Historia
Johannes Cabal and his rather inexact powers of necromancy are back once more. This time, his talents are purchased by the Fear Institute as they hunt for the phobic animus - the embodiment of fear. The three institute members, led by Cabal and his silver key, enter the Dreamlands and find themselves pursued by walking trees plagued with giant ticks, stone men that patrol the ruins of their castles, cats that feed on human flesh, and phobias that torment and devastate.

A true Joy
Revisado: 10-23-21
I can't imagine any fan of fantasy or horror that would not enjoy this work of speculative fiction. it has surprising dry humor, as well as, uncomfortable logic of dark deeds of a necromancer.
Nicholas Guy Smith delivered a very good, but not flawless performance. A bit more effort at accent would be appreciated; but his interpretation of Jonathan L Howard is immersive and nearly transcendent at various points of the story as it unfolds.

not YA Fiction
Revisado: 10-01-21
it's a fantastic fantasy taking place in a modern world. some very adult themes about business, religion, and the dangers of secrets, secret societies and the turmoil not short violent lives in a never ending war.
there is social commentary here, but the author, Kagawa, is subtle anD nuanced with the unwinding of the rich and powerful who treat all beneath them as subhuman and undeserving of respect.
The voice actors do a fine Job of emersion and assist with the suspension of disbelief at every turn. moving the plot with emotion, while not being melodramatic or emo.
there's enough language, violence, and adult themes that make this anything but. a children's book.

Something For Everyone
Revisado: 09-24-21
This is More
More than just a story about a dog and his human.
More than a Cop Mystery
More than a Procedural Crime Novel
there's particularly something here for anyone working through trauma.
It must be said that there's something special about how Cops are portrayed. Having known a few, this goes a long way towards understanding the world in which Police Officers navigate. while these novels don't deal with racism within Police ranks, (at least through book 3 in the series,) it does show the fear, struggles even the hate that creeps into the life of Cops on the job.
while i would not recommend young children to read or listen to this. There's not a lot in the way of warnings; just a moderate amount of cursing, some discussion of some adult themes and dangerous situations, with sexual abuse mentioned without any graphic details.
i would have read this book in 7-8th grade with no problem. it might have brought back some trauma from my own abuse: but in equal measure, i believe that it's helpful in sorting out the anxiety, depression and fear associated with such PTSD issues.
Looking back, I wish that I had this book (series)to read when I was struggling in my pre-teen and teenage years. kids love animals for the most part. I was very attached to dogs, cats, horses even livestock after several childhood traumas. Between losing my father at almost 6 years old, and assault by a friend of the family at age 11-12, these books would have helped me cope with my life troubles.
This book helped me. In the current Time; at age 50.
yeah, it's a story about a dog, a cop, a vet, some horses, and life in a small, mountain town bordering the wilderness: But that is just a canvas on which Margaret Mizushima paints the stories about what it's like to survive trauma and navigate intense and entangled human relationship.
Nancy Wu's talent as a Voice actor is not to be oversold here, either. Her voice can be as smooth as butter on silk and as anxiety inducing as a freaked out tweaker. Her range in vocalization as well as empathic story telling is stellar. She is not just reading a book, she is putting on a Radio Play, with only her own vocal chords as the cast, crew and stage.
could this be improved with a production treatment like The Sandman? Yes. but only slightly. it would require a bit of rewrite on narrative as a separate character, and sound effects would provide more immersion. i think a musical score would detract, actually. The voice actor Nancy Wu, would have to be a top consideration for at least two or three of these roles.
But that is another thing from an audiobook.
She does bring all the characters to life, but her voice characterization for some of the baritone and bass voices of big men is not totally convincing. Having said that, she reminds me of a few amazing story tellers that I knew growing up in Tennessee: she delivers a close enough rendering of each characters voice and mannerisms for you to form a moving picture of that person in your mind.
And since this is a book, and not a Screenplay, you cannot expect her to pull Off a multi-person stage production by herself. But she almost pulls off the next-level full Radio Play Produci, by herself. and that is why her performance gets 5 Stars. She not only doesn't limit the material with her talent; she makes it a bit more than the sum of all it's parts. The author and any reader of her books cannot have any complaints about her presentation and professionalism. I feel smarter, having heard her.
superb overall: technical accuracy of both cop and vet procedure, without talking down to the reader. A well crafted story; and performance that is special, unique, and spot on to the spirit of the source material.
lovely.

