Historia
The Way of Silence draws heavily on Buddhist teachings to cultivate the practice of "deep" listening: turning away from noise and distraction, paying attention, and embracing quiet. The Way of Silence embraces paradox: absence versus presence in silence. Dynamic tranquility. The all-oneness of aloneness. Humbly, trusting in God, you'll practice emptying your mind in order to receive wisdom, insight, and understanding.

Like a dance
Revisado: 05-02-25
Brother David is fantastic when describing the sublime. His lead in to mindfulness has none of the stale self help sound of being beat with the word until it is meaning-less. Actually , the opposite, he brings in poetry and music to translate becoming fully alive. His childhood background was particularly meaningful to me. I first sold his books in my bookshop in the 1990s shortly after his work with Parliament of World religions and his House of Prayer movement. The reader ( Douglas James) is the perfect voice for this work.

We often think of saints as rare individuals whose gifts far exceed our own, and St. Francis is no exception. But for Fr. Richard Rohr, a prolific author and renowned speaker, the life and teachings of this beloved figure offer an authentic spirituality we can all embody.

An extraordinary opportunity
Revisado: 03-20-24
Richard Rohr is at the height of his capabilities here. As a Franciscan he gives inside knowledge of how Francis achieved this most precious art. I have been a Franciscan for more than 40 years and this series of talks is beyond outstanding. With the right openness and willingness one could go quite far. Not the "bird bath" Franciscan story , but how did he do it and how can we. I cannot agree more. This work is not available in written form anywhere.

Zen Buddhism emphasizes meditation as the means to study ourselves and understand who we truly are. Dharma talks are an essential aspect of Zen training, and the talks offered here were given at both the Zen Mountain Monastery and the Zen Center of New York City.

Zen Dharma Talk
Revisado: 04-24-21
This particular talk for the Student of Zen, is truly on the mark. A Dharma talk isn’t a Dharma “read”
John is perhaps one of the only true Zen teachers America has produced. I knew the simultaneous translator for a Roshi and we discussed how weak American Zen was at the time ( 1979) and he explained that it had not even been in America 100 years yet. It took hundreds of years to settle down in China and Japan. John shows the true Dharma eye.

Best Centering Prayer Information available
Revisado: 09-17-12
This book has filled so much open space in my knowledge of Centering Prayer. Having met Father Keating in 1987 and having read his fascinating informative and inspiring books as well as practiced Centering Prayer ever since. This new look at the topic is like fresh air in its different approach! It is written so lovingly and with such depth of understanding and background on this source of Contemplative prayer in the Christian tradition, I feel nourished by all the hitherto unknown information. The exact method is discribed for beginners and those familiar to this ancient prayer form.
I have recommended this reading [ and now the hard copy book ] to my entire group of friends both Christian and non Christian.
There are really no words for the spiritual value of Basil Pennington's work.
Thank you for this opportunity

Historia
"Everyone dies, but no one is dead," goes the Tibetan saying. It is with these words that Advice on Dying takes flight. Using a 17th-century poem written by a prominent scholar-practitioner, His Holiness the Dalai Lama draws from a wide range of traditions and beliefs to explore the stages we all go through when we die, which are the very same stages we experience in life when we go to sleep, faint, or reach orgasm (Shakespeare's "little death").

Doesn't this title indicate something?
Revisado: 06-25-12
This book is a guide to something that is totally vacant in this culture . As an American, I can say that it is an extremely fortunate occurance that His Holiness has opened these teachings. As there is no guide whatsoever in the West for after death states , this is probably the most important material one could ever hear.I also suggest getting the book and reading it too. Also the following book [ which is on Audible] by His Holiness "How to practice" gives one the steps to actuate this in their lives now.

Historia
Robert Thurman illuminates the Tibetan Book of the Dead with up-to-date insights for modern audiences. For centuries, this text has been read aloud to the dying, who Buddhist masters say are capable of hearing up to three days after clinical death, as a guide through the tumultuous and often terrifying process of dissolution. Now, in Liberation Upon Hearing in the Between, Professor Robert Thurman demystifies this esoteric teaching and reveals the Tibetan view of dying.

At Long last
Revisado: 03-31-12
Would you listen to Liberation Upon Hearing in the Between again? Why?
Not only would I listen to this again, I listen to it daily!
What other book might you compare Liberation Upon Hearing in the Between to and why?
This generic question needs to read the question and look at this book. The title should give you a clue. But I will say that even Sogyal Rinpoche's Tibetan book of Living and Dying is the only book in the ball park for any sort of comparison. This translation and most especially Bob Thurman's delivery is quintessentially American . Yes , Bob is a real American Buddhist teacher amongst a growing handful.
Have you listened to any of Robert Thurman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have listened to Bob Thurman before. First at the San Francisco Zen Center. He is a delight. Totally insightful and yet not too
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
My extreme reaction to this is : This is by far the best most easily accessed translation of the teaching to date.
Any additional comments?
After practicing Tibetan Buddhism beginning in Scotland in 1970 to this date, I have found Bob's manner and insight into the teachings perfectly suited to this moment in human history. Thank you my friend for persevering...

Historia
Tibetan Buddhism describes three gates that everyone must pass through on the road to spiritual liberation. With the Three Commitments, Pema Chodron brings her unique blend of insight and gentle instruction to guide practitioners through each of these thresholds as they seek the source of true happiness. As Pema explains, suffering arises when we resist the laws of impermenance-the fact that everything we know, including ourselves, will one day die.

Most recommended Retreat
Revisado: 01-02-12
What did you love best about The Three Commitments?
As a Buddhist practitioner for the past 42 years, I can only say how wonderful it must be for new Sangha members to be able to hear these teachings presented in such a natural easy to understand way. As with almost any Truth the actual practice could take a life time and depending on how much resistance, might also be quite painful.Of all her recorded retreats my recommendation would be this one. Yet , I may like it most because it is the newest. Thank you old friend,
Scott [ from Colorado]
