Memorize the names and loyalties
Revisado: 03-12-25
This fast pace story about spy versus spy versus spy is hard to put down. You have to pay attention to the names and which side they work for because they switch sometimes. Fast-paced with a little romance, I highly recommend it.

Historia
In this vivid memoir, Neidhardt explores her childhood in wider familial and social contexts. Drawing upon a trove of family letters and other archival material, she follows her parents’ journey from privilege to food stamps—from their formative youths, to their embrace of pioneer homemaking and rural poverty, to their sudden and wrenching return to conventional society—and explores the back-to-the-land movement of the 1970s as it was, and as she lived it.

Thoroughly and grossing book
Revisado: 02-14-25
This is a superb story about a young family of upper middle class background who joined the counterculture movement in the 1970s and homesteaded in Fox Arkansas building a Homestead from the ground up as told through the memories of the young child who lived it, and correspondence among relatives who stayed in more comfortable circumstances. It is also an insightfulsociological description of the times in context of this family. I had a hard time putting it down.

Historia
The series of detective stories Anna Katherine Green wrote were among the earliest in the 20th century, and depict modern America and the workings of the police departments. These unfold and are full of the details of a new 20th century world. Initials Only is set in New York, and purveys a certain atmosphere unique to that period. It revolves around the workings of the retired Detective Gryce and his young assistant, Mr Sweetwater. A seemingly unsolvable mystery, the death by apparent suicide of an heiress, is investigated by the two detectives and the New York Coroner.

This was not my favorite and Catherine Green. It seemed to ramble. But she always ramble to some extent. Having said that the narrator was very difficult to understand and mispronounce some words consistently.

Historia
Newly married Mrs. Jeffrey is found in the library of the old family mansion dead with a pistol tied to her wrist, and everyone is suspect. The library in the family mansion has a reputation for harboring dead men, and no one knows how or why this is so. First published in 1903, Green delivers a well-written mystery again. Who is innocent and who is not?

Anna Catherine Green, a famous author in the 19th century, is very much underrated as a mystery writer and describer of her own times. I always enjoy her old-fashioned plots and scenes, and there is always some quirky peak into the future of gimmicks that solved the mystery.

Mixing, science, and brilliant storytelling, this author goes through the history of color, what colors are physically made of, historical techniques used,, and The chemicals used to create them. I recommend this to anyone who is a painter, a fabric artist, historian, or just plain curious.

Historia
From its debut in 1962, Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? was a wild success and a cultural lightning rod. The play transpires over one long, boozy night, laying bare the lies, compromises, and scalding love that have sustained a middle-aged couple through decades of marriage. It scandalized critics but magnetized audiences. Across 644 sold-out Broadway performances, the drama demolished the wall between what could and couldn’t be said on the American stage and marked a definitive end to the I Love Lucy 1950s.

If you liked the play you’ll love the movie
Revisado: 05-16-24
As a fan of the play, “Whose Afraid of Virginia Wolfe”, as well as the film, this blow by blow scholarly description of the inception of the iconic play about mid-century marriage is fascinating through to the very end. Who could resist the inside tails of the lives of Rich and famous film, stars, subsequently famous theater, and film directors, and one of the most iconic playwrights of our day. The only complaint I have was that the point of view was taken from the point of view of marriage in the 20th and 21st centuries, and it got a little long. But, I suspect the author needed something on which to hang a premise.

Well, sometimes I do find his humor a little over-the-top. But he is a very charming man, and this was a lovely romp through his life from beginning to now. The stories of his celebrity friends, who are really just ordinary people who happen to be celebrities were fun to listen to —some of my favorite celebrities! It was a good listen.

Before long, they’d pulled themselves back from the brink of extinction. The human brain, and its evolutionary journey, is unlike anything else in history. In A History of the Human Brain, Bret Stetka takes listeners through that far-reaching journey. He also tackles the question of where the brain will take us next, exploring the burgeoning concepts of epigenetics and new technologies like CRISPR.

Revisado: 09-17-23
This is a riveting book, in spite of the glacial content – watching trees grow. I loved every minute of it, and will never look at a forest or the trees on my own property again. I recommend it to anyone who loves nature, or needs to learn to love nature.
