Historia
In late March 1944, as Stalin’s forces push into Ukraine, young Emil and Adeline Martel must make a terrible decision: Do they wait for the Soviet bear’s intrusion and risk being sent to Siberia? Or do they reluctantly follow the wolves - murderous Nazi officers who have pledged to protect “pure-blood” Germans? The Martels are one of many families of German heritage whose ancestors have farmed in Ukraine for more than a century.

Historia
Felicia “Fe Fe” Stevens is living with her vigilantly loving mother and older teenaged brother, whom she adores, in building 4950 of Chicago’s Robert Taylor Homes. It’s the summer of 1999, and her high-rise is next in line to be torn down by the Chicago Housing Authority. She, with the devout Precious Brown and Stacia Buchanan, daughter of a Gangster Disciple Queen-Pin, form a tentative trio and, for a brief moment, carve out for themselves a simple life of Double Dutch and innocence.

This story was wonderfully told. Describing a pivotal year in a 12 year olds life in a gang controlled project, it is tough but hold on to hope and redemption.

Vera Wong is a lonely little old lady—ah, lady of a certain age—who lives above her forgotten tea shop in the middle of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Despite living alone, Vera is not needy, oh no. She likes nothing more than sipping on a good cup of Wulong and doing some healthy detective work on the Internet about what her Gen-Z son is up to. Then one morning, Vera trudges downstairs to find a curious thing—a dead man in the middle of her tea shop.

what a fresh and funny ( mostly!) story. Great characters, really interesting plot, and a redemptive feel, as characters find connection through the murder of a nasty piece of work, who deserved to die.

I've always loved Lisa Scottolini's books, but enjoyed this one especially, as it was a historical novel about such an important subject. I especially appreciated that faith was woven through it.

ugh
Revisado: 03-31-22
From the moment the protagonist was described as"full breasted" ( a description also given to two other women in the book) I had a feeling this book wouldn't be right for me. Trite, melodramatic at times, and with a quite unbelievable plot. Read it, but returned it.

Overblown but decent story
Revisado: 01-08-22
I understand that this author usually writes romance novels, and that comes through in this book. It was essentially an interesting book, but I personally don't like the kind of trite descriptions of characters that tend to go with romance novels, and which were the only real detractor to my enjoying this book. Others who like romance novels would probably love it wholeheartedly.
