Historia
Prince Lyov Nikolayevitch Myshkin is one of the great characters in Russian literature. Is he a saint or just naïve? Is he an idealist or, as many in General Epanchin's society feel, an "idiot"? Certainly his return to St. Petersburg after years in a Swiss clinic has a dramatic effect on the beautiful Aglaia, youngest of the Epanchin daughters, and on the charismatic but willful Nastasya Filippovna. As he paints a vivid picture of Russian society, Dostoyevsky shows how principles conflict with emotions - with tragic results.

Drawn out but interesting
Revisado: 04-24-22
The whole time I was waiting for something interesting to happen.
****spoiler****
The idiot ends up being an actual idiot and no progress was made. Total waste of time.
The entire book you’re thinking that the protagonist is a nice guy that people keep taking advantage of but it turns out that he really doesn’t know better and actually reverts rather than progress in life.
Total waste of time.
High rating because it was well written, the characters were fully defined, and it kept engaged the whole time. The story itself, however, was disappointing.
Would not recommend.

Fantastic narration that gives life to the characters
Revisado: 06-26-21
I picked up this book for exactly one reason: Graeme Malcolm. I thoroughly enjoyed his part in Agatha Christie’s The Man in the Brown Suit, and immediately after finishing it searched his name for more of his work. I knew nothing about the story just the name of the book and the narrator, and that worked out fine for me. The book is set in the highlands in Scotland. There are many characters with distinct personalities and Graeme portrays them all wonderfully. They all have their own accents and ways of speaking and you really get a sense of the person even if they only appear briefly in a short conversation. It’s amazing. The story itself is decent. It’s entertaining and unfolds steadily with no great complexity or shocking revelations. The telling of the story though, that’s where it’s at. Give it a listen.

Historia
Visiting her family's South Carolina estate, socialite Gray Godfrey wakes from a night out to an empty bed. Her husband, Paul, is gone, and a thrashing hangover has wiped her memory clean. At first, she's relieved for the break from her tumultuous marriage; perhaps Paul just needed some space. But when his car is found abandoned on the highway, Gray must face the truth: Paul is gone. And Gray may not want him found. Her life is unraveling. When a stranger named Annie calls claiming to know Paul's whereabouts, Gray reluctantly accepts her help.

Great story, not great narration
Revisado: 06-26-21
I read this after having watched the Netflix show. Great show btw, would recommend. The story is engaging and keeps you hooked even if you really don’t know any of the chess jargon. The narrator, though, detracted from the experience for me. She did alright with the female voices, but the male voices were terrible. They all sounded the same and had no depth or character. Ok she did have a Russian accent that used for all the Russian male characters, but again no variation. Also her main narrator voice was distractingly clinical. I felt like Siri was reading me the story.

Michael Pollan, known for his best-selling nonfiction audio, including The Omnivores Dilemma and How to Change Your Mind, conceived and wrote Caffeine: How Caffeine Created the Modern World as an Audible Original. In this controversial and exciting listen, Pollan explores caffeine’s power as the most-used drug in the world - and the only one we give to children (in soda pop) as a treat.

Interesting topic and entertaining enough to get all the way through. It was a bit narcissistic in that the author made it about himself and then chose to narrate his own book himself. Also his voice was a bit distracting with his odd high pitches. Besides that though, the information was cool and really made me think about my own caffeine consumption. All in all, would recommend as a book, but maybe not this audible book.
