The story coupled with the performance made this an excellent listen! Loved the depth of characters and the rich saga story. Didn’t want it to end.

Historia
Twenty-eight-year-old Even Grade is a Black man who was orphaned as a child. 15-year-old Valuable Korner is a White girl who might as well have been orphaned. Petal, Mississippi, circa 1956, seems an unlikely spot for these two to connect, but a friendship forged across race lines is just one of many miracles waiting to happen in this small Southern town.

Fantastic listen
Revisado: 02-17-20
Not sure what I expected when I began this listen but it far exceeded anything I could have imagined! The performance was incredible bringing each of the characters to life and making me feel immersed in the scenes. A great way to get a history lesson!

Historia
In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls' school in Grosse Pointe, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry-blonde classmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between them - along with Callie's failure to develop physically - leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

Not what I expected.

Not sure I knew what this was going to be about when I began it but I really enjoyed the story probably in a large part by the performance of the narrator. His voice was rhythmic changing tones and tempos between characters and scenes when needed, I felt as if I was in the car with Milton during the chase seen!

Historia
The time is 1975. The place is an unnamed city by the sea. The government has just declared a State of Emergency, in whose upheavals four strangers—a spirited widow, a young student uprooted from his idyllic hill station, and two tailors who have fled the caste violence of their native village—will be thrust together, forced to share one cramped apartment and an uncertain future.

Good & Bad
Revisado: 12-20-18
If you like happy endings this is not the book for you. While the speaker’s voice helps you to visualize the characters and environment clearly the story line I’d hard to take. If it is a true and accurate portrayal of that period in India it is very sad.
