Historia
In Gotham, Edwin G. Burrows and Mike Wallace have produced a monumental work of history, one that ranges from the Indian tribes that settled in and around the island of Manna-hata, to the consolidation of the five boroughs into Greater New York in 1898. It is an epic narrative, a story as vast and as varied as the city it chronicles, and it underscores that the history of New York is the story of our nation. The events and people who crowd this audiobook guarantee that this is no mere local history. It is in fact a portrait of the heart and soul of America....

Everything you wanted to know about NYC history
Revisado: 12-27-19
Wow. This book has so many details that some may find it trivial. The book has been well researched and some will find it uninteresting at times but stay with it if you are a fan of the Big Apple. Be ready for lots of history from 1626 to 1840. LEarn what Peter Stuyvesant had for breakfast.

Historia
Critics hated it. The public feared it would topple over. Passersby were knocked down by the winds. But even before it was completed, the Flatiron Building had become an unforgettable part of New York City. The Flatiron Building was built by the Chicago-based Fuller Company - a group founded by George Fuller, "the father of the skyscraper" - to be their New York headquarters. The company's president, Harry Black, was never able to make the public call the Flatiron the Fuller Building, however. In The Flatiron, Alice Sparberg Alexiou chronicles not just the story of the building but the heady times in New York at the dawn of the 20th century.

Is this narrator a computer?
Revisado: 05-18-19
With so many words being mispronounced, I thought the narrator was a computer program. I cringed every time I heard a word or name mispronounced. I was shocked to learn that the narrator was really a person. Not enough to take away from the story but enough to distract and lessen the experience of the read. Some may not be bothered by this but if you know the correct pronunciation and focus on articulation, then these things will bother you.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I found this book to be both accurate and informative as it presents facts that other books on GCT haven't published which tells me the author did their homework. Presents the original intent of GCT as well as the roller coaster this piece of real estate has been through in the NYC market. Well done. Add a star of you like NY landmarks, add another if you are a railroad enthusiast, add another if you are a mechanical engineer.
What did you like best about this story?
The coverage of past to now
What about Sam Roberts’s performance did you like?

Now in a third edition, Robert M. Sapolsky's acclaimed and successful Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers features new chapters on how stress affects sleep and addiction, as well as new insights into anxiety and personality disorder and the impact of spirituality on managing stress. As Sapolsky explains, most of us do not lie awake at night worrying about whether we have leprosy or malaria. Instead, the diseases we fear-and the ones that plague us now-are illnesses brought on by the slow accumulation of damage, such as heart disease and cancer.

Welcome to the 4th grade History class
Revisado: 01-14-15
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
It's one thing to skim a topic but having in depth knowledge of more than one of the incidents cited in this book it left me questioning the validity of the rest. Loosely connected trivia doesn't do well to accentuate the disasters but they are included for someone's sake.
It read like my elementary school social studies book with text and descriptions that suits that age group. I was hoping for much more as an avid reader of 20th century history.
What was most disappointing about Brenda Guiberson’s story?
The descriptions
Would you be willing to try another one of Nelson Runger’s performances?
No
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
One of the disasters was accurately described in my opinion.
Any additional comments?
Recommended for anyone looking to learn enough about a disaster to discuss it briefly at a cocktail party.

Historia
On December 18, 1867, the Buffalo and Erie Railroad's eastbound New York Express derailed as it approached the high truss bridge over Big Sister Creek, just east of the small settlement of Angola, New York, on the shores of Lake Erie. The last two cars of the express train were pitched completely off the tracks and plummeted into the creek bed below. When they struck bottom, one of the wrecked cars was immediately engulfed in flames as the heating stoves in the coach spilled out coals and ignited its wooden timbers
