Historia
Edward Lincoln is a worldwide celebrity who plays impossibly daring detectives on the big screen. But in reality he is an ordinary man currently stuck in an extraordinary spot. Nerissa, his ailing godmother, had pleaded with him to travel to South Africa to investigate whether someone was tampering with her racehorses. He could not refuse her.

Revisado: 12-03-24
I usually love Dick Francis but his evasion of the political situation in South Africa is repugnant.

I plowed through this and The Searcher hoping to find the brilliance of Tana French’s Dublin novels. To no avail.

A brilliant debut novel, at once teasing literary thriller and a darkly comic blend of history and invention, The Torqued Man is set in wartime Berlin and propelled by two very different but equally mesmerizing voices: a German spy handler and his Irish secret agent, neither of whom are quite what they seem.

Fun story embedded in great historical detail
Revisado: 03-18-24
Very good WW2 historical context, colorful characters, suspenseful plot. The dual manuscript not so mysterious but it works. Narration awkward at first—German than Irish—but one gets used to it.

Historia
For all the literature about Adolf Hitler, there have been just four seminal biographies; this is the fifth, a landmark work that sheds important new light on Hitler himself. Drawing on previously unseen papers and a wealth of recent scholarly research, Volker Ullrich reveals the man behind the public persona, from Hitler's childhood, to his failures as a young man in Vienna, to his experiences during the First World War, to his rise as a far-right party leader.

Adds a lot
Revisado: 01-30-24
While I learned a lot about the Nazi dictatorship from Kershaw’s biography, it couldn’t explain Hitler’s personal power. This study rectifies, by giving Hitler more credit both as an actor and for intellect (memory). However, both are so eager to avoid psychohistory they are incapable of addressing their subject’s megalomania, paranoia, obsessiveness and criminality (antisocial), even as they use these terms loosely as they go. At least this study explains better why Hitler was politically potent. Both books teach a lot about the Third Reich generally, with Ullrich having access to latest sources but Kershaw more interpretive, theoretical.

Historia
By 1939, Anglo-American journalist John Russell has spent over a decade in Berlin, where his son lives with his mother. He writes human-interest pieces for British and American papers, avoiding the investigative journalism that could get him deported. But as World War II approaches, he faces having to leave his son as well as his girlfriend of several years, a beautiful German starlet. When an acquaintance from his old communist days approaches him to do some work for the Soviets, Russell is reluctant, but he is unable to resist the offer.

Atmospheric, subtle work of WW2 fiction
Revisado: 10-21-23
The author, narrator and characters took awhile to grab me, but I appreciated the pace and subtlety of what was being orchestrated and am happy I stuck with it. Beautiful historical detail and believable human dilemmas and suspense. More for those who seek time travel to this dramatic enough historical period than for those looking for action and mayhem.

Historia
Crime reporter Eve Singer's career is on the downward slope when a spate of bizarre murders - each carefully orchestrated and advertised like performance art - begin in her territory. Covering these very public crimes revives her byline, and when the killer contacts Eve to discuss her coverage of his crimes, she is suddenly on the inside of the biggest murder investigation of the decade. But as the killer becomes increasingly obsessed with her, Eve realizes there's a thin line between inside information and becoming an accomplice to murder.

Well crafted characters, contexts in WW2 story
Revisado: 06-03-23
Another humane, compelling story by this author who defies stereotypes of what a WW2 “spy novel” should be. The narrator does a good job, never interfering and capturing mood well. The story seems to sag in the middle but the end was worth staying for. I really enjoyed the Polish context for this novel.

Historia
When the famous German author Sebastian Haffner died at the age of 91 in 1999, a manuscript was discovered among his unpublished papers. The book was begun in 1939, but with the advent of World War II, Haffner had set it aside. His family made the decision to publish it, and the book became a best seller in Germany in 2002. Spanning the period from 1907 to 1933, it offers a unique perspective on how the average educated German grappled with the rise of Hitler.

This searching recollection of growing into adulthood in Nazi Germany not only helps the reader understand this horrific historical moment, but also uncomfortably makes the reader reflect on how she or he would do in such circumstances…now.

A tremendous amount of material is covered with confidence and clarity. My only gripe is that he didn’t adequately explain the success and collapse of the Left, especially Spain and Germany, due to apparent disdain for socialism.
