Historia
Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters.

A slow burn
Revisado: 12-05-24
The only reason this book didn't get five stars from me was because it took a little bit to warm up. The beginning was very slow and I was becoming disappointed in a book from my favorite author. I didn't really care for the characters in the beginning, it took a long time to get to the meat of the story, but when it did... oh boy! By the end of the book I couldn't put it down and I was sobbing. The ending of this book was more than I could have hoped.

Historia
Nestled in the mountain shadows of Alabama lies the little town of Wicklow. It is here that Anna Kate has returned to bury her beloved Granny Zee, owner of the Blackbird Café. It was supposed to be a quick trip to close the café and settle her grandmother’s estate, but despite her best intentions to avoid forming ties or even getting to know her father’s side of the family, Anna Kate finds herself inexplicably drawn to the quirky Southern town her mother ran away from so many years ago, and the mysterious blackbird pie everybody can’t stop talking about.

lost interest halfway through
Revisado: 05-11-24
The premise of this book sounded promising. but it never fully developed into what I had expected the book to be. there was a element of the supernatural but not enough to make it supernatural. The characters were likable and but the transformation of Celie wasn't believable. there wasn't enough conflict in the book to make it engaging enough to want to know what was going to happen next. I like a book that has good feelings and warm fuzzies but it would have been better if they were set off by a little more conflict

Historia
Lucy Sharpe is larger than life. Magnetic, addictive. Bold and dangerous. Especially for Margot, who meets Lucy at the end of their freshman year at a liberal arts college in South Carolina. Margot is the shy one, the careful one, always the sidekick and never the center of attention. But when Lucy singles her out at the end of the year, a year Margot spent studying and playing it safe, and asks her to room together, something in Margot can't say no—something daring, or starved, or maybe even envious.

I'm not sure if the twists at the end made up for the very drawn out set up.

Revisado: 02-27-24
This is one of those books that will stay with me. The pain, the loss, the healing, the love and the friendships are so real and poignant. Never, have I contemplated the plight of the women in Vietnam until now. I love to learn when I read, and this book not only taught me something, it inspired me. Please read it.

Disappointing
Revisado: 12-15-23
The one thing I can say about this book is that it kept me interested. I knew what seemed obvious in the beginning must be a distraction about what was really going on. But once the twist was revealed, I was disappointed. The characters in the book were hard to root for all around, but to have the worst ones win in the end was such a let down.

Lipstick. Bright, red lipstick. Nothing but lipstick. Even though it's against our faith to wear a color that screams of sexual promiscuity and deviant behavior, I'm not allowed to protest. But, I want to. So badly.

Revisado: 10-30-22
I guess I'm just not the audience for which this book was intended. I am fascinated with the FLDS and enjoyed the 19th wife and so I was expecting this to be similar. Turns out it's just a sexy romance set in an FLDS compund. I'm not a big fan of cheesy romance novels. I had to stop listening after a few too many explicit sexual situations. Gross. I returned this title.

Historia
Getting snowed in at a luxurious, rustic ski chalet high in the French Alps doesn’t sound like the worst problem in the world. Especially when there’s a breathtaking vista, a full-service chef and housekeeper, a cozy fire to keep you warm, and others to keep you company. Unless that company happens to be eight coworkers…each with something to gain, something to lose, and something to hide.

I really enjoyed listening to Imogene Church narrate this book as she has done others. I love the Agatha Christie quality of the story. This might be my favorite Ruth Ware book. Top three at least!

Long and not very exciting.
Revisado: 08-29-22
I love alnost everything I've read by Ruth Ware so, of course I was excited for the debut of her new novel. Sadly, it was a bit of a snore for me. It took ages to set up the story, and although the twist at the end was a bit surprising, it was overall a kind of dull read.

I can't really rate the story fairly because I could not get past the narration. It sounded computer-generated! no cadence or diction to the voice, very robotic. I will read not listen.
