Historia
Buried in debt due to his young daughter’s illness, his marriage at the brink, Mario reluctantly takes a job as a hitman, surprising himself with his proclivity for violence. After tragedy destroys the life he knew, Mario agrees to one final job: Hijack a cartel’s cash shipment before it reaches Mexico. Along with an old friend and a cartel-insider named Juanca, Mario sets off on the near-suicidal mission, which will leave him with either a cool $200,000 or a bullet in the skull. But the path to reward or ruin is never as straight as it seems.

Embarrassingly bad
Revisado: 12-15-22
Don’t really even know what to say — I don’t like leaving bad reviews but this is exceptionally bad. I loved the premise/general idea of the book but nothing in the story feels even remotely real, everything about the story/characters feels forced (especially the “dark” stuff) and like something a teenager would come up with a creative writing class. Don’t understand how this book is taken seriously by anyone. Want a good narco novel? Go read “Don’t Send Flowers”

On par with Northwater

If you liked the North Water you’ll like this. If you don’t enjoy this book you’re likely a boring and/uninteresting person.

Historia
Lou - a lapsed novelist and UFO enthusiast who has returned to his home state of Mississippi after decades away - drives for a ramshackle taxi company that operates on the outskirts of a college town among the trailer parks and housing projects. With Lou’s way of life fast vanishing, an ex-dispatcher returns to town on the lam, triggering a bedlam shift that will test Lou’s sanity and perhaps cost him his life. Against this backdrop, Lou has to keep driving and driving - even if that means aiding and abetting the host of criminal misfits haunting the back seat of his Town Car.

I loved this book
Revisado: 03-13-20
I never leave reviews but really loved this book and having driven a cab all through college I can tell you that the author was a really taxi driver and everything in the book - including all the characters - ring true. This book also does a great job of capturing the humanity and absurdity in all of us and is often laugh out loud funny. I hope Lee puts something else out again soon.

Optional? or required?

I loved this book. There's nothing Earth shattering about it but it's the type of book you can get sucked into no matter what where you are in it - there's no typical arch with climaxes and build-up/decline. You can come and go in the world as you please and it's anice change of pace from so many books.

Historia
In this “miracle of literary serendipity” (The Washington Post), after finding himself deep in the thrall of heroin addiction, the soldier arrives at what seems like the only logical solution: robbing banks. Written by a singularly talented, wildly imaginative debut novelist, Cherry is a bracingly funny and unexpectedly tender work of fiction straight from the dark heart of America.

a punch in the gut
Revisado: 09-13-18
difficult at times to listen to but always riveting. impressed with the tone/voice of novel throughout and even without the pr backstory of the author it's a pretty impressive debut novel. the fact he wrote it from jail after experiencing everything he did makes it all the more impressive.

Historia
Rice Moore is just beginning to think his troubles are behind him. He’s found a job protecting a remote forest preserve in Virginian Appalachia where his main responsibilities include tracking wildlife and refurbishing cabins. It’s hard work, and totally solitary - perfect to hide away from the Mexican drug cartels he betrayed back in Arizona. But when Rice finds the carcass of a bear killed on the grounds, the quiet solitude he’s so desperately sought is suddenly at risk.

Good premise and writing but ultimately a bore
Revisado: 06-25-18
I liked the idea of the book and even enjoyed the writing in much of it. But the devil's in the details and a lot of the characters and plot points were flat and somewhat unbelievable. I found a lot of it paradoxically outlandish but boring. I wish a lot of the story was more simple and straight-forward. His sabbatical in the forest was confusing and unnessary as was a lot of the backstory re: the cartel. It's difficult to pinpoint exactly why a book does or doesn't work, but I can say with confidence much of this book does not work.
