Emotional rollercoaster in a good way
Revisado: 04-24-25
This book took me on a complete emotional rollercoaster—anger, sadness, frustration, happiness, guilt, surprise… all of it. I was so angry at how people treated her when she came home, and even more upset that her own parents lied to their friends about where she’d been. How do you just erase someone’s service like that? I was furious at all the people who brushed her off, who told her she was never even in Vietnam. The denial, the gaslighting—it was just infuriating.
It was frustrating watching her keep going back to a married man who clearly didn’t deserve her—he kept lying and playing with her emotions. The sadness really hit me when it came to her relationship with her mom, especially early on. Honestly, it reminded me a lot of my own relationship with my mother. That distance, that lack of understanding—it felt so familiar. But I’m really glad to see how their relationship evolved over time.
One of the absolute highlights for me was her friendships with Barb and Ethel. They were incredible—loyal, grounded, and fiercely supportive. Any time she was in crisis, they showed up without hesitation. They helped her back on her feet more than once. And when she needed space, they gave it to her without guilt or pressure. That kind of friendship is rare and beautiful, and honestly, it moved me just as much as any other part of her story.
I can’t begin to imagine the pain she went through, the PTSD, the trauma. It’s heartbreaking to think about.
I honestly couldn’t put this book down. Every sentence, every paragraph pulled me in deeper. I just kept wanting more. This story really stuck with me—and probably will for a long time.

Wonderful
Revisado: 08-10-18
I must say that I wish I had this book in paperback because I would have loved highlight things she spoke about. Anyways, this book was fantastic. I’ve been dealing with the unexpected loss of my mother this past year and this book has really opened my eyes. It has taught me that I am worth it, that I don’t have to be like everyone else or look like everyone else. I am my own person. I can get through this.

It was good
Revisado: 09-26-16
I liked the overall book. I did not like the fact that he wrote more about the past then his current life and illness. I would have loved to hear more about his wife and daughter and how they were all doing. Not so much bout his internship and residency.

I saw this book at the bookstore a few months ago and I added it to my wish list. Then I saw that it was on a daily deal so I decided to download it. I never knew any book that could be so moving. This has got to be the most heart wrenching book I have ever listen to. After each chapter and every single person spoke I was so afraid to listen to was going to happen next. Such great writing style

Perry. This one is so heart warming and so touching I couldn't stop listening. I nearly cried when it was over. Will be reading even more by him soon
