Stunning, just stunning
Revisado: 04-14-25
Where do I even begin! The tale is one for the generations, a spectacular modern epic that has at last met my expectations and gusted past them in a whirlwind of expert storytelling.
Fantasy, magic, Arthurian Knights equipped with god hewn swords, intrigue, mystery and the familiar pitch of destiny's lore...it has it all!
Fantastic!

With his talent for divining the future, Alex Verus should have foreseen his friends' reactions to the revelations about his previous life. Anne Walker no longer trusts him-and has also cut all ties with the mage community after getting kicked out of the apprentice program. As a favor to Luna, Alex's own apprentice and Anne's best friend, he checks in on her only to be told to leave her alone. Then Anne gets kidnapped.

This time last year, I could go weeks without seeing another mage. In mage society I was an unknown and, all in all, that was how I liked it. It’s hard to say what changed. Whatever it was, I got involved in the magical world again and started getting myself a reputation.

Put entertainment and literary fun! I've read all the Sherlock Holmes novels and am a for hard fan of the genre. Benedict Jaca has created a series akin to Sherlock but infused with modern day magic. Such a blast! and the narrator is top notch

Just too good!
Revisado: 02-04-25
In the short story, meets weekend mini-series style of Sherlock Holmes, this book, as well as it's predecessor immediately whisked me away in a rapture of intriguing characters, dazzling plot entanglements, creative vocabulary and the kind of mystery and magic that only London could play host to.
Combine all of that with narration that I could listen to endlessly and you have the perfect melody of spell binding entertainment.

Alex Verus is part of a world hidden in plain sight, running a magic shop in London. And while Alex's own powers aren't as showy as some mages, he does have the advantage of foreseeing the possible future-allowing him to pull off operations that have a million-to-one-chance of success. But when Alex is approached by multiple factions to crack open a relic from a long-ago mage war, he knows that whatever's inside must be beyond powerful.

Revisado: 01-03-25
I've read fantasy books galore. From LOTR to The Name of The Wind and hundreds more. And The Mistborn series ranks among the highest.
The storyline is sophisticated, intriguing, thought provoking and captivating, mixing the perfect cocktail of adventure, mystery, romance and vibrant battle scenes. And with character development, dialogue and vernacular that all combine into a veritable world of creativity, you will be left in breathless satisfaction.

Helen Castor tells afresh the gripping story of the peasant girl from Domremy who hears voices from God, leads the French army to victory, is burned at the stake for heresy, and eventually becomes a saint. But unlike the traditional narrative, a story already shaped by the knowledge of what Joan would become and told in hindsight, Castor's Joan of Arc: A History takes us back to 15th century France and tells the story forwards.

A good freshman effort...
Revisado: 05-15-24
Like a puppy with feet too big for its unwieldy efforts, Brian Staveley has taken on a story, an idea that has epic possibilities but this being his first step onto the escarpment of published books, he has failed to meet the full potential promised in the pages.
Still, he has done enough, roped me in sufficiently, fueled my curiosity to the point that I will continue down the trilogy trail and see not only where the story ends but where the skill of the author concludes.
Finally, the performance was good but lacked the intricate perfection of and creative breath of Tim Gerard Reynolds.

Excellent production of a classic work
Revisado: 04-30-24
To call B.F. Skinner polarizing is like referring to the sun as hot- a true but woefully inadequate description.
Is it possible to go from vehemently nodding your head in agreement one moment, to the next shaking your head in irritated objection, only to find the next moment you are shrugging your shoulders in deep deliberation of how you really feel?
Yes, it is. That is the kind of ride B.F. Skinner takes you on and while it is not easy, it is productive and useful for opening the understanding to a nuisanced view of human nature. I recommend suspending your axioms, and taking in the book for what it is, the life's work of a rebel with a cause.
And the quality of narration and production was superb, with intonations, emphasis and tone adeptly implemented to support and bring to life the text, rather than overshadow it.

The Highest praise!
Revisado: 03-31-24
I have now read 7 of Michael J Sullivan's books and have been happily impressed by all. Of the 7, 4 have been stellar, 2 mediocre and 1 has been a whole new level of Greatness. This is that one.
I am a fan of fantasy from Tolkien and Lewis to modern day phenoms and I tell you that with this book, Michael J Sullivan has entered the exclusive pantheon of literary masters.
I will offer no synopsis, no clues to the special ingredients which makes this read so otherworldly. I say only this, read it and read it now. Whatever else you may be reading or contemplating reading, discard, and instead steel your heart, encourage your imagination and wander into a world of emotion and delight that you will not soon forget.
As always, the inimitable Tim Gerard Reynolds proves the unflappable icon of high literary narration and the absolute paragon of oration.
