I can spin gold, I lie. With my life at stake, I have no other choice. I get one chance to turn my lie into truth, and I'm shocked when I succeed. But now the cruel human king demands I become his wifepassing between his bed and being locked away in a tower, spinning gold until my last breath. My only way out is to summon him. A brutal Fae prince. The deal we strike is sickening, but it's the only way I'll live after I'm caught escaping. My new captor drags me back to his realm.

well, that was mostly enjoyable!

it really hooked me in by the end. not fantastic, but interesting enough to keep me going and want to read more of the series. there's a lot of unaddressed plot points I hope will be solved by the end of the story, so I'm forgiving those for now - more of what annoyed me the most is how this is pegged as "dark fantasy" when it really just feels more like "uncensored." nothing felt particularly "dark" - there were just no cutaways when the fantasy violence happened. that, and specific to the audiobook - there's the narrator's tendency to pronounce g's at the end of words like k's. lord idk if that's a normal thing to do or not but that REALLY felt infuriating.
the rumpelstiltskin and beauty and the beast notes are VERY prominent. the combo felt unique! generally though, it's overall enjoyable in all the ways you'd want a book to be, yes, but I found it sort of amateur. it's really not a bad book, but I've definitely read better.

okay - first and most importantly -
Revisado: 04-07-25
everything I enjoyed about this book - not necessarily LIKED, but enjoyed - is contingent upon the understanding that it's all fictional, and is essentially one giant fantasy. that helped me divorce it from reality and from my own moral standings, and helped me to enjoy the story for what it is. the one big thing that I COULD NOT divorce from reality is the disgusting wealth and upper-class-ness of it all. there's nothing fictional about that, and it docked a full star from the rating. it almost docked a second star, but for everything else that actually seemed relatively well handled. idk, I might come back later and still remove that second star.
I... this book gave me thoughts. and I have no idea how to describe any of them. it's like if two toxic, wealthy people got together in a toxic way and by the end of things their toxicity actually helped bring each other up into better people and raising a healthy family. somehow. one way or another. it felt like if either of them were with anybody else it would be SO HORRIDLY ABUSIVE but because they're with each other it actually made them better.
and yeah, this has HARD BDSM in it. and collects triggering situations like they're seashells. MMC is a SUPER hard dom, and definitely has nasty, controlling, stalkerish, abusive aspects to him - but nothing like in 50 shades. FMC meets him blow for blow here, and it's also all part of the kink for her. it feels like he only does those things because she allows him to. that's not to say at all that this is an appropriate reflection of proper BDSM - some parts are, yes, but definitely only a few. most of it is very toxic, and it can fall with the merest push on either side of the knife edge of blatant misogyny or consensual power kink.
definitely definitely definitely check the content warnings of this one before you pick it up yourself though. when it says dark it means DARK.
it's so hard to believe though that the kids in this book are just college-aged. like. really? they're still just babies. they're allegedly 22 years old at MOST. idk. especially with the MMC audiobook narrator sounding like he's at least 30+. that's probably the most unbelievable thing about the whole story for me.
yeah though for all the criticisms and cautions, there are good parts too, that I have no idea how to talk about frankly. like, is it possible to be toxic and a good person at the same time? the internet would have you believe no. but lived experiences tell me that it just might be. anything else feels like I'd need to unpack like a dissertation, and honestly, ain't nobody got time for that. 💕
you'll enjoy this if dark romances are your bread and butter; you definitely won't if you feel like you'd be easily upsettable. but either way though, trust me - the revenges make it all worth it. 🔪

When I wake up on the ice planet, I'm scared of everything: This place is cold, silent, and the locals look more like blue devils than aliens. To make matters worse, one of the strangers decides I'm going to be his girlfriend and kidnaps me away from my sister. I'm completely and utterly alone. What's a girl to do? Well, this girl escapes. Just when I have no hope left, a new hero appears. Sure, he's blue, horned, and has a tail. He's also fierce, protective, makes me purr...and thinks I'm perfect. But is what we have real or just a mating instinct?

this one was so well done! I loved it!
Revisado: 03-15-25
Lila being a fully deaf FMC was handled so well. and Madi, her sister, is.... extremely dislikable lol. I really want her to meet up with Liz and have her tell her to quit being such an unnecessary b**ch. like I'm actually disappointed her book is next. but Lila and Rokan are so sweet and so cute, and I love the addition of humanizing the Metlak.
idk, I really wish a review for a book I liked so much could be appropriately long, but here we are. I might throw in more stuff as I remember it, but I think this one's my favorite one in the series so far!

talk about a SLOW BURN romance, holy shit.
so this gave me big TOG vibes, in intricacy and elegance and beautiful world building and - idk I probably shouldn't be comparing any story to another story, but Throne of Glass remains one of my favorite series ever and so for anything to make me feel the same way reading it that I did reading THAT is some of the highest praise I can give.
Loren... is not a smart person lol. so many times, particularly in the first half or so, I was brick-to-face reminded of how young she is. she's like... 19? 20? and is so painfully obviously still developing emotional maturity. just, wuff.
luckily, Darien never took any of her bs though lol so it wasn't so bad in the end, really. it's just all I can think of in terms of a real gripe with this story. I also realized just how much Loren and Dallis aren't my type of people - like, boy-crazy party-hopping out-late-clubbing-every-weekend type college girls - but, hey, I don't have to think I'd be friends with characters in order to like them lol. and besides, everyone had some pretty impressive character growth by the end, and they all started to grow on me a good bit.
this was just a gut choice to listen to on audible, and I'm so glad that I did - I think I may have even made the better choice, listening to it rather than traditional reading. the voice acting is part of what did it so well for me.
as usual, my reviews don't do a good book justice. ah well. just know I want to buy this one to keep on my shelves lol.

