junk food long before the word itself was cooked up, as well as exposing the true origins of the G-string, the original $64,000 question, and Dr Kellogg of cornflakes fame.

Didn’t ruin it… But it’s not Bll Bryson
Revisado: 08-04-23
I wouldn’t go so far as of the reviewers to say that the reader ruined the book… But certain authors (David Sedaris, David McCullough, Bill Bryson, etc.) should always read their own work. There’s subtle inflections, and the personality they bring to their own readings, improve or degrade the text by 50%.

Tediously BREATHLESS Narration
Revisado: 05-25-23
I work in the field, and actually know several of the people mentioned in the book— I really wanted to like it— but I found the narrator, insufferable and her “breathless” narration of banal moments hard to take.
I also found the author’s “agenda” to be so heavy-handed, that it got in the way of the wonderful history.

Should be required reading in U.S. High Schools
Revisado: 11-19-22
I expected a good read based on Rocket Men and wasn't disappointed. If anything, it was even better. Don't personally care for the narrator, but to each his own.
I just returned from Honolulu and was at Pearl Harbor 15 days ago, and had picked up the book because I like to read about places before I visit them. I was about halfway through before the trip and finished since returning.
Very informative, clearly well-researched, but not an easy read as (especially since I was just there) there are so many raw painful first-hand accounts. At a couple places, after listening for long stretches, I had to stop for awhile because I have a very capable imagination and the descriptions were heart-rending and tragic----yet I was also glad they were there----everyone on Earth should know that war IS hell, and it's not just a video game or voyeuristic online video for those who have lived through it. (And makes me very conscious of what is happening in the Ukraine right now, we still live in a world with such insanity.)
The book, besides being very thorough, I think also does a very nice job of putting the causes and world outcomes in an understandable and thought-provoking context.
A tough read at times to get through, but a very impressive and worthy book.

In what is considered one of Heinlein's most hair-raising, thought-provoking, and outrageous adventures, the master of modern science fiction tells the strange story of an even stranger world. It is 21st-century Luna, a harsh penal colony where a revolt is plotted between a bashful computer and a ragtag collection of maverick humans, a revolt that goes beautifully until the inevitable happens. But that's the problem with the inevitable: it always happens.

How did America become “one nation, indivisible”? What unified a growing number of disparate states into the modern country we recognize today? To answer these questions, Winchester follows in the footsteps of America’s most essential explorers, thinkers, and innovators. Introducing the fascinating people who played a pivotal role in creating today’s United States, he ponders whether the historic work of uniting the States has succeeded, and to what degree.

Revisado: 09-17-21
If you’ve read any of his other books than you know what to expect. I was just about to send an email to a friend who clued me in, that all of his books or as good as The Professor and the Madman. I think I have now listened to everything by Mr. Winchester that is available on Audible. Superb research, superb writing, superb storytelling. The only thing I’m bummed by, is the fact that now I need to wait for something new to come out.
I will say this was not at all the book I expected based on the cover and the title, but it was very enjoyable nonetheless.

In Kindred, Neanderthal expert Becky Wragg Sykes shoves aside the cliché of the shivering ragged figure in an icy wasteland and reveals the Neanderthal you don’t know, who lived across vast and diverse tracts of Eurasia and survived through hundreds of thousands of years of massive climate change. Using a thematic rather than chronological approach, this book will shed new light on where they lived, what they ate and the increasingly complex Neanderthal culture that is being discovered.

Revisado: 06-25-21
Most impressive to me was the way the other had a feel for the poetry and storytelling of the "facts". It was a bit formulaic by the end, but I do respect her ability as a scientist to envision and imagine the profound moments---the LAST Neanderthal looking at the sky, etc.
A worthy use of a credit!

When 38 jetliners bound for the United States were forced to land at Gander International Airport in Canada by the closing of US airspace on September 11, the population of this small town on Newfoundland Island swelled from 10,300 to nearly 17,000. The citizens of Gander met the stranded passengers with an overwhelming display of friendship and goodwill.

Enjoyable and Emotional casual read
Revisado: 06-25-21
Listened to this book over a couple days while doing household chores, etc. If you lived through it, you can't help thinking back to your own moments after the event.
I wouldn't say it was life-changing, but I would definitely recommend it as a good use for a credit. (despite a fairly short length.)
