Historia
In this vast and gorgeous tapestry of a novel, serf and master, Cossack and tsar, priest and Jew are brought together in a family saga which unrolls through centuries of history to reveal that most impenetrable and mysterious of lands - Russia. Through the life of a little town east of Moscow in the Russian heartland, Edward Rutherfurd creates a sweeping family saga from the baffling contradictions of Russia's culture and her peoples - bleak yet exotic, brutal but romantic, land of ritual yet riddled with superstitious fears.

Rich history with great storytelling
Revisado: 05-29-24
This was my first time listening to a book by Rutherford. If you like mutli-generational historical fiction like in the vein of Michener you'll love this book. I look forward to listening to another book of his, Sarum. I would recommend this narrator too, very well done!

Historia
Would you suffer persecution, poverty, and prison for Christ? Would you endure cruel tortures that take your mind and body to the brink of death and beyond? Would you watch your children suffering for their faith and urge them to remain faithful to Christ? Two thousand years of martyrs. For nearly 2000 years, courageous men and women have been tortured and killed because of their confessions of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. The New Foxe's Book of Martyrs tells their stories.

Good, but abridged?
Revisado: 04-21-24
I very much enjoyed this audio book. It was well done, and it's message is timeless. I had read an older version of this Foxe's Book of Matyrs a few years ago. The old English was hard to wade through at times but the history was complelling! This particular version is almost an abridged copy because so much had been edited out. The new material was good, and the updated English makes it more accesible to a wider audience. If you love history you might like an older version better.

Historia
After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom.

Fascinating story
Revisado: 03-25-24
This was the first time listening to a novel by James Clavell. I loved the story and thought the author did a great job at explaining Japanese culture. The story showed how western and eastern culture have difderent worldviews. At times it was hard to follow all the characters without visually seeing their names. This was a great story, but I was a little dissapoited how Clavell wrapped up the story. I will definitely listen to another in the the series.

Historia
In this triumphant best seller, renowned novelist James A. Michener unfolds a powerful and poignant drama of disenchanted youth during the Vietnam era. Against exotic backdrops, including Spain, Morocco, and Mozambique, he weaves together the heady dreams, shocking tribulations, and heartwarming bonds of six young runaways cast adrift in the world - as well as the hedonistic pursuit of drugs and pleasure that collapses all around them.

Great time piece
Revisado: 07-31-22
I like Michener, and this work had some great moments. From the standpoint of Michener writing about this time in history I believe he did a great job articulating some of the tension that young people faced during the 60's and 70's.

A story of the human experience and human natue
Revisado: 02-19-22
I like Michener. This story was not as long as his other behemoths, but I got lost in it like all his other books. I found the last chapter very interesting which gave some of the back story to this novel, so much so that now I want to listen to Alaska.

Historia
In the early 18th century, the Pirate Republic was home to some of the great pirate captains, including Blackbeard, "Black Sam" Bellamy, and Charles Vane. Along with their fellow pirates - former sailors, indentured servants, and runaway slaves - this "Flying Gang" established a crude but distinctive democracy in the Bahamas, carving out their own zone of freedom in which servants were free, Blacks could be equal citizens, and leaders were chosen or deposed by a vote.

Historia
Written to commemorate the Bicentennial in 1976, James A. Michener's magnificent saga of the West is an enthralling celebration of the frontier. Brimming with the glory of America's past, the story of Colorado - the Centennial State - is manifested through its people: Lame Beaver, the Arapaho chieftain and warrior, and his Comanche and Pawnee enemies; Levi Zendt, fleeing with his child bride from the Amish country; and the cowboy, Jim Lloyd, who falls in love with a wealthy and cultured Englishwoman, Charlotte Seccombe.

Revisado: 05-19-18
I love James Michener novels. This is one of my favorites. Issues that haunted our nation's past are just as relevant today, that's what makes this novel so powerful.
