This is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

It sure is a lot of book for the money
Revisado: 04-13-17
I made it about twenty chapters into this beast and I have to admit defeat. It's not a bad book, and I tried to like it, but I don't. I think I may hate it, actually.
This is the first epic fantasy I've really tried, so maybe it just isn't the genre for me. I found myself growing increasingly frustrated by the framing device (that I didn't realize was a framing device until seven chapters in, when the narrative abruptly switched to what I assume is the "real" story), the overly precious way the characters talk (there are plenty of good turns of phrase, but it makes the speakers sound like they're trying hard to be clever), the main character being the Cleverest Boy, and with just how long it takes to get anywhere. At some point around chapter fifteen I begged Rothfuss aloud to please just get on with it. He was deaf to my plea.
I will say that what little I got to see of the magic system was very creative and interesting. Like I said, it's not poorly written.
In any case, I can listen to three good books in the time it will take to finish slogging through this, so I'm tapping out.

Historia
Governments today in both Europe and the United States have succeeded in casting government spending as reckless wastefulness that has made the economy worse. In contrast, they have advanced a policy of draconian budget cuts - austerity - to solve the financial crisis. We are told that we have all lived beyond our means and now need to tighten our belts. This view conveniently forgets where all that debt came from. Not from an orgy of government spending, but as the direct result of bailing out, recapitalizing, and adding liquidity to the broken banking system.

A good overview
Revisado: 03-07-17
This can get a little hard to follow if you're not up on the last few decades of EU monetary kerfuffles, but the book isn't setting out to be an intro to international monetary policy. I thought his arguments were well laid out and supported with real world case studies, though I'm predisposed to agree with his conclusions. The writing style is accessible and not too dry, and the narrator is pleasant.

Historia
Since prehistory, humans have braved the business ends of knives, scrapers, and mashers, all in the name of creating something delicious - or at least edible. In Consider the Fork, award-winning food writer and historian Bee Wilson traces the ancient lineage of our modern culinary tools, revealing the startling history of objects we often take for granted. Charting the evolution of technologies from the knife and fork to the gas range and the sous-vide cooker, Wilson offers unprecedented insights.

Great even for non-cooks
Revisado: 02-21-17
I detest cooking and I'd never given much thought to the history behind cooking implements, but this was a fascinating listen. It's well-researched and accessible, and you can tell Wilson had fun gathering material and constructing a narrative around the history. I'll probably listen to it more than once to pick up on details that slipped by the first time.

From "a major new talent" (George R. R. Martin) comes an epic speculative novel of revolution, adventure, and the struggle for free will set in a world that might have been, of mechanical men and alchemical dreams. My name is Jax. That is the name granted to me by my human masters. I am a slave. But I shall be free.

Revisado: 02-21-17
After being more or less ambivalent about the subgenre for years, this book has brought me around. I'm a sucker for stories with robot protagonists, so I gave this a shot and was not disappointed. Tregillis has made a whole alternate history for Europe and North America rather than just stick some superficial cogs and waistcoats on and call it a day. The world building never bogs down the plot, which is one of the more exciting thrillers I've read recently.

A cool surprise
Revisado: 02-21-17
I bought this one on sale, having no idea what it was about. I'm not a literary fiction person but this has enough Twilight Zone flavor to keep me interested in the lit fic "dysfunctional family confronts its issues" thing, which I usually find too navel gazing and tedious to handle for a whole book. There's some really enjoyable imagery folded into the creepy happenings, too. Good stuff, makes me want to explore the genre more.

Classic
Revisado: 02-21-17
Earthsea is timeless, right up there with Middle Earth. Slower-paced and more sedate than a lot of modern fantasy, but has a mythic feel. Just put your earbuds in and let it take you away from whatever dull task you're doing. Le Guin is a must for fantasy fans, especially those who also love legends and folktales.

Historia
What happens when the haggling is done and the shops are closed? When the quest has been given, the steeds saddled, and the adventurers are off to their next encounter? They keep the world running, the food cooked, and the horses shoed, yet what adventurer has ever spared a thought or concern for the Non-Player Characters? In the town of Maplebark, four such NPCs settle in for a night of actively ignoring the adventurers drinking in the tavern when things go quickly and fatally awry.

Neat little book
Revisado: 02-21-17
Picked this up during a sale and it was a pleasant listen. I'm not into D&D but the characters were enjoyable even if a lot of the roleplaying nods were probably lost on me. The story itself is very stock fantasy but has an interesting sort of high-concept wrinkle with the game's actual players. Nothing blew me away but it's fun and pulpy.

My name is Marten Mann. I work for the devil, or the prince of lies, as you people are so fond of calling him. Yes. You read that last line correctly. I am employed by the powers of evil as acquisitor ad infinitum. I did not seek out this job: I was chosen for the position. To put it in simpler terms, I am a broker of sorts - you know, the guy who finds out what it is that you want the most. I make it readily available to you for a price. I think we all know just how costly that one thing that you think you need so much can be.

Plot?
Revisado: 02-21-17
Where is the plot? The author hinted that something was going to actually happen back in chapter two, and I got as far as chapter eight with little more than back story, gore whose significance on the still-elusive plot is lost on me, and tangents. Tedious. I like the concept but I don't trust the author to deliver and I'm not willing to waste more time on this one. Good narrator, though.

Historia
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Awesome
Revisado: 02-21-17
Bought this on a whim during a sale and recently got around to listening. Pretty grimdark, but nothing feels gratuitous. G.R.R. Martin fans will probably enjoy this. The author has built a really arresting world and society that I absolutely would not want to live in, but it's fascinating to watch the unfolding disaster, and you really root for the characters to pull through somehow. The narrator has great flow, too. Definitely going to pick up the next book.

Historia
We live in the age of the algorithm. Increasingly, the decisions that affect our lives—where we go to school, whether we can get a job or a loan, how much we pay for health insurance—are being made not by humans, but by machines. In theory, this should lead to greater fairness: Everyone is judged according to the same rules.

Good content, lacking narration.
Revisado: 01-26-17
An interesting cautionary look at analytics, but it would have benefitted from a proper narrator. The author is pleasant, but she reads a bit too fast and with too much mouth noise, and her diction can be difficult to understand at times.
