Historia
From the celebrated neurobiologist and primatologist, a landmark, genre-defining examination of human behavior, both good and bad, and an answer to the question: Why do we do the things we do? Sapolsky's storytelling concept is delightful but it also has a powerful intrinsic logic: He starts by looking at the factors that bear on a person's reaction in the precise moment a behavior occurs, and then hops back in time from there, in stages, ultimately ending up at the deep history of our species and its evolutionary legacy.

Tour de force from Sapolsky on why we do what we do. Extremely comprehensive and insightful without being overbearing. The neuroscientist in me was nerding out at some parts.

Historia
Patricia Campbell's life has never felt smaller. Her ambitious husband is too busy to give her a goodbye kiss in the morning, her kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she's always a step behind on thank-you notes and her endless list of chores. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime and paperback fiction. At these meetings they're as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are marriage, motherhood, and neighborhood gossip.

Entertaining, but not really about vampires.
Revisado: 02-24-25
This book isn’t really a guide to slaying vampires. It’s more about upper middle class southern women, their role in their private and public spheres, and the navigation of those while assessing a threat. This might have hit home a little harder if it was written by a woman. There were several times when the women were reduced to the most basic stereotypes, and it was a bit disappointing. Overall, entertaining read. I liked the narrator.

Historia
Swan is a tattoo artist new to a community in the California desert when a mourning desert dweller named Kurt requests a tribute tattoo to his dead wife. Swan agrees, but the locals warn her: don’t indulge Kurt in his tragic memories. No wonder. As Kurt returns for more tattoos, the truth about his wife’s death begins to emerge in the ink. And it isn’t pretty.

Maybe too quick?
Revisado: 02-24-25
Not bad. Definitely creepy at times. I think this story could have been better if it was longer. I wanted to know more about the protagonist. And longer scenes with more details about the run-ins with the creepy townsfolk would have been fun. I liked the narrator's intensity.

Kasia Urbaniak teaches power to women - and her answers to these questions may surprise you. Based on insights from her experiences as a dominatrix, her training to become a Taoist nun, and the countless women she has taught to expand their influence, this book offers precise, practical instruction in how to stand in your power, find your voice, and use it well.

Wow. Couldn't Love It More
Revisado: 01-24-25
This book was just what I needed. All of the things Urbaniak talks about in this book resonated with me so much. The topics touched on and skills taught really cut to the heart of a lot of discontent I personally feel. I could not recommend this book enough. I would LOVE to meet Kasia Urbaniak one day. She seems quite the force.

Historia
One of the finest German medieval epic poems, The Lay of the Nibelungs is perhaps best known now as one of the principal sources for Wagner’s four-part music drama The Ring of the Nibelung. It is easy to see how Wagner was enthralled by the story and the poetry for the power of the tale drives the narrative: intense love, loyalty, jealousy, murder, duty, honour and massacre are all interwoven into a classic.

Exciting story filled with love, violence, betrayal, and dragons. What more could you want?! I enjoyed learning about these classic characters' origins and definitely see how this inspired many works after it. It's also another good demonstration of how an eye for an eye leaves everyone blind.

Historia
Intense, brilliant and moving, The Door is a compelling story about the relationship between two women of opposing backgrounds and personalities: one, an intellectual and writer; the other, her housekeeper, a mysterious, elderly woman who sets her own rules and abjures religion, education, pretense and any kind of authority. Beneath this hardened exterior of Emerence lies a painful story that must be concealed.

4 stars. Beautiful and heartbreaking. Emerence gave all and didn’t all for much, but the narrator still couldn’t fully understand her until it was too late. Well told story with interesting characters.

We should have known the end was near. So begins Imbolo Mbue’s powerful second novel, How Beautiful We Were. Set in the fictional African village of Kosawa, it tells of a people living in fear amid environmental degradation wrought by an American oil company. Pipeline spills have rendered farmlands infertile. Children are dying from drinking toxic water. Promises of cleanup and financial reparations to the villagers are made - and ignored. The country’s government, led by a brazen dictator, exists to serve its own interests.

4.5 stars. Might have been 5 if it didn't constantly rip my heart out. Mbue did a good job of alternating narrators and informing timeline through them. That's not always pulled off well. I would definitely recommend this book.

Historia
A disturbing tale of a young man's uncanny ability to remain both young and beautiful while descending into a life of heartless debauchery, The Picture of Dorian Gray was considered proof of both Wilde's genius and his perversion. Oscar Wilde's scandalous best seller of 1891 was one of the most damning pieces of evidence used against him in the trial that brought about his downfall.

The Story Captivated Me
Revisado: 11-20-24
I knew the premise of the story before I began reading this book, but I thoroughly enjoyed the tale. I found Dorian to be a very interesting protagonist, and was fascinated imaging a person who was so unbound by morality that they would destroy most they came into close contact with. This is a book I would read again, and anticipate I'd find more to uncover the second time around.
