Historia
Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

Couldn’t stop listening …
Revisado: 06-05-24
I have seldom associated Kristin Hannah with historical fiction, so I’ve been blown away by her more recent works. Her characters and grasp on what was happening during difficult times in history come together to create compelling stories that weave joy and heartbreak in a most beautiful way. I listened to The Four Winds and The Women for hours a day on neighborhood walks, road trips and in the empty spaces of life only to arrive at an end where I wanted to keep going. I am eager to backtrack to older novels to see what I’ve missed!

Historia
According to Confucius, “an educated woman is a worthless woman,” but Tan Yunxian—born into an elite family, yet haunted by death, separations, and loneliness—is being raised by her grandparents to be of use. Her grandmother is one of only a handful of female doctors in China, and she teaches Yunxian the pillars of Chinese medicine, the Four Examinations—looking, listening, touching, and asking—something a man can never do with a female patient.

Revisado: 03-28-24
This book is so well-written, researched and narrated. She brings the stories to life of women whose roles were strictly defined by culture and traditions in such a beautifully moving way. I look forward to more Lisa See books.

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Beautiful!
Revisado: 03-22-24
I let the length of this book delay my listening, but what a beautiful, sweeping novel it is! Verghese drew me in from the first page and held me through to the very end sharing the joys and heartbreak of this family as if retelling his own history. I highly recommend this deep dive into the Indian culture and the common threads of experience that bind us together as humans. I was spellbound and will likely add the book to my permanent library at home.

Always a nice read…
Revisado: 01-09-24
Carlene O’Connor provides a pleasant story in all her books that engages without being overly complicated . A true mystery that usually keeps me guessing until the end with a clean story line. I also enjoy her developing cast of characters as they grow in each successive book. Narration is perfect!

Historia
In the early hours of a summer morning, a young woman steps into the path of an oncoming bus. A tragic accident? Or suicide? At the center of this puzzle is Adrian Wolfe, a successful architect and grief-stricken widower, who, a year after his third wife's death, begins to investigate the cause. As Adrian looks back on their brief but seemingly happy marriage, disturbing secrets begin to surface. The divorces from his two previous wives had been amicable, or so it seemed; his children, all five of them, were resilient as ever, or so he thought.

Not a fan…
Revisado: 06-20-22
I was hoping for more in my first reading of a Colleen Hoover book based on reviews. The storyline had promise, but I can do with less repetitious, explicit recitation of sexual exploits. I won’t listen to another of her books. I wish there was a notation in the book info regarding this type of content so I could pass on by and not waste my money.