An Exemplar of The Prequel
Revisado: 09-22-21
You can listen to this story before or after the other about Kyoshi. Nancy Wu delivers an intoxicating performance. Her voice talent is second to none. it's easy to be lulled off to sleep when she is calmly rolling the narrative, but you can be on edge when the battle and other anxious scenes play out. her vivid voice interpretation for each character is so spot on; Anyone remotely paying attention will know intuitively who is speaking at any moment.
The only way this could be better is if it was given the full Radio Play treatment ala The Sandman: with different people for each character and audio special effects.
For that, it would need a slight rewrite to bring a more separate narrative voice, as a distinct character.
i will listen to this book again. marked as a favorite.

Historia
If you think the only thing Ellison writes is speculative fiction, craziness about giant cockroaches that attack Detroit, or invaders from space who look like pink eggplant and smell like chicken soup, this dynamite novel of the emergent days of rock and roll will turn you around at least three times. No spaceships, no robots, just a nice kid from Louisville named Stag Preston with a voice like an angel, seductive moves like the devil, and an invisible monkey named Success riding him straight to hell.

Revisado: 09-16-21
Stefan Rudnicki brings to life a story full of raw edges and conflict; smoothly and with gravitas.
Tug at your heart strings while simultaneously being filled with disgust over the human condition. within us are contained the seeds of our own destruction.
Harlan Ellison speaks in introduction to a work of Truth about humanity, in a story that never happened, but that is based on a true story. The story of human beings clawing for their moment in the sun is a quest for an end to personal suffering.

Adult themes In Young Adult Futurist Fiction
Revisado: 09-07-21
bonehead people that are calling this "Juvenile," are smoking crack or something that impaired their judgement. Live, rivalry, betrayal, bullying, and childhood)teen trauma at the hands of your own family is not an adolescent set of fears only.
this is real Adult SH!+
PTSD is not only a kids disease.
this is a wonderful tale of caring and sacrifice wrapped up in a post apocalyptical sword and sorcerer fantasy horror. it's a dramedy. there's gallows humor throughout.
Susan E. Smith is a Gordram genius.
This should be required reading/listening for every college age student and above.
I rate this PG-13. People 19-99 need to hear this:
no heavy duty cursing. just the occasional damn, and he'll.
I wish I could give this 5/5.
but
it needs some females voicing the parts if the women and girls.
a full cast would bring this alive like the Sandman.
Seriously, it's that good: It would stand up to that treatment. i would love to see this as a live action or animated series.
absolutely.
and it's f354129 FREE!
what do you want
marshmallows in your hott cocoa?
it's the end of the world: some sacrifices are necessary.

swashbuckling, heart-melting Adventure
Revisado: 09-02-21
this isn't just a Cowboy Space Opera. There's plenty of Horses, cattle, ropes, Six-Guns, and Lever Actions. but there is so much story: from coming of age, to your family, first love, mad musings, the tragedies of war, sickness, and death. So life affirming,, funny, sarcastic and Even Maudlin. if you have emotion it will touch you, with human kindness.and.love of every stripe.
and it's not heavy with foul language. Though some of the story lines may be distasteful and offensive to some traumatized folks, small children and those with PTSD and Bipolar Disorder. it is worth the Horror of the human condition for the hope, mercy, and charity.
but, there is graphic discussions of violence, war, and abuse. so i would put it at PG-13 anyway.
