Historia
From trips on private jets and encounters with world leaders to shocking accounts of misogyny and double standards behind the scenes, this searing memoir exposes both the personal and the political fallout when unfettered power and a rotten company culture take hold. In a gripping and often absurd narrative where a few people carelessly hold the world in their hands, this eye-opening memoir reveals what really goes on among the global elite.

Infuriating insights bogged down by repetition and vague timelines
Revisado: 04-02-25
Interesting overall but loads of problems with how things were delivered. Ultimately made me hate the dangerous people I already disliked even more - but the author waits to the very end to really accept any sort of accountability, throughout the book talking about how she chided others for actions saying the ‘following orders’ defense doesn’t work … then proceeded to follow orders for a few more years. At no point did she blow the whistle … I lack sympathy for these people who say all the right things several years too late despite knowing the impact in the moment. This doesn’t wash the blood off your hands.

Ten months. That’s the longest Elisa has stayed anyplace, constantly propelled by her fear that if she puts down roots, a family curse will turn her into a tree. But she’s grown tired of flitting from town to town and in and out of relationships. When she discovers a small town in Massachusetts where mysterious forces make it impossible for the residents to leave, she hopes she can change her fate.

Well written, but did I even like it?
Revisado: 03-20-25
I was more than 80% through this book and was asking myself ‘do I even like this book’? And in the end it was … fine? The Warbler is the story of three women - Rose, Lori and Elisa - and their dreams and limitations. There is a mystery Elisa is seeking clues to solve, and that is the main plot line of the book. But unfortunately the ‘clues’ were more like flashing screens in Times Square in their lack of subtlety. And that ends up making for an overall mediocre experience - because for quite a while all I could think was “it can’t all be that simple and obvious, can it?”

Jez, a grumpy Fennex, wants nothing to do with the cold, snow or bustling winter games descending on the charming town of Adenashire. She’d rather curl up for a nap. But a drunken boast lands her smack in the middle of the festivities and, even worse, fake dating her friend, Taenya, a woodland elf. Plagued by chronic fatigue and past heartbreak, Jez has long guarded her heart.

I can’t discuss it without spoilers, but there was a single thing that kept this from being a 4.5 or 5 star (round up). So happy but a little frustrated!

Overall decent but too much talking
Revisado: 02-03-25
Looking back after the end the story and romance were decent - but it was too little content in both areas for the overall length of the book. The need to overexplain and overanalyze EVERYTHING really surfaced in the 2nd and especially 3rd book of the Tea Princess books … so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised it is here as well. I bought this while enjoying that series - not sure I will try another one by this author.

Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Two books in need of a good edit slammed together
Revisado: 01-29-25
I liked this more than Fourth Wing, but it suffers the same issues. The sex scenes came in two nearly identical flavors, there had to have been a hundred pages discussing the semantics of proper questioning and so on. Everything feels rushed - but mostly how it felt like two poorly edited books slammed together. Ultimately I am not a fan of either lead character or their relationship. If they could both die and their dragons pair up with better characters I’d be more likely to read the next one.

Historia
Transformative and breathtakingly honest, The American Queen is based on actual events that occurred between 1865 - 1889 and shares the unsung history of a Black woman who built a kingdom in Appalachia as a refuge for the courageous people who dared to dream of a different way of life. Over the twenty-four years she was enslaved on the Montgomery Plantation, Louella learned to feel one thing: hate. Hate for the man who sold her mother. Hate for the overseer who left her daddy to hang from a noose. Hate so powerful there's no room in her heart for love.

Heartbreaking and Heartwarming Tale You Probably Never Heard
Revisado: 11-21-24
As the saying goes, those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. The formerly enslaved people who traveled out of Mississippi to eventually found Happy Land were determined to not let their history repeat itself despite living in a world that did not see their value as human beings. They were led by Louella and her husband William, later named King and Queen of the place they all built together.
This historical novel is at once heartwarming and heartbreaking, telling an important true story of the human spirit and the desire to build something wonderful out of a trail of terrible events. It was so hard at times reading the injustices and knowing that many of them exist to this day - but seeing what people will endure and persevere was a triumph.
The author skillfully weaves a strong story that utilizes all known historical details while filling the gaps seamlessly - even admitting to adding a few things that were not known but that she wished had happened but ultimately had no impact on the story.
You cannot leave a book like this untouched - it is a reminder of everything great and shameful about this country, and also that we are fortunate that while history is captured by the oppressors, sometimes stories like this are maintained over time. I am thankful to be touched by this one.

Historia
The story that made Agatha Christie famous ends with one of her most dramatic twists. The villagers of King’s Abbot are shocked when a wealthy local widow commits suicide and the very next day her fiancé, Roger Ackroyd, is stabbed to death. Dr. James Sheppard, the local physician, discovers the body of his friend and narrates the ensuing hunt for the killer. All the guests and staff at Ackroyd's country house seem to have solid alibis - except for his missing stepson.
