Historia
For a thousand years, Doro has cultivated a small African village, carefully breeding its people in search of seemingly unattainable perfection. He survives through the centuries by stealing the bodies of others, a technique he has so thoroughly mastered that nothing on Earth can kill him. But when a gang of New World slavers destroys his village, ruining his grand experiment, Doro is forced to go west and begin anew. He meets Anyanwu, a centuries-old woman whose means of immortality are as kind as his are cruel. Now they begin a struggle that will last centuries.

amazing story

an amazing story... so perfect in too many ways to describe. there is a lack of fantasy that is steeped in the black experience. this is that and is a must read

too ambitious for 1 book
Revisado: 09-17-24
the same thing others said basically. it was very good, great world great frame grate stories told and a many good quickly covered... but due to it all being in 1 book, with so much complexity, it lacks. this could have should have been a series of books. generations and generations from opposing perspectives told from the view of characters that could be focused on from all perspectives... it would be such a great universe. an entire book pre zero. an entire book for zero, using the characters from the first book introducing children who could be primary character, background characters, or recent history for the stories during the white sky... there is room for 2 or 3 books in there. another on the rise of the cradle. The evolution on the known races. side books about diggers and pinger evolution (a forbidden digger love story perhaps, a first contact w destructive robots from pingers). a book about the development of red vs blue. part 3 then could should be one book... w more detail and character development focused on life in the ring and a more comprehensive experience in this time/space.
this would ease a lot of the info dump that happens throughout the book with so many new concepts that are critical to integration it's hard to be embedded into the universe as one finds themselves still trying to fully grasp the facts of the universe and their implications. the races, the whys and nature of them, and how that impacts their interactions. how races were classified when/if there are mixed races at all, and if so/not why or why not. there is just a lot of meat left in the pot by trying to force it all on one plate. it would be great if this was all reworked to create focused deep narratives that I could buy the entire collection of. this could would be a new classic. it has the potential to be a sci Fi lord of the rings.
in that it's sad as it has so much potential unrealized. but it is still a good story as is and a read I would, and have recommended.

horrible, but I finished
Revisado: 07-27-24
the fact that this has so many high ratings is more of a reflection of our society than to the book it's self. This is slow, cliche and predictable. this was a made for TV movie. a cheap Netflix movie w no name actors and poor production. any SyFy channel movie that plays late on a Saturday night when people are supposed to be out and not watching TV. there is the extra nib of ick due to the Britishness of it all. There is so much to not like about this book it makes me sad.
if you are looking for genetic sound, this is a perfect story. no surprises, the "plot twists" are the same plot twist of every storys plot twist. characters are clone copies from other stories. outcomes are reliable to be what they always are in these stories. and the depth is to be just enough to wet the bottoms of ones literary feet... perfect for those who struggle with nuance, depth, and comprehension. this book will require none of those appetites.

Historia
When Margaret and her husband Hal bought the large Victorian house on Hawthorn Street—for sale at a surprisingly reasonable price—they couldn’t believe they finally had a home of their own. Then they discovered the hauntings. Every September, the walls drip blood. The ghosts of former inhabitants appear, and all of them are terrified of something that lurks in the basement. Most people would flee. Margaret is not most people. Margaret is staying.

actually kind of creepy good story
Revisado: 04-24-24
I really liked this as a horror story. only slight complaint is the narrative framing in which all male characters are bad or incompetent. men don't have to be central, but I push back that every male is some flavor of bad.

Historia
Set in present-day Los Angeles, Junk explores an epic conspiracy, one at work for thousands of years that involves total takeover of the planet Earth by aliens. In the wild, souped-up vision of Les Bohem - the acclaimed, Emmy-winning writer of the Steven Spielberg miniseries, Taken - the world is at the end stage of long-range plot that involves a gigantic genetic-engineering project. The aliens who have invaded us have no planet. No spaceship is coming. Instead, a small advance force comes, breeds, and dies - thus becoming an anomaly in our DNA that can’t be explained.

it's not only me
Revisado: 06-28-23
so, I did not read other reviews before reading this as I think they can dissuade me from books and I was in no place to be dissuaded...
I TELL YOU... BE DISSUADED!!!
there is a review thats titled "appropriately named" (clever title for the review). And it's a perfect review. Just like that individual I'm not sure how, or why I finished this book. I do remember when I cut it off preferring silence and started thinking of my next selection. but somehow this book was played again somehow.
If your older than 14 and have any kind of taste or brain this book is not for you. while I said others have said likewise, you may be reading this and saying "ok but why!?" (I hate when ppl dog something but don't get specific). so at risk of being redundant to others:
it's cliche, disjointed, corny... the dialogue is written like a young adolescent imagining how adults speak... u know curses all over the place but somehow all out of place. like someone who is just learning to curse. "oooh I can say SH*T now!"
the only redeeming thing about the book is the original concept... the core concept of genetic level invasion across time rather than an immediate space invasion. but after that it falls apart. with lonf preachy corny lengths of words. events without reason. consistent trash references continuously nodding to the title (corny). oursi of the basic idea there is so much wrong with this book.
TLDR: book is horrible don't spend a credit on it... or money... or time (if it's free)... DO NOT BUT

Historia
A thrilling and revelatory narrative of one of the most epic and consequential periods in 20th century history - the Arab Revolt and the secret “great game” to control the Middle East. Lawrence in Arabia definitively overturns received wisdom on how the modern Middle East was formed. Sweeping in its action, keen in its portraiture, acid in its condemnation of the destruction wrought by European colonial plots, this is a book that brilliantly captures the way in which the folly of the past creates the anguish of the present.

"On Yale and Lawrence: a history of modern Israel"
Revisado: 06-20-23
It's more about Yale and the foundation of Israel than about Lawrence. It should have been called "of Yale and Lawrence". the meandering way the narrator talks about things that to me felt irrelevant made it hard to listen to and really follow. I will say in the few sections that do talk about Lawrence, it does add some color and context to his own narrative from 7 Pillars. But I am confident that there is probably another version of his biography that's focuses more on the character in question and not pages fluffer fulled with every other story besides the one the reader is most interested in... the title character Lawrence of Arabia.

Historia
Hester Thursby has given up using her research skills to trace people who don't want to be found. A traumatic case a few months ago unearthed a string of violent crimes, and left Hester riddled with self-doubt and guilt. Caring for a four-year-old is responsibility enough in a world filled with terrors Hester never could have imagined before. Finisterre Island, off the coast of Maine, is ruggedly beautiful and remote - the kind of place tourists love to visit, though rarely for long. But not everyone who comes to the island is welcome.

he just hates Churchill
Revisado: 09-26-21
The author is a passive racist (the author probably doesn't know it). He hates Churchill (who is also a racist... but who historically was a hero against Hitler)... and Hitler?... yeah he wasn't great... he did bad things... but he wasn't THAT bad. if the west would have left him alone, things would have been fine.
not a great read. but full if interesting facts/details and an interesting perspective.