that one really took a while to get going
Revisado: 01-10-25
that one really took a while to get going - Josie started off being rather, well, selfish and stupid and INCREDIBLY stubborn and annoying. Haeden wasn't much better either - the man really needed to learn how to communicate and quit projecting. things did start to get better about two-thirds of the way in though, and when it got better, it REALLY got better. Josie and Haeden's relationship, once it turned romantic, affected me the most out of all of them so far. 🥵 plus I find I really didn't mind the same-ness this time. I read another short smut series in between books of this one, and just, hoo, boy, it didn't compare lol. I was so very glad to come back to ol' reliable here and remember how it's supposed to be done.
that END though. that is so friggen abrupt. I'm really not a fan that it ends without real introductions of the new girl or without explanation of what happened on the journey back, but I mean, meh I guess. it'll take me a bit to get to that, there are two short novellas next to get through first lol.

It's hard being the most popular girl on the ice planet. The alien men are falling all over themselves to impress me in the hopes that I'll take them to my furs. But they don't know my secrets - none of them do. And they don't realize that behind my smile, I just wish they'd go away. I don't want any of them. I want someone else - someone with a gorgeous blue body, big horns, and the most intense gaze ever. He's the only one that knows the truth. Maybe with him, I can work through my fears of the past...but I'm pretty sure he wants more than just friendship.

let this book, above all the others, be a testament to why you should absolutely not judge a book by its title 😂💀💀💀
it does sort of make sense, since spending time with the FMC is an actual prize of an actual competition, but just... yikes. lol.
so bigtime CW: rape - it's in the past and does not happen on-page in flashbacks, but the entire story is about Tiffany moving past her trauma as a survivor. be careful with this if you're going through something similar.
which, speaking of which, as someone who once DID have to go through something similar, I'm not sure why Tiff's healing process irritated me so much. people process trauma differently, and their paths of recovery are all different, I know that, but HOO boy this one was testing my patience. I'm not sure if it was at Tiff herself or at all the people pushing her, or just the lack of anyone really being able to stand up for her, but at one point I sort of wanted to wade in there and just punch everyone for playing stupid games and not being direct.
it's also good that I very much love the romance between resonance mates, cause now that I've finished five couples' worth of stories there's a definite sameness to it all. and it still definitely turns into a definite turn-off as soon as pregnancy gets introduced. I know, I know, it's the whole point, resonance only happens to make babies in the first place, but, ugh.
so yeah I have my gripes - but honestly I truly feel just whatever about those! the rest of it stayed true to the series I've really grown to love. cringe titles and all. 🤣

that was a satisfying end to the duology!
Revisado: 12-16-24
I thoroughly enjoyed that the first part of this was the reaction I wanted at the end of the first book, and Tullia's recovery and growth are so heartwarming and satisfying. there were some parts that actively lost me in explanation though, where I truly had no idea what was going on, and there was a lot of... wasted potential. particularly with Tullia's powers of animal communication. did anyone else want an army of animals to attack something, Snow White style from Shrek 3? cause I definitely did.
but, if you don't look at things too long or take anything too seriously, the nice HEA ending was super cute and satisfying. and wearing scars like jewelry TOG-Aelin-style made me almost weepy. 😭💪🏻

The ice planet has given me a second lease on life, so I'm thrilled to be here. Sure, there's no cheeseburgers, but I'm healthy and ready to be a productive member of the small tribe. What I didn't anticipate was that there'd be a savage stranger waiting nearby, watching me. And when he takes me captive, the unthinkable happens . . . I resonate to him. Resonance means mating and children . . . but I don't know if this guy's ever been around anyone before. He's truly a barbarian in all ways, right down to clubbing me over the head and claiming me as his own.

My presence here endangers everyone...but can I give up my new life and the man I want more than anything?

SO CUTE.
Revisado: 11-16-24
oh gosh this book and this pairing might be my favorite one yet. it is so cute and sweet and wholesome, and I friggen LOVE Aehako. Kira's lack of self esteem definitely grates at times, and I almost threw my phone when she initially tried to decide she'd tell no one about the aliens returning, but thank christ that didn't last long. and I can't say that it's portrayed unrealistically either.
and we're back to everyone's wants aligning! it took a bit to get there, but by the end Kira and Aehako get everything they were dreaming of having and they get their fairy tale ending, and just, the FLUFF level, and it's SO sweet, and Aehako is definitely the most kinky guy so far. hello, using his courting gift on Kira during playtime. 🥵🥵

not as fluffy as the first
Revisado: 11-07-24
but still good overall! real conflict was introduced this time, and peoples' wants DEFINITELY did not align. which I suppose is fine, since there's a HEA and everything ends up working out, but I kind of missed the cozy fairy tale aspect from the first book.
Liz's attitude eventually started sort of growing on me, since she used it ultimately for justice, but generally she's F'N annoying. she's hypocritical and selfish, and the constant slang use in conversations with people who clearly don't understand it was really getting old. but I was on her side by the end of it, and even everyone else seemed to take on the general attitude of "GOD you're annoying" - but affectionately - with her. and that's a stance I can live with.
I suppose I'm gonna backtrack a little bit to the Vektal / Georgie novella now before moving on to book three!
