Historia
Marguerite Higgins was both the scourge and envy of the journalistic world. A longtime reporter for the New York Herald Tribune, she first catapulted to fame with her dramatic account of the liberation of Dachau at the end of World War II. Brash, beautiful, ruthlessly competitive, and sexually adventurous, she forced her way to the front despite being told the combat zone was no place for a woman. While the Herald Tribune exploited her feminine appeal—it was Maggie's dogged determination, talent for breaking news, and unwavering ambition that brought her success from one war zone to another.

Bland and tabloid-like
Revisado: 03-21-24
I expected and was hoping for so much more. It felt like I was listening to a tabloid article. And, now that I'm no longer a paying audible member I can't return it. A waste of money.

Simile pile on
Revisado: 03-15-21
I made it through the first few chapters and then had to return it. The writer can't seem to go a paragraph without weaving in a simile; it's as though that's the only writing technique he knows - not even a metaphor mixed in. It got to be way too much. Where are the editors these days? Had to return it.

Narrator doesn’t fit
Revisado: 05-08-18
Great book and the narrator (author) does a fine job. But, it would have been so much better w an older voice doing the narration. Perhaps the author is like the main character?

Very obvious 'twist'
Revisado: 10-01-16
How can the 'smartest lawyer in Chicago' not connect that the antagonist's pre-war girlfriend might be his post-war wife, especially when they have the same first name? Duh. Where was the editor on this book?

Historia
John Hart creates a literary thriller that is as suspenseful as it is poignant, a riveting murder mystery layered beneath the southern drawl of a humble North Carolina lawyer. When Work Pickens finds his father murdered, the investigation pushes a repressed family history to the surface and he sees his own carefully constructed facade begin to crack.

Good story concept. Weak writing.
Revisado: 03-26-15
Weak writing and storyline editing. Marginal narration. Eg. Hesitated mid sentence at line breaks, pronounced 'sit rep' as 'site rep'...
