One of the best-written fantasy series I've read
Revisado: 05-06-25
it has all of the necessary bits: truly comprehensive world building; unique and real characters with foibles, flaws, and charms from across all genders, ages, races, sexual preferences, and dispositions; magic; evil doers; a worthy yet not easily attained goal; a romance or two; and action and adventure. And, although I believe that the series is appropriate for preteen, it isn't boring or lacking the complexity and nuance needed to hold adult interest. I am five books in and have been continually pleased at the solid continuity of execution of high-level writing in all the aforementioned areas. Practically flawless. I cannot recommend this series more often or highly.

Historia
City-by-city, kingdom-by-kingdom, the Palleseen have sworn to bring Perfection and Correctness to an imperfect world. As their legions scour the world of superstition with the bright flame of reason, so they deliver a mountain of ragged, holed and scorched flesh to the field hospital tents just behind the frontline. Which is where Yasnic, one-time priest, healer and rebel, finds himself. Reprieved from the gallows and sent to war clutching a box of orphan Gods, he has been sequestered to a particularity unorthodox medical unit.

Historia
There has always been a darkness to Ilmar, but never more so than now. The city chafes under the heavy hand of the Palleseen occupation, the choke-hold of its criminal underworld, the boot of its factory owners, the weight of its wretched poor and the burden of its ancient curse. What will be the spark that lights the conflagration? Despite the city's refugees, wanderers, murderers, madmen, fanatics and thieves, the catalyst, as always, will be the Anchorwood–that dark grove of trees, that primeval remnant, that portal, when the moon is full, to strange and distant shores.

I'd like to be there in this End of the World
Revisado: 08-31-24
The writing of this book is spectacular—the characters are so well written. You could see them as your friends, your enemies, people you know, people you don't want to know any better, strangers—they're all in here. None of the storylines have seemed unbelievable, out of place, or unrealistic. I'm so hungry for more that I bought the second book about two hours into the story.

A true standout among the wealth of historical fiction with storylines about or otherwise centered around mythological characters, especially females. Entertaining and informative series about the lives of non-ruling class women in Ancient Rome and Greece.

Maire is a baker with an extraordinary gift: she can infuse her treats with emotions and abilities, which are then passed on to those who eat them. She doesn't know why she can do this and remembers nothing of who she is or where she came from. When marauders raid her town, Maire is captured and sold to the eccentric Allemas, who enslaves her and demands that she produce sinister confections, including a witch's gingerbread cottage, a living cookie boy, and size-altering cakes.

Everything a story should be
Revisado: 02-17-22
Wow. I had read her previous novels and thought she was a great writer, but this book truly sets Charlie Holmberg apart from most other contemporary novelists. Original doesn't begin to describe this story. I've put this book in my Favorites collection and know I'll reread it gaain, as well as highly recommend it. Narration was sheer perfection.

Relevatory and Meaningful
Revisado: 05-21-20
A searingly intimate portrait of the toll exacted on a family after a father receives a diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer's disease in the prime of his life and before his wife's dreams can be fully realized or made peace with, and after multiple generations dedicated themselves to hard work and sacrifice to create their opportunity and family legacy. Initially, he and his wife go about pretending that nothing is amiss, while those he interacts with are left confused, angry or concerned. His ability to function independently quickly all but evaporates and everyone that Ed interacts with at work and in his personal life are stunned by the changes in him. But it is Eileen who has to simultaneously contemplate and confront her upcoming greiviously empty existence without Ed and provide physical and emotional care to him as he is unbecoming himself.
Unflinching and brutally honest are the scenes in which Ed, Eileen, his wife, or Connell, their son, are forced to confront the reality of each moment, and to acknowledge and begin processing the entirety of the loss to come.
I have never previously felt more emotionally invested in a novel. There is a letter written by a still cognizant Ed to Connell that made me sob for too long of a time. I am 49 and have been with my husband for 29 years. The shared intersections with the characters in this novel frighten and will now also guide me.
Should have won the Pulitzer for its year of publication.
