Young Life Divided but Slowly Zips Together Beautifully!!!
Revisado: 01-09-25
I loved Anais’s story. So honest and beautifully written. What I do not understand is why Black women’s stories are so brutally performed. I am a 60 year old Black woman and I have never heard a Black woman who speaks this way in real life. So often the accents used to voice Black women’s work’s on this platform are so saccharine and inauthentic. And, this performance is so choppy, it is as if she is reading this for the first time. I think really does a disservice to Black writer’s work. Do better. Please stick with Robin Miles!!!

"Have to keep that smile", said Booker Wright in the 1966 NBC documentary Mississippi: A Self-Portrait. At the time Wright was a waiter in a Whites-only restaurant and a local business owner who would become an unwitting icon of the civil rights movement. For he did the unthinkable: Before a national audience, he described what life was truly like for the Black people of Greenwood, Mississippi.

A Must Read For All Americans
Revisado: 09-25-24
This is such a beautifully written tribute to Yvette Johnson’s grandfather who remained an inspiration to many despite navigating unabashed soul crushing racial hatred. The author weaves the lives of three generations of her family through the epicenter of civil rights intolerance of Greenwood MS and how the inhumane treatment of blacks has left a catastrophic impact on its black population for generations.

Wow…as student of WWII I was fascinated by that aspect of the story!!
Revisado: 09-21-24
This was such a well written book that I happened to stumble upon because I was looking for titles narrated by Robin Miles. She is superb as usual. There were so many themes in this book as it followed first Harlan’s parent’s live’s then Harlan’s life thru some dazzling times in black culture and a very dark time in history. Love and friendship tethered the characters during times of devastating loss and mental health crisis. Relations between blacks and Jews during that time were also featured in story that goes full circle of a man’s life.

Historia
As the only African-American soloist dancing with the prestigious American Ballet Theatre, Misty Copeland has made history. But when she first placed her hands on the barre at an after-school community center, no one expected the undersized, anxious 13-year-old to become a groundbreaking ballerina. Life in Motion is a story of passion and grace for anyone who has dared to dream of a different life.

Beautiful story. Beautiful life. Absolutely the worst most uncomplimentary narration I’ve heard on Audible. The narrator says autistic instead of artistic. Why would you ruin her book with this narrator? Did anyone listen to it?

Historia
Long before Tameka Foster Raymond was known for her high-profile marriage and drama-fueled divorce, she lived a vibrant life as a self-made success in the fashion world, curating the wardrobes and images of many of today’s award-winning entertainers. In this honest, sincere, witty, and at times gut-wrenching memoir, Tameka opens up about her childhood influences, coming of age in Oakland, and losing her first love without losing her decorum, dignity, or her ability to dream.

Phenomenal Book by a Phenomenal Woman!!
Revisado: 06-06-24
I loved this beautifully written memoir where Tameka, through her authentic and erudite voice, shared of an intense bond in a high profile marriage, unrelenting public scrutiny, betrayal, unspeakable tragedy, forgiveness, healing, enlightenment, and renewed purpose. A truly inspirational read.
Their love was transformative and embodied the kind of profound partnership that many dream of but few experience. While both fully committed to maintain that bond, it seemed the entire universe had other plans. Seemingly, no one of any relevance to the marriage supported it. They screamed it from the modern day rooftops right into every computer screen hooked up to the Internet.
I listen to the book on audible and it was abridged with sound effects and music and a little of Tamika’s singing voice as she weaves us through the story of her life at times humorously and at others poignantly.
I have always been team Tameka and rooted for her from afar and I still do.
I don’t know either Tameka or Usher or anyone who knows them. I have always thought she was incredibly beautiful. And, yes for me, her complexion does factor into that equation because she has amazingly flawless skin.
When I learned she was being vilified for being a single mother, being older than Usher, and for having (beautiful) brown skin — by black people, I was disgusted. I hate she had to endure this senseless cruelty. Was Usher not raised by a single brown skinned mother? So for many of us, our minds are still so tightly bound to white supremacy that we believe this stunningly beautiful woman - inside and out is not worthy of this man because of her complexion?? I would suggest anyone who believes that is in need of self reflection and help because that is a serious symptom of self-hatred.
Sadly, not only did the marriage not survive the World Wide Web of commentary, but Tameka experienced the worst betrayal, a mother or any parent can experience. That is, to be falsely accused of being an unfit parent. Then tragedy really struck.
In such a short period of time, Tameka suffered so much loss. Through family members passing, relationships ending, career shifts, and relocations. She went through these life changing events with grace, dignity, and honor. She refused to use the same dirty tactics (against advise of counsel) that were used against her in court, which probably cost her custody of her children. She took the highroad which just shows you who she is as a person. This is a character driven and principled woman.
At this point, Tameka realized she was on this under-flipping inversion, sidewinding rollercoaster called life, alone. With nowhere else to turn, she leaned into faith. Spending time in nature, talking to G-d and meditating, she found peace, forgiveness, and purpose. She has tapped into her spirituality and creativity while on a mission to honor someone very special (you have to read/listen to the book to find out who) with more wonderful books - on sale now. I cannot wait for mine to arrive.

This POV a First For Me
Revisado: 12-27-23
I could not finish this book sadly. The narrator’s accent was so off putting. She ruined it for me. I don’t know why someone would choose a narrator who has an accent that makes them sound uneducated. It sounds as if she is reading the material, but she is someone who struggles with reading. I know it’s a Chicago area accent but it just not palatable for a performance of any kind.
