Much of this book was nerve wracking to me, although granted I don’t have much of a stomach for suspense. Nonetheless, definitely worth the read. The narration was superb. However , even so, it was difficult to keep the Russian names and characters straight without seeing them in print. An enduring classic.

I feel I grew to know Thomas Cromwell well through this book. At least the character presented as TC. I spent a lot of time invested in listening, but it was worth it. I grieved through much of the book, knowing what the final end would be. I had grown very fond of TC although there were many things about his character that I disagreed with, He was a redeemable character. His end is heartbreaking due to the psychotic nature of King Henry VIII. I know much of the story was speculative, but what a fascinating glimpse into history nonetheless.

The narrator was spot on. I did have to adjust the speed down to 90% as I listen slow and he speaks fast. This is my first Dorothy Sayers book but won’t be my last. Some may call her style outdated. I call it the way things should be.

Usually, I don’t care for religious books of fiction. However, I found this book to be deeply moving. The historical accuracy of life in the Roman Empire brought the secular facts of the early Christian Church alive.
The narrator was excellent. My only complaint was that there were no pauses between scenes and settings, making it difficult to realize when the time frame had jumped to a different setting.
I don’t often rate a book a 5, but this book is deserving of the designation. I highly recommend.

Predictable chick, flick book. If I had known, I would have saved my credit and waited for it to become available in the library.

I have loved everything I have read by Anya Seton and this book is no exception. The pleasant and palatable combination of history and fiction and the peripeteia of the plot, make this a winner.

Stories of espionage are not typically my cup of tea. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this thriller and highly recommend it.

I enjoyed this book for the insight it provided regarding fourteenth century Norway. The descriptions of the geography and scenery were exceptional. The role of the church as the center of society, especially before the reformation was also interesting. Another aspect I appreciated was the constancy of human nature across time and culture.

The story is bittersweet with a lot of sadness and struggle throughout which left me feeling almost depressed at times. Kristen had an ordinary life in many ways but the fairy tale endings I hoped for at different turns in the story were never realized. I guess you could call it reality therapy.

The narrator was very good. Although somewhat monotone at times, I’m not sure another narrator could have exceeded her performance.

I actually returned this book early on as I was disappointed by the way the family stories were fragmented with hundreds of years in between. However I decided to give it another chance and repurchased it. I’m glad I did. Once you get accustomed to the format, it is an interesting and worthy read.

The storyline was different, unexpected, with interesting twists and turns. Although sad at times, the end was very satisfying. And the narration was excellent as well. I highly recommend.
