Good story, terrible narrator.

I enjoyed this book. Society collapses and there isn't anything that resembles a zombie anywhere in sight. I love me up some well-written zombie stories, but this is a refreshing take on the "civilization is over" sort of story. That being said, Duke Fontaine is not a good narrator. He doesn't even try to do different voices for different characters, and generally just speaks in monotone. I'm probably going to finish this series on paper.

Believable. This book is sci-fi, but the 'sci' part of it is all technology that actually exists. The 'fi' side of it is the human drama. Every character in the story has some depth, and Mark Watney is a guy I really wish I could sit down and have a beer with. Not only does he have the kind of intelligence and ingenuity that you'd want in an astronaut on a Mars mission, but the guy has a great sense of humor. I seriously did laugh out loud more than once listening to this book, and R.C. Bray's narration fit the story incredibly well. I also teared up more than once during this story as well. The drama feels real. These characters are people. Everything in this book sounds like something that could actually happen. I can't wait to see what else Andy Weir writes next. I'm also looking at the other books that R.C. Bray has narrated because that man is very good at what he does.

Really enjoyed it, but I'm not entirely sure why.

I originally got this book because I wanted to hear Katherine Kellgren read me another story. She's the absolute best audiobook reader I've ever listened to. The book reads like a diary, and the magic and Sci-Fi I was promised by the summary was very lacking. The Sci-Fi only really shows up as the main character drops constant shout-outs to her favorite SF authors, and the magic isn't as prominent as I expected. That said, I had trouble putting it down until I finished it. Despite the story not really being exciting, it was well written and never lost my attention. Katherine Kellgren knocked it out of the park again with her performance, as well. I can't point to any specific reason that I liked this book, but I would recommend it to anyone who has read a lot of science fiction or anyone who just wants to hear one of the best in the business read a really good story.
