Historia
Bordeaux, 1367. Having angered the bloodthirsty Don Pedro, King of Castile, Sir Thomas Blackstone is thoroughly sick of his mission for the Prince of Wales, but must remain true to his oath. But this is the Hundred Years' War, and tensions are rising once more. With the Prince of Wales deeply unpopular in his Aquitanian lands, Blackstone, King Edward's Master of War, must return to French soil to help stem the tide of support for the King of France.

Enraptured
Revisado: 08-25-24
As I impatiently await book 9, I am on repeat with previous volumes; I cannot quit these living, breathing, bleeding, stinking, chivalric heroes of the 14th century! Yes, you smell them, laugh with the bawdy humor, feel the weight of the sword, and put the broken pieces of your heart back together at the end of particular chapters. The writer and performer superbly convey the emotion of the moment. The rich detail of life in the time, and specific characters and events, transports the reader into Blackstone's world, and invests him in the outcome.

Gripping
Revisado: 07-20-24
The author was superb in the transfer of emotion. I am drawn to historical fiction for this, and more importantly, the indefatigable human spirit. The unimaginable horrors endured by black people in this era of slavery can be a lot to even listen to, but the courage at all costs, the commitment to community, the strength of character and spirit shines brightly in this book. This window into the life of a single, free, black woman with a home, and land, illustrated that anxiety and fear were ever-present, and helping others was worth losing all.

Thrills Tie it All Together
Revisado: 07-03-24
Suspenseful, garnished with a few twists. I really enjoyed the fights, and that there was fallibility; some realism thrown into the fantastic.

Historia
1867, Richmond, Virginia: Though she wears the same low-cut purple gown that is the uniform of all the girls who work at Worsham's gambling parlor, Arabella stands apart. It's not merely her statuesque beauty and practiced charm. Even at seventeen, Arabella possesses an unyielding grit, and a resolve to escape her background of struggle and poverty. Collis Huntington, railroad baron and self-made multimillionaire, is drawn to Arabella from their first meeting. Collis is married and 30 years her senior, yet they are well-matched in temperament, and flirtation rapidly escalates into an affair.

Loved how the author painted the picture; really brought the story to life with the verbal imagery. Voice was excellent, too, so pleasurable listening.

Historia
A well-researched historical setting provides the background against which the personal challenges and tragedies of the Graham Saga are set. In this book, we return to a Maryland presently torn apart by religious conflict - the hitherto so tolerant approach to various faiths is a thing of the past now that the staunchly Protestant William and Mary sit on the throne, and when Catholic friends of the Grahams end up in danger, Matthew and Alex must ride to the rescue.

GRIPPING tale from start to finish! I don't want this to end. The reader can really feel the intense pain, anger, fear and utter joy of the characters; a true range of emotion! Loved it, and aching for more!

Historia
This is the memoir written by Bella Kuligowska Zucker, the only person in her family to survive the Holocaust. In September 1939, Bella was a carefree teenager living in Poland when the German army struck. She was rounded up with her friends and family and sent to a series of grim Jewish ghettos. After loved ones were separated and lost through the war years, Bella survived by changing her identity. After finding the birth certificate of a Catholic girl five years her senior, she became Sabina Mazurek. Then she went into the eye of the storm, Germany.

Strength and Spirit and Family
Revisado: 06-05-24
Every time I experience survival stories of WWII, I am amazed by the endurance of people. Love of others is almost always the driver, and the volume of tales only increases my astonishment because they aren't exceedingly rare, yet each is incredibly phenomenal. I was moved once again by the will to live, bravery in the face of evil, ingenuity, and the love of family and strangers alike. Thank you for sharing!

Truth of Difficult Situation
Revisado: 04-08-24
The story is unique in many ways, but I don't want to give much away. I had surprises regarding the aftermath of the war, honesty in the day to day tension of hiding people, the extreme starvation, though I knew of all of these.
It is interesting, too, that the story is not told in first person. I think it helped advance the more mundane, and truth, of existing in occupied Europe at the time.
I would love to hear this same story in her mother's voice: the gripping accounts of danger at every turn, how she managed the fear, the relationships, shame, exhaustion, starvation, love and loss. I realize there would be some license, but a fascinating juxtaposition to this account.

A Window Into the Bravest Souls
Revisado: 01-24-23
Knowing historical facts, I always question the how and why, and mist importantly motivation for people who chose to risk everything in WWII. I found this tale very insightful, believable and full of the spirit of those among the bravest to have walked this Earth.
