Historia
For much of his life, historian Howard Zinn chronicled American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version taught in schools - with its emphasis on great men in high places - to focus on the street, the home, and the workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History of the United States is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of - and in the words of - America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers.

Worst choice I've ever made in an audiobook!
Revisado: 01-15-17
This was a grind to get through. It wasn't enjoyable at all, although I generally enjoy history. If return it, but that policy requires to the return within 365 days of purchase, and I didn't know about it in time. Instead I'm just going to delete it, because it pains me whenever I run across it in my library. I gave it one star in each category to ensure the ratings registered; I'd have put zero stars if I thought it would count.

When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education. On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive. Instead, Malala's miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York.

Great insight into the lives of normal Muslims
Revisado: 10-07-16
In the West, we almost always hear of extremist Islam and tend to associate that religion with international terrorism. In this book, which preserves the history of a remote valley in Pakistan from the perspective of an exceptional young lady who, along with two of her classmates, survived being shot in the head by the Taliban, Malala provides an inside view of the religion, showing us that there is also a human side to the religion, too, although in recent years the populace, which still has a conscience, has been violently suppressed by hypocrites that do not, yet claim to speak in its name.

At times dry; unparalleled information
Revisado: 09-28-16
This is a remarkable book for insight and information on the Islamic view of the West, and includes a lot of very engaging information, but it is a bit dry in places; strongly recommended for anyone with enough interest in the Middle East of or Muslims to weather the dry parts.

Well told, but with very inaccurate details
Revisado: 06-07-16
While this history is told in a very engaging manner, the matters of American History with which I am most familiar were told in a biased manner, apparently founded more on historic propoganda material than actual eyewitness accounts, with significant discrepancies in chronology and details from actual events.
The history of emancipation and suffrage are both highlighted, the early contributions of early marginalized groups were often overlooked entirely, let alone those positions' contribution to that marginalization.
I may not be an expert in American History, but when this history presents as fact such erroneous details as "John Brown's Body was set to the tune of Battle Hymn of the Republic" (it was the other way around: Battle Hymn of the Republic was inspired by John Brown's Body, which was in turn inspired by the revivalist hymn Say, Brothers) and Joseph Smith was lynched (he was shot, and that's just one of several inaccuracies in the brief overview of Mormonism), it's really hard to trust any other details presented.
Overall, I'm sure the narrative is fairly accurate, but this work is certainly not of sufficient scholastic merit to serve as an authoritative textbook on this subject. That being said, I suppose recognized inaccuracies can serve a purpose as well: I feel, after listening to this book, that I need to make a more in-depth study of American History in order to correct any other erroneous biases to which this story may have inadvertently introduced me.

Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

Not what I expected
Revisado: 05-29-16
It was hard to get going in this book, because it wasn't what I expected, but I feel like I've come away with a much better understanding of what language is. Performance I marked down a bit, probably more due to app issues: it was common for the audio to cut out and return after a brief pause, probably a buffering issue.

Historia
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

War Sci-Fi, written by a male...
Revisado: 07-28-15
I really enjoyed this Audiobook, but I am an avid, male, enlisted Sci-Fi fan. It contains more profanity than I tolerated before joining the service, and sexual encounters were alluded to in a distinctly male manner. Most male gamers will probably love it.

Insightful conclusion
Revisado: 07-03-15
Anthony takes on some hard topics in this book, and does a good job with them. I can't say that I agree with all his conclusions, but there is a lot of food for thought, and I don't read fiction for an accurate view of reality anyway, so it was quite entertaining.

Historia
Regarded as one of the brightest young scientists of his generation, Lewis Dartnell proposes that the key to preserving civilization in an apocalyptic scenario is to provide a quickstart guide, adapted to cataclysmic circumstances. The Knowledge describes many of the modern technologies we employ, but first it explains the fundamentals upon which they are built. The Knowledge is a brilliantly original guide to the fundamentals of science and how it built our modern world as well as a thought experiment about the very idea of scientific knowledge itself.

Excellently instructive
Revisado: 07-01-15
Provides a good theoretical background for understanding many technologies we overlook and take for granted in our everyday lives sufficiently that it could be reinvented more easily by experimentation were it to be lost, presented in order of necessity/utility to a recovering civilization, but also quite relevant to better understanding and appreciating our society's technological infrastructure.
