October 1772, Portsmouth. Sixteen-year-old Richard Bolitho waits to join the Gorgon, ordered to sail to the west coast of Africa and to destroy those who challenge the King's Navy. For Bolitho, and for many of the crew, it is a severe and testing initiation into the game of seamanship.

Gotta Love the Bolitho tales.
Revisado: 12-04-24
Alexander Kent writes an engaging tale here. I’m continuously amazed at how some of these authors can weave so much character development into such intimate knowledge of the time periods they write about. Literally like being transported back in time.

It’s James SA Corey doing what those guys do!
Revisado: 09-07-24
These two are absolutely the best of the genre. Right up there with all the greats. If anyone ever tells you that sci-fi isn’t great literature, hand them a James SA Corey novel. Since this is an audio book immense credit must also go to the brilliance of Jefferson Mays narration. His pace and phrasing truly bring the author’s vision into view. Can’t enough good things about this book.

Historia
In this 24-lesson course aimed at non-scientists, noted particle physicist Dr. Don Lincoln of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory covers more than a century of progress in physics, describing exactly how scientists reach the conclusions they do. He starts with the atom, which was long hypothesized but wasn’t definitively proven until a paper by Albert Einstein in 1905. That was just the beginning, as researchers probed ever deeper into the atom’s complex structure, leading to the weird findings of quantum mechanics.

Revisado: 10-27-23
Dr. Lincoln is an excellent educator that is able to give the listener a clear picture of complex topics. How various discoveries built upon each other throughout the history of physics and cosmology. He’s presentation is accessible and eloquent. Just buy it. You’ll finally really grasp general relativity.

Historia
Nothing quite prepared telepath Larry Greenberg for mind-to-mind contact with an alien. In the interest of science, Larry tapped the mind of Kzanol - and that was his first mistake. Kzanol was a thrint from a distant galaxy. He had been trapped on Earth in a time-stasis field for two billion years. Now he was on the loose, and Larry knew everything he was thinking. Thrints lived to plunder and enslave lesser planets - and what the planet Kzanol had in mind was Earth!

Great podcast by knowledgeable author.
Revisado: 03-03-23
If you’re interested at all in Victorian era history and trivia this is the best listen you’ll get on the subject. The material is presented with restrained exuberance by an author that is clearly in love with his subject. You’ll learn so much from listening to this podcast.

Jehoshaphat!!!
Revisado: 02-24-23
Wow, what a writer this guy was. So many great minds came out of the twentieth century and Asimov can certainly be counted among them. The way he ties his work together is fantastic. But even more so what he has to say regarding the value of AI and the way to guard ourselves against its dangers through the robotic laws is quite profound. In Asimov’s world it is our ability to create AI, along with our foresight to guard against it’s possible dangers that is the very thing that ensures our survival. The entire concept of psycho-history being conceived of by a robot with telepathic abilities and then implanted into the mind of Dr. Fastolf is such an act of storytelling genius. Asimov not only ties together his life’s work but places his insight into human nature and his philosophy front and center. Tying it all together, decades of writing and thought into the final scene of the final chapter. He gives us a dire warning along with a hopeful direction based on the value of humanity which he so obviously holds dear. This work is a masterpiece.

Historia
Golan Trevize, former councilman of the First Foundation, has chosen the future, and it is Gaia. A superorganism, Gaia is a holistic planet with a common consciousness so intensely united that every dewdrop, every pebble, every being, can speak for all - and feel for all. It is a realm in which privacy is not only undesirable, it is incomprehensible. But is it the right choice for the destiny of mankind? While Trevize feels it is, that is not enough. He must know.

Where’s Scott Brick?!!
Revisado: 01-27-23
An absolute work of genius by one of the literary masters of Science Fiction. Should be required reading as many of society’s issues are presented with an elegant solution within the story. Story is fantastic. The narration is incredibly disappointing. Scott Brick has narrated all the other books in the series. Why not this one?? Get Scott Brick to do it!! Pay the guy whatever he wants. Amazon has the resources. This is Sci-Fi at its most important form. Fix this!!

Historia
After the Renegade mission by the crew of the starship Flying Dutchman, the UN Expeditionary Force thought Earth was safe for hundreds of years, at least. After there was trouble on the home front and the president had to authorize a nuclear strike on an American city, UNEF decided they did need the Merry Band of Pirates again. So, the Flying Dutchman is sent out on a simple recon mission. But for the pirates, nothing is ever simple, and their mission will become Armageddon.

Revisado: 11-30-22
The voice acting work is excellent. This guy is among the best. Character development takes a leap forward in this one. The stakes in the story escalate. I simply can’t stop listening to this story as the author makes you feel such a level of familiarity with the characters it’s like you’re there in the story with them.

Historia
United Nations Special Operations Command sent an elite expeditionary force of soldiers and pilots out on a simple recon mission, and somehow along the way they sparked an alien civil war. Now the not-at-all-merry band of pirates is in desperate trouble, again. Their stolen alien starship is falling apart, thousands of light years from home. The ancient alien AI they nicknamed Skippy is apparently dead, and even if they can by some miracle revive him, he might never be the same.

Fun!
Revisado: 10-29-22
This whole series is just a fun adventure romp through the galaxy. Great military sci-fi adventure. Characters are believable people that careen from one crisis to another. This author is an excellent writer that is deliberately writing a fun entertaining story. Please understand that this is not literature. It has nothing profound to offer. If you’re expecting something along the lines of Herbert, SA Corey, Gibson, etc, this isn’t it. It makes few statements other than displaying the moral compass of its characters. This story provides a necessary relief from today’s constant barrage of horrific news and societal discord. Make no mistake this guy is a masterful writer. His character development creates very believable people. So much so that you get the sense you’re in the room with them. Oh yeah and “Monkeys kick As_!”
