Historia
At the height of his fame and influence during World War II, Ernie Pyle’s nationally syndicated dispatches from combat zones shaped America’s understanding of what the war felt like to ordinary soldiers, as no writer’s work had before or has since. From North Africa to Sicily, from the beaches of Anzio to the beaches of Normandy, and on to the war in the Pacific, where he would meet his end, Ernie Pyle had a genius for connecting with his beloved dogfaced grunts. In The Soldier's Truth, acclaimed writer David Chrisinger brings Pyle’s journey to vivid life in all its heroism and pathos.

Story So Good It Survives Flat Perormance
Revisado: 11-04-23
Pyle and his story are both significant and important. Chrisinger’s flat affect and odd cadence in narration diminish the overall quality of the experience Thankfully, the story is of such high quality that it survives the curious indifference of the authors performance. Listening evokes an unsure public speaker at a lectern, eyes down, woodenly plodding through the prose as if the recording was a sound check.
Still - great book. Chrisinger may console himself, if not his Audible audience, with the undeniable claim that he is a first rate writer.

Historia
For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Eartha Kitt Reads Michael Lewis to Children
Revisado: 10-21-23
Lewis’ prose and narratives are infectiously good. This narration is the vaccine that inoculates the reader from their full effects.
A taught story told with a curious application of sly breathy tone, melodic lilt and meter (and, I imagine, an imperiously arched eyebrow).
Upsides for myself and for publisher:
1) Since forcing myself to listen to this book while running, my ETs are dropping precipitously.
2) This performance sold a Kindle copy.

Worth every penny, and not one more.
Revisado: 03-20-21
Are you, like me, old and disconnected? You will love this story! It's anything but nuanced, subtle as a sledge hammer, and takes zero effort to consume.
Plus, it's modern and hip, with happening buzzy words to hook in us Olds: DARK WEB! E-league! Blockchain! BITCOIN, Dawg! Bitcoin!!! Man I feel so cutting edge. Why are you still reading this review? I say get right into this shelf stable snack food of a story! Maybe in an Applebee’s parking lot. That would be a good match.
Get your margarine on!

Historia
As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined...until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing - and too earth-shattering in its implications - to be forgotten. In this audiobook, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it.

Horror Sounds Like the Voiceover for a Household Product Spot
Revisado: 07-10-20
Judy Greer’s performance was celestial.
It eclipsed the entire story.
If you need more grocery store/laundry soap/cleaning product advert style audio in your life, this hollow noise, this blank fired from the previously excellent cannon of Max Brooks, is a must for you.
Ideal for people who watch network tv for the ads.
Small-minded moment here: I won’t finish the audiobook, but I may buy the print edition and hope that the big reveal is that the Greer character died. Horribly.

Vincent Price himself couldn’t have saved this.
Revisado: 10-12-18
If you read just one story by Jonathan Maberry,
THIS SHOULD NOT BE THAT STORY.
Maberry’s stuff Is generally high concept fun. This was cliche and flat. Brick tries to pull it off with his slightly overwrought Vincent Price ghost story style evocation, but ... no. Nothing doing.
I read Maberry and so I know what I’m getting when I do- it’s not Houellebecq, for crying out loud it’s Maberry. But this was just tedious.
