A delicious, highly addictive Gothic page-turner, wonderfully narrated!
Revisado: 08-25-24
What an amazing and delightful book by B. R. Myers, wonderfully performed by Olivia Vinall! Within minutes of its opening, I fell under the spell of the story, with its engaging protagonist, deliciously Gothic settings, romantic intrigue, and twisty plot. I didn’t want to put it down! but also didn’t want it to end: a tough combination. This author and narrator are perfect together, and have produced one of the most enjoyable audiobooks I’ve listened to this year. Brava to both of them! I highly recommend this audiobook, and can’t wait to read more from this wonderful author.

Another brilliant series and collaboration by Lynn Messina and Jill Smith
Revisado: 06-29-24
Having loved and followed the Beatrice Hyde-Claire series over the years, I was concerned about how Ms. Messina could match her earlier intelligent, witty, and engaging novels. But in this new series, she has created compelling new characters and sparkling dialogue - wonderfully rendered by Ms. Smith - and has drawn me deeply into their relationships. I actually had goosebumps upon hearing the closing line of this second Verity Lark novel - and I think that’s the first time that’s ever happened to me. I can’t wait to embark upon her third novel. Many thanks, Ms. Messina and Ms. Smith!! You’ve done it again!

Historia
Feisty, passionate Beatrice Steele has never fit the definition of a true lady, according to the strict code of conduct that reigns in Swampshire, her small English township—she is terrible at needlework, has absolutely no musical ability, and her artwork is so bad it frightens people. Nevertheless, she lives a perfectly agreeable life with her marriage-scheming mother, prankster father, and two younger sisters— beautiful Louisa and forgettable Mary. But she harbors a dark secret: She is obsessed with the true crime cases she reads about in the newspaper.

A witty, brilliant, delicious adventure!
Revisado: 05-10-24
What a tour de force by both the astonishing and wonderful author Julia Seales - she of the quill-sharp wit! - and her amazing partner in crime, Fiona Hampton, whose pitch-perfect narration flamboyantly brings to the airwaves the incredible characters and plot twists of this deliciously funny send-up of Regency murder/romances.
This was the funniest book I’ve either read or listened to in a very long time - deeply gratifying!! - and I simply didn’t want to put it down - *or* to have it end. At every turn the intrepid author and her dashing narrator delighted me with the unexpected: the outlandish and absurd - from the native luminescent frogs of Swampshire to impossibly capacious and useful hats - and the gratifyingly stereotype-breaking characters. I cannot wait for the next installment, and to hear the next collaboration of this amazing team!
On a deeper note, in the midst of all of this, Ms. Seales’ brilliantly assigning to a pater familia (rather than a female character) a recurrent case of what might centuries earlier have been called ‘the vapors’ showcases the degree to which weakness has been one of the pigments within the palette used to sketch women in literature throughout the centuries. The swapped-gender application of this condition to a male head of household truly confronted me in this book with both the power of that tradition, and its absurdity, along with (English!) luminescent frogs.
I’m already looking forward with great anticipation to the next volume/performance from this wildly talented duo: Brava, Ms. Seales!! Brava, Ms. Hampton!! Thank you for such a delight!

Sowerby, England, 1802. Miss Genevieve Wilde—a magistrate’s daughter and independent heiress—is determined to meet life’s challenges all on her own, just as her late-father had taught her. So when her father’s pocket watch is stolen, she will do anything to get it back, especially when the local authorities prove incompetent. Upon reading an advertisement in the paper, she takes a chance and contacts a thief-taker to find the watch. It’s a choice Ginny regrets when former Bow Street officer Jack Travers arrives on her doorstep.

A truly lovely storyteller, and a wonderful narrator: a delectable combination!
Revisado: 12-26-23
This is the first novel I’ve read or listened to from Joanna Barker, and I was deeply struck with how wonderful a storyteller she is: gifted and beguiling. Discovering a wonderful writer is such a joy - and I experienced that pleasure with Ms. Barker’s work. It was deeply gratifying to discover her writing, and to listen to it performed. Elizabeth Knowelden was perfect as her narrator: she so charmingly brought this story into performance. Both Ms. Barker and Ms. Knowelden were wonderful in the humorous moments in the novel, too: so very endearing! I now want to read all of Ms. Barker’s works, and hope that Ms. Knowelden has collaborated with her on additional novels as well. Kudos to them both! Wonderfully done!!

Georgette Heyer and Phyllida Nash form a *brilliant* duo for this sparkling story and performance! How could I possibly have waited so long to listen to this again? If nothing else, the redoubtable Miss Sarah Thane should have brought me back every few months, for pure joy. I want to listen to it all over again, right now, if for no other reason other than the tremendous wit, and laughter. I remain deeply grateful to Ms. Heyer and Ms. Nash for the pure joy I felt in their company - and will now add it to my new ‘take annually or more often as needed’ list! May you enjoy the ride as well!

Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

Astonishing: subtle, lyrical, poignant: I didn’t want it to end, but couldn’t make myself stop listening…
Revisado: 07-17-22
It’s hard to know where to begin!
I’m deeply grateful to you, Pip Williams, for conceiving and nurturing and birthing this phenomenal book, and to you, Pippa Bennett-Warner, for so masterfully giving literal voice to these amazing characters. I didn’t want this book to end!!
How many times I had to stop listening to record a line that had struck home deeply for me - and listened long past my bedtime because I didn’t want to leave the story for sleep. Today, though, I’m feeling a bit bereft, because - like all great novels - it had to come to an end.
But thank you both, so very much, for bringing me along on this wonderful journey. I will be looking forward so very much to reading your future works, Ms. Williams, and hearing your voice again, Ms.Bennett-Warner. Bless you both! Until we meet again…

What a wonderful book!
Revisado: 06-02-22
This book has lyrically brought to life a courageous young woman, a wonderful cast of characters, and a journey of discovery previously lost (to me, and apparently to most Americans) in the mists of almost three centuries. Ms. Boyd’s wonderful unfurling of Eliza Lucas’s story, and Ms. Maarleveld’s moving performance have made this book - and Ms. Lucas - a wonderful discovery! I highly recommend this wonderful book and great adventure!

Revisado: 08-30-21
I’ve just finished listening to ‘The Grand Sophy’ for the third time in the past dozen years - and have decided that I need to listen to it at least annually from now on. Georgette Heyer’s wit is sharp and sparkling in this wonderful story, and Sarah Woodward’s narration is magnificently delicious: incredible! I’m considering plunging back in, to listen to it all over again: a winning combination of brilliant writing and brilliant narration. Brava!! Brava!!
