Historia
As the witch of the Chalk, Tiffany Aching performs the distinctly unglamorous work of caring for the needy. But someone—or something—is inciting fear, generating dark thoughts and angry murmurs against witches. Tiffany must find the source of unrest and defeat the evil at its root. Aided by the tiny-but-tough Wee Free Men, Tiffany faces a dire challenge, for if she falls, the whole Chalk falls with her. . . .

So smart. Discusses adult concepts with seriousness, insight, and (of course) humor. When reading this, it feels like proudly watching your daughter become the adult she was meant to be.

Historia
The Yellowstone super-eruption has put an end to modern civilization. As cities and countries continue to fall, the colony of Rivendell in the alternate Earth known as Outland looks more and more like the only real hope for humanity. But life in Rivendell isn’t getting any simpler, either. Bill and Kevin continue to discover new worlds; the population continues to rise; winter is approaching; and everyone has their own opinion about how things should be run.

Wonderful sophomore book of a series
Revisado: 02-21-23
For all the haters out there, I’m over 40 and I really enjoyed this!
This is a great sophomore book of a series. It picks off where last ended and it adds more complexity to the world. Yes, there’s a lot of politics. It’s a new society being built with lots of different people; how did people not expect politics to be important to building that society? It discusses the morality of looking for refugees and the changes in reality some have to face when normally in a place of privilege.
I can’t wait until the next book. I’ll preorder it as soon as I’m able.

Historia
Judith Potts is 77 years old and blissfully happy. She lives on her own in a faded mansion just outside Marlow, there’s no man in her life to tell her what to do or how much whisky to drink, and to keep herself busy she sets crosswords for The Times newspaper. One evening, while out swimming in the Thames, Judith witnesses a brutal murder. The local police don’t believe her story, so she decides to investigate for herself and is soon joined in her quest by Suzie, a salt-of-the-earth dog-walker, and Becks, the prim and proper wife of the local vicar.

Lovely cozy mystery
Revisado: 09-14-22
If what you’re looking for is a nice, cozy mystery, then this is the book for you. It’s nothing earth-shattering, but it’s a pleasant and enjoyable mystery with friendship building.

Notes ruin this
Revisado: 05-09-21
Rowling can’t help herself to explain where it wasn’t needed. These notes (premise of where they are and come from) are not aligned with the books. There are also contradictions between Dumbledores notes and what the actual story was in the books. I’m confused as why they were written. The stories themselves would’ve been so much better.

Super fun even without having read St. Mary’s
Revisado: 08-17-20
This is exactly what I needed. A fun, time-hopping book. Kind of a combo of Connie Willis and Jasper Fforde. You don’t really need to have read St. Mary’s series, but be warned-you’ll want to read it afterward. I am going to start on the (gulp) 11 books plus novellas now.

Historia
In her hit Netflix comedy special Baby Cobra, an eight-month pregnant Ali Wong resonated so strongly that she even became a popular Halloween costume. Wong told the world her remarkably unfiltered thoughts on marriage, sex, Asian culture, working women, and why you never see new mom comics on stage but you sure see plenty of new dads.

I love Ali Wong
Revisado: 11-03-19
Full disclosure: I love Ali Wong. She makes me laugh so hard that I literally cry.
This book was...really good. As letters go, sometimes the thread was lost or repeated. Some bit resonated more than others. Overall, I enjoyed myself and had a lot to think about.
The narration was good in that it was Ali and I didn’t have to imagine her delivery. But the thing about audiobooks is that you can’t have such wide differences in sound level. To go from yelling to whispering on stage is one thing as the audience is in one nonmoving venue and sound people can adjust. But in an audiobook thus means constantly fiddling with the volume to hear and then to not damage your ears.

Historia
When an experiment to study quantum uncertainty goes spectacularly wrong, physics student Bill Rustad and his friends find that they have accidentally created an inter-dimensional portal. They connect to Outland - an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. The group races to establish control of the portal before the government, the military, or evildoers can take it away. Then everything changes when the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts in an explosion large enough to destroy civilization and kill half the planet.

Dennis E Taylor? Narrated by Ray Porter? Take all of my money.
This book has the explicit references to Stargate and the similarities to the interesting bit of Long Earth. I loved it.

Too earnest?
Revisado: 02-14-19
I think I would’ve liked this a bit more in written form. The narrator seemed too earnest...or trying too hard to sound like a kid. I’m not sure exactly what it was, but it put me off of the story.
