It began as a game, a treasure hunt in an old German castle. For Vicky Bliss, tall, beautiful, and brilliant, it is also a challenge, a chance to bring an arrogant young man down a notch or two. And all things considered, it would have been no contest.

The first of the Vicky Bliss series
Revisado: 03-06-25
Excellent story, and overall it’s well narrated. But annoying that the city’s name, the setting where most of the book takes place, is repeatedly mispronounced!
The German language does not have the “TH” sound which English uses.
The city of Rothenburg is pronounced
ROTE-en-burg.
For English readers and listeners, the first syllable (Roth) rhymes with coat and note, not with moth - Ignore the h in the spelling..

Historia
Young and passionately in love, Clara and Ben Pipestone came from vastly different worlds. She was a college student, studying the indigenous people of the Great Plains. He fixed cars in the winter and followed the amateur Indian rodeo circuit all summer. Ignoring those who doomed their relationship to failure, they married, settled into their life in Bismarck, North Dakota, and had a beautiful daughter, Anna. But now, thirteen years later, Ben's alcoholism blurs his judgment and lands him in the arms of another woman.

Love the story, but yikes the misread words!
Revisado: 03-02-25
Excellent story, plot, and characters/backstory.
Good voice of narrator, but too many misread words and mispronunciations to be fully A-OK as listening pleasure.

Historia
At five and 20, Prudence Merryweather knew very well the risks a woman took by visiting a gentleman in the dead of night. But bearding the notorious Earl of Angelstone in his den was the only way to stop him from engaging her hot-headed brother in a duel. And that was why she found herself ushered into Sebastian's forbidding presence at three in the morning - and thoroughly kissed before dawn.

Worth the time, though not as great as her later books are. Still, very pleasing!
Revisado: 01-10-25
A good enjoyable story, though not as complex nor quite as fully fleshed-out as what she wrote in later years. Choose it, and enjoy the book!

Good plot but too many mispronunciations
Revisado: 12-27-24
The narrator has good voice tone and pacing, but ought to have made more of an effort to get words and names right!
Just a very quick online check today (2024) found pronunciations for Bredon, Balliol, and Keble.

I enjoy hot, but this was nearer to orn
Revisado: 10-25-24
I enjoy relationships. Some spiciness is fine, even quite a lot of hot encounters, but in my view, this came off as barely 15% actual human romance, as in, people getting to know each other, and about 85% rather routine ho-hum boinking.
I did read it to the end, but despite having very much liked nearly everything else by Elizabeth Lowell, this one was formulaic and only so-so.

A spa stay turns into a homicidal holiday.... A bit snobbish and a trifle high strung, Sybil Foster prides herself on owning the finest estate in Upper Quintern and hiring the best gardener. In fact she is rapturous over the new asparagus beds when a visit from her unwelcome stepson sends her scurrying to a chic spa for a rest cure, a liaison with the spa's director...and an apparent suicide. Her autopsy holds one surprise, a secret drawer a second.

Annoyingly, the narrator mispronounced the name of the lead character! I hated that.
Revisado: 09-12-24
Well-written, and in most respects well-voiced, but it's SO annoying that the narrator ignorantly mispronounces the name of Chief Superintendent Roderick Alleyn!
Here are the excuses. The author Ngaio Marsh wrote before audiobooks were popular. And she did clearly explain, many times in many books in the series, how Alleyn is pronounced, it's just like Alan, or Allen. The "y" is silent.
But this book is not one of the several where the author did explain that.
But, evidently the narrator hadn't read nor listened to any other books in this series. Apparently, nor had its audiobook editor!
Narrators and editors aren't doing it for free. They ought to at least get such basic things right. After all, that's what they're paid to do, isn't it?

Historia
A classic Ngaio Marsh novel which features blood-curdling murders in the confines of a riverboat, the Zodiac, cruising through Constable country. 'He looks upon the murders that he did in fact perform as tiresome and regrettable necessities', reflected Chief Superintendent Roderick Alleyn on the international crook known as 'the Jampot'.

Mispronounced the lead character's name through the first several chapters.
Revisado: 08-15-24
Mispronounced the lead character's name through several opening chapters, also a few other words, so I scored this narration as just middling. If the narrator had read this author's previous books, in several of them the name was explained.
Alleyn is pronounced like Alan and Allen. The "y" is completely silent.
Narrator's voice is good otherwise, however. Balanced, strong, and distinct.

The elderly Emily Pride is perfectly pleased to have inherited an island, even if her starchy pragmatism is ever so faintly appalled by the Pixie Falls spring and its reported miraculous healing properties. But really, the locals' attempts to capitalize on the 'miracles' are entirely too tacky - Ye Olde Gift Shoppe, the neon signs…not on Miss Emily’s watch, thank you.

It annoys me when the lead character's name is mispronounced.
Revisado: 08-13-24
Narration fairly good otherwise, but obviously the narrator hadn't read other books in the series. Alleyn - the y is completely silent! The name is not like the word allay plus n.
Alleyn sounds like Alan, or Allen.
However, careful and correct on a few other words like flaccid which is as if flax-id, not flassid.

The April Fool’s Day had been a roaring success for all, it seemed - except for poor Mr. Cartell, who had ended up in the ditch - forever. Then there was the case of Mr. Percival Pyke Period’s letter of condolence, sent before the body was found - not to mention the family squabbles. It was a puzzling crime for Superintendent Alleyn.

Good mystery, but narrator made too many mispronunciations
Revisado: 07-30-24
Narrator has a good voice but mispronounced the main character's name, another major character, and a standard word found in any dictionary. That's a lack of narrator's preparation and definitely an inadequate editor!
Alleyn pronounced correctly has been explained in Ngaio Marsh's previous books, it's said like Allen/Alan. The y is silent!
Plus, the narrator also messed up pronouncing Desirée which is not a rare name.
Also, unguent gets mispronounced by this narrator.
Regrettable, as all those errors are distracting/annoying to us listeners.
Why didn't any editor or staffer catch those errors and correct narrator?
Thus I couldn't give this audiobook 5 stars due to the narrator's too frequent errors.
