Absolutely engrossing and great fun
Revisado: 02-28-24
While I'm not (quite) old enough to have lived through the golden age of radio, I thoroughly enjoyed just about all of the short programs. The voices are outstanding, creating a nostalgia that, in theory, i shouldn't have felt. The stories range from slightly predictable to nicely surprising. The closest analogy I felt was to vintage sici-fi like The Twilight Zone.

Historia
The world outside has grown toxic, the view of it limited, talk of it forbidden. The remnants of humanity live underground in a single silo. But there are always those who hope, who dream. These are the dangerous people, the residents who infect others with their optimism. Their punishment is simple. They are given the very thing they want: They are allowed to go outside.

A strong story with excellent narration. One word of caution: the Silo TV series Season 1 ends about halfway through this book. Spoilers be damned I still listened to all of it!

An entertaining autobiography that rings true
Revisado: 10-05-23
I’ve known Jean-Louis for 28 years and worked for him at Be. He’s every bit as modest and candid as this autobiography portrays. The only missing component is how outrageously hilarious he often was, albeit not always 100% PC. His predictions about Apple VR/AR have turned out to be correct. The narration was very good indeed but I, at least, would have loved to hear it in Jean-Louis’ voice.

"I’m James Taylor and I’m a professional autobiographer", says the celebrated folk singer at the start of this tender audio memoir. Through decades of music by one of the best-selling musicians of all time, who created classics like "Fire and Rain" and "Carolina in My Mind", James Taylor has doled out his history in the poetry of his work. Taylor says his early life is, "the source of many of my songs", and Break Shot is a tour of his first 21 years in rich, new detail.

Revisado: 07-26-22
Isaacson never ever disappoints. Having lived through much of the computer age and been in the thick of Silicon Valley, I can attest to the accuracy of the portrayal of quite a few of the events in the book. And, as always, great storytelling and narration.

Historia
Robert A. Heinlein wrote The Number of the Beast, which was published in 1980. In the book Zeb, Deety, Hilda, and Jake are ambushed by the alien "Black Hats" and barely escape with their lives on a specially configured vehicle (the Gay Deceiver) which can travel along various planes of existence, allowing them to visit parallel universes. However, unknown to most fans, Heinlein had already written a "parallel" novel about the four characters and parallel universes in 1977.

Listening only because of loyalty to writer
Revisado: 02-27-22
I've enjoyed many Heinlein books, with Time Enough For Love a childhood fond memory. This book, however, is like playing Heinlein bingo: everyone is off-the-scale smart? Check. Everyone is insanely wealthy? Check. People get married hours after their first meeting? Check. Everyone gets naked in a bath together? Check. Everyone is a master wielder of weapons? Check. The book appears to be a rehash of most if not all Heinlein memes and themes.
I can get past all this, because the writing is engaging. But, but, but.... a thoat rhymes with vote. It's not "foe at". What on Earth (or Mars or Barsoom) was the director thinking? None of the thoat puns make sense with this "foe at" pronunciation.
The multiple narrators are good and an interesting twist, but make it harder than usual to follow who's talking. I'm halfway through, grinding my teeth with every "foe at" reference, but persevering because I like the writing. And there are likely more Heinlein bingo elements ahead....

Historia
Whether pondering black holes or predicting discoveries at CERN, physicists believe the best theories are beautiful, natural, and elegant, and this standard separates popular theories from disposable ones. This is why, Sabine Hossenfelder argues, we have not seen a major breakthrough in the foundations of physics for more than four decades. The belief in beauty has become so dogmatic that it now conflicts with scientific objectivity: Observation has been unable to confirm mindboggling theories, like supersymmetry or grand unification, invented by physicists based on aesthetic criteria.

Revisado: 10-04-21
A very well-reasoned observation and critique of the state of physics. Also disturbing because it spears that field is stuck between the grant/research system and frustration with current theories.

Historia
Low-level entertainment lawyer Nick Carter thinks it's a prank, not an alien encounter, when a redheaded mullah and a curvaceous nun show up at his office. But Frampton and Carly are highly advanced (if bumbling) extraterrestrials. And boy, do they have news. The entire cosmos, they tell him, has been hopelessly hooked on humanity's music ever since "Year Zero" (1977 to us), when American pop songs first reached alien ears. This addiction has driven a vast intergalactic society to commit the biggest copyright violation since the Big Bang.

I wanted to like it, and I did, a little...
Revisado: 09-26-21
Science fiction comedy is really hard. HHGTTG is perhaps the definitive success in the genre, largely because it's the only success I can think of. Red Dwarf somehow pulled it off on TV, so maybe the British have figured out how to make SF comedy work.
I really wanted to like Year Zero, and it does have its moments. John Hodgman's narration is good and elevates much of the material; I haven't listened to one of his books before but his narration means that I will.
The combination of hard science fiction and silly planet names doesn't work for me. The referential comedy harks back to HHGTTG but also doesn't work for me. For example the reference to a planet's atmosphere being roughly the same as Drakkar Noir seems forced.
However, was this a waste of 10 hours? No. There are clever ideas throughout the book and those are always worth hearing. Even HHGTTG has its annoying elements and so I'd personally put Year Zero as a close runner-up in the SF comedy genre.
