Riveting story
Revisado: 11-09-24
Fantastic story that moves between past and present with reasonably easy-to-follow transitions. The characters were real, the story has depth and maintained my interest to the end.

Hope for climbers in the second half of life
Revisado: 10-31-24
I didn’t realize this was Alex Honnald’s mother. I was just interested to hear the story of how someone like me, who came to climbing later in life, was able to build enough skill and fitness to climb El Capitan. This book gave me hope for my own journey as a climber. I appreciated the honesty of the writing and the insecurities that Dierdre shared. We’re all fallible humans who experience challenges in life, but if we work hard we can achieve extraordinary things.

Historia
Many astonishing and affecting things happen at the racetrack, and the mysterious universe of horse racing, passionate, cold-hearted, pure, corrupt, is woven into a marvelous tapestry of joy and love, chicanery, folly, greed, and reckless courage. Spanning two years on the circuit, from Kentucky and California to New York and Paris, Horse Heaven, puts us among trainers, nervey jockeys, billionaire breeders, and restless track wives.

Heaven indeed
Revisado: 10-21-22
I love this book so much that I just listened to it three times in a uccession. The characters are so real, and Jane Smiley understands the horse world because she is a horseman. One of my favorite books of all time.

Historia
Benjamin Graham developed "value investing", a style adopted by Warren Buffett, one of history's most successful investors. It is based on "fundamental analysis", which quantitatively compares a company's stock price to various measures of financial strength and promise. "Growth investing" is a fundamentally different style that seeks to identify tomorrow's great business successes. Learn the ins and outs, and the pros and cons, of these basic investment styles.

This is a great introduction to the difference between value and growth investing strategies. I’ve listened to it several times and expect to refer back to it again.

It’s amazing what bodily injury can do for a man. A fall from a racehorse left brilliant jockey Sid Halley dangerously depressed, with a wrecked hand and the need for a new career. It was a bullet wound that helped him find one.

You never go wrong with Sid Halley
Revisado: 01-09-22
I first read this in print many years ago, it stands the test of time. Dick Francis and one of his most enduring characters are just as exciting and relevant in 2021 as they were in 1961. Moral of the story-be tough, stop the bad guys from doing bad things.

Historia
Hellsmouth, an indomitable thoroughbred with the blood of Triple Crown winners in her veins, runs for the glory of the Forge family, one of Kentucky's oldest and most powerful dynasties. Henry Forge has partnered with his daughter, Henrietta, in an endeavor of raw obsession: to breed the next superhorse, the next Secretariat. But when Allmon Shaughnessy, an ambitious young black man, comes to work on their farm after a stint in prison, the violence of the Forges' history and the exigencies of appetite are brought starkly into view.

Brutality is the central theme
Revisado: 01-08-22
This is a horrible book full of brutality toward people and horses. If you care about either, don’t waste your time. I gave it a couple of hours hoping that the tone would change and that I would begin to see some redeeming value to the story, but it just got worse and worse. I’m grateful for the return policy so that I can get something that actually uplifts rather than focusing on the worst characteristics of the human race.

Fantastic and true story
Revisado: 02-16-21
This was a beautifully written story about a very difficult life situation and the complicated relationships surrounding it. The author thoroughly grasps and accurately describes the terribly difficult decisions parents sometimes have to make for their children, and provides a glimpse at how resilient children can be in the midst of terrible circumstances. Through it all the joy of life with a young child shines through. This one will stick with me for a long time.

This was my favorite audible original so far, with likeable and interesting characters, and an entertaining storyline with a few twists and turns along the way. Good fun on a Sunday afternoon. Now I have to go eat some ice cream.

Don’t be duped
Revisado: 04-14-18
This is a terrible book and I would give it zero stars if I could. Juvenile male writing. I usually avoid books like this but read some reviews comparing it to truly great works of fantasy such as Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. What a joke, shouldn’t be mentioned in the same breath. Don’t waste your time or money on this one

Immersive
Revisado: 04-29-17
This is a great story with great characters. I found it much more immersive and interesting than Rules of Civility, and I think it adds to the great works of literature that describe the changes in Russia/USSR over the 20th century. Highly recommended.
