Historia
A rogue Russian nuke sails toward the harbors of Los Angeles in the hull of a ramshackle sailboat. Without destroying a single building, the bomb shatters the latticework of the American dream, toppling one piece of the economy after another. A group of Special Forces veterans and their prepper friends scramble for survival in a worldwide catastrophe so psychologically disruptive they are left questioning everything they ever believed to be true.

Book is likley better than the Movie
Revisado: 12-21-24
I am going to see the opening of the movie "Homestead" today, which was taken from this book. I can't imagine the movie showing more than 1/4 to 1/3 of what is in the book. If you liked the movie, get the book!
The blackout series of books is written from a different person's perspective of the first 17 days of the "Blackout" event, so you can pick up any of the books in the series at any time.
I liked the gritty situations and decision the characters had to make followed by the consequences of said decisions.

Different type of post-apocalyptic Story
Revisado: 12-17-24
I enjoy the post-apocalyptic genera and after several stories of this type, they all start sounding the same. This one was different! This one, without all the intrigue, fighting, and discovery, the author puts together a compelling story that makes you want to continue listening. It grabs the post-apocalyptic genera by the nose and pulls it down a new trail.

Historia
A group of people evacuating ahead of civil unrest amid a societal collapse find themselves lost, alone, and on the run, deep in the woods of rural West Tennessee. With snow on the ground, no skills, and not much more than the clothes on their backs, the group is in dire straits and probably won't last the coming night. Until out of the falling snow, a lone figure approaches. Over the next few days their silent benefactor will keep them safe, fed, and warm while helping them acquire the know-how to care for themselves. The thing is, he's just a kid....

Fun little story
Revisado: 12-08-24
Reminded me a lot of the audio book "Odd Billy Todd", which I would also recommend. Story of a neighborhood that left after unspecified trouble after a apocalyptic event. The neighbors deal with different personalities and are saved by "the Kid". The kid is a little weird and quiet but without his help the neighbors would have died. The Narrator was easy to listen to but could have added a little more emotion. I'd recommend the book for a short listen,

Worth the money and worth the time
Revisado: 12-07-24
Well written and engaging post apocalyptic story of a 13 year old boy and his father over the course of five years as they build a community in South Africa after a virus wipes out 99% of the human population. The characters are well developed and I felt the situations were very plausible and realistic without being melodramatic. I really liked this book and listened to it again eight years later.

Interesting but long winded
Revisado: 12-04-24
Incredibly well researched, the author gives many insights to the inner workings of our government under stressful situations, what they plan for, and how the plans were successful and how they failed! Often long winded, but not boring enough to put down, the author goes over 70 years of continuity of government plans in case of nuclear war or other disasters with specific instances from the personalities we witnessed on the nightly news back in the day.

Theories of our apocalyptic archetypes
Revisado: 12-04-24
Too scholarly for me.
This was a challenging book to listen to because it was written at a college level. I needed a vocabulary earned with masters degrees in both Philosophy and Seminary, neither of which I have. Though my training was in Psychology, and I have enjoyed most of the media examined in the book, I felt like the author was too far ahead of me. I would compare it to reading later chapters of Stephan Hawkins “Brief History of Time”. I was able to understand the first couple chapters, but in later chapters I was lost.
“How to Survive the Apocalypse” is certainly a misnomer. A better title might be “Theories of our apocalyptic archetypes”.

Historia
When this best-selling autobiography was originally released, everyone was shocked: The Long Hard Road Out of Hell was the darkest, funniest, most controversial and best-selling rock book of its time - and it became the template, both visually and narratively, for almost every rock book since. Marilyn Manson is not just a music icon, it turned out, but one of the best storytellers of his generation.

Disturbing and Entertaining
Revisado: 12-04-24
Disturbing, entertaining though probably not entirely true.
I tried this book primarily because I like Neil Strauss’s writing. I’m not a Marlin Manson fan but I do like some of his music, I am entertained and drawn to his artistic flair, and because I enjoy rock biographies, I purchased the book and was not disappointed. The story was as you would expect, compelling, wild, grotesque, sad, twisted, surprising, pulling you through a range of emotions. It was often difficult to put down and I couple of times I couldn’t keep listening to it but had to stop and process what was said. I always anticipated continuing the story after pausing the recording.
I believe many of the accounts, especially towards the end, were censored and/or changed for personal, professional, and legal reasons. Still, it makes an incredible story.

While the world seems to be in love with the idea of tiny houses and minimalism, many of us simply can't purge it all and start from nothing. Yet a home with too much stuff is difficult to maintain, so where do we begin? Add in paralyzing emotional attachments and constant life challenges, and it can feel almost impossible to make real decluttering progress.

Revisado: 12-04-24
OMG I loved this book! I listened to it twice and I will listen to it a third time. I may even order a hard copy so I can highlight sections and contemplate on them to better apply them to my unique situation. The author is the Narrator so her vocal inflections are as she intended. She is funny, engaging, realistic, personable and makes listening to her book so very entertaining. If you live in clutter and you want to make a change, this book is a great place to start.

Historia
Some of the cruelest deeds of Japan's war in Asia did not occur on the battlefield, but in quiet, antiseptic medical wards in obscure parts of China. Far from front lines and prying eyes, Japanese doctors and their assistants subjected human guinea pigs to gruesome medical experiments in the name of science and Japan's wartime chemical and biological warfare research. Author Hal Gold draws upon a wealth of sources to construct a portrait of the Imperial Japanese Army's most notorious medical unit, giving an overview of its history and detailing its most shocking activities.

History will repeat
Revisado: 12-04-24
The book was written in two parts. The first part is an historical biography of Dr. Shirō Ishii who was the directory of Unit 731. He was the Japanese Dr. Josef Mengele. Ishii’s rise to his position and the creation of Unit 731 was well researched and described. The second part of the book is first-hand accounts of operations within Unit 731 of the horrific crimes against humanity and the reasoning behind the hideous atrocities forced on it’s victims.
The Narrator was rather dry but what should I have expected given this type of content?
I left with an understanding of why and how this happened, the effects of the crimes on both the victims, and the Japanese war criminals, why they were not prosecuted and why Unit 731 crimes were covered up.
I ended up seeing the wicked Japanese doctors of Unit 731 as humans, doing their jobs in service of their Emperor which is what they were taught and conditioned to do from an early age.
Worst of all, I can easily imagine this happening again. History repeats itself. :-(

Apex and Conclusion
Revisado: 11-24-24
The final book in the Powerless World series takes place mostly in the first year and concludes over five years. There were times I felt like the reader didn't portray the correct emotions. The author continued in the path of the the first two books imbuing pepper knowledge into the story line. (I learned some things about canning). I really appreciated the way the author didn't go to extremes but found a more realistic middle ground both with the many situations, and personalities.
I will likely listen to P.A. Glaspy's other series "Perilous Miles".
