Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

One of the best books I’ve read in a long time
Revisado: 01-03-24
A contemporary classic. I found myself thinking about this while I wasn’t reading it. The writing is immersive and rich. I was lost in the tragic story of Demon, but also I was amused by the character’s natural goodness and humor. The narrator is fantastic.

Historia
Persephone is the Goddess of Spring by title only. The truth is, since she was a little girl, flowers have shriveled at her touch. After moving to New Athens, she hopes to lead an unassuming life disguised as a mortal journalist. Hades, God of the Dead, has built a gambling empire in the mortal world and his favorite bets are rumored to be impossible. After a chance encounter with Hades, Persephone finds herself in a contract with the God of the Dead and the terms are impossible: Persephone must create life in the Underworld or lose her freedom forever.

Clubbing College Woo Girls
Revisado: 11-19-23
Persephone is young and naive, and she is going to college. Understandably, after being locked away her whole life up until this point, she is super innocent and sheltered. I just can’t seem to be able to listen to the obnoxious “woo-girl clubbing OMG bubbly annoying” parts of the story with a straight face… The aspects of the story that are encouraging consent, solidarity, and feminism are very obvious and could have used better integration. I’m all for the inclusion of feminist ideas, but at times the dialogue around it or the actions felt really forced. I think maybe this is written for virginal or inexperienced young women that want some smut. I listened to it, it roped me in, but it’s a little “cringe”. I like Hades more than Persephone in this story. I don’t see how he would be interested in someone who is depicted as being a pretty normal idiot! I guess the fates are to blame. Anyways, might not be my thing.

Historia
As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don’t mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she’s used to being alone and she follows the rules...with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos "pretending" to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously.

Perhaps not my cup of tea…
Revisado: 11-18-23
This is certainly cozy and cute, but I found it to be a little boring. The writing is sound, but the story isn’t overly complex or interesting. I think this is probably more of a preference. It just seemed like the conflict and arc were so subtle the story seemed to drone on a little.
If you want something that reads like a warm cup of tea, continue. If you read more in the way of classic fantasy, this may not have enough tension for you. I liked the narrator.

Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Foreshadowing and twists and turns
Revisado: 11-14-23
This book had a good mixture of fulfillment of foreshadowing as well as unexpected twists and turns. I liked that I guessed at certain things, but other things surprised me. The more juvenile “voice” of the first book falls away as Violet has to mature quickly as a rider. The ending was so intense, it raised my heart rate. I really enjoyed this audiobook, and I think I will have to read this in print as well.
The audio unfortunately goes in and out throughout the recording. It was distracting. I do like this narrator, but occasionally the voices of some characters (primarily Xaden) would sometimes change and make it a little confusing as to who was speaking. The narrator makes a great Violet. I commend the narrator for doing a great job bringing energy to the fight scenes. It enhanced the intensity!

It took me a little while to get into this one. I initially wasn’t sure about the narrators, but they grew on me. I ended up loving this book. The three separate story lines are very interesting, and I liked getting a sense of certain parts of history as well.

Historia
The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek have to scrap for everything - everything except books, that is. Thanks to Roosevelt's Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome's got its very own traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter. Cussy's not only a book woman, however, she's also the last of her kind, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy's family or the Library Project, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble.

Tragic and touching
Revisado: 06-07-21
This novel really gives you a glimpse into the lives and toils in Appalachia’s history. It is sad, but so much inspiration can be found in the quiet strength of the main character. The narrator did a really lovely job with the tone of the book and the accents.

Historia
Rowan's attempt to escape Lasher and his pursuit of her and their child are at the heart of this extraordinary saga. It is a novel that moves around the globe, backward and forward through time, and between the human and demonic worlds. Its many voices - of women, of men, of demons and angels, present and past - haunt and enchant us. With a dreamlike power, the novel draws us through twilight paths, telling a chillingly hypnotic story of occult and spiritual aspirations and passion.

Not as good as the Witching Hour
Revisado: 04-13-20
The beginning of this book was sort of strange. I did end up becoming captivated after a few chapters, but it took a little time.
Disclaimer: this is a disturbing novel. There is A LOT of incest and sexual situations with children/teenagers. It is much more jarring than the first book. It also spent a lot of time in some weird moments. Parts of it didn't seem as cohesive.
I did end up listening to all of it, and I mostly enjoyed it.
As always, Kate Reading is a fantastic voice actor! She is probably the redeeming reason why I still enjoyed this.

Historia
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

I didn't want it to end!
Revisado: 04-13-20
I loved this! First of all the narrator, Kate Reading, is fantastic. She does an incredible job with different voices and accents. Her performance draws you in and keeps you engaged throughout the 50 hours of this book.
Speaking of the length, I actually enjoyed how long it was. I was fascinated with the in-depth history and storytelling. If you enjoy detail and thorough explanation, this is for you. I found this novel to be captivating and could not stop listening.
As far as the story itself, I thought it to be interesting and unique. Anne Rice does a marvelous job weaving a story set in a world that is based just enough on what we see and know already. San Francisco and New Orleans are the two main settings in which this story takes place. It is clear that she draws on personal experience to aid in her creation.
I will say there is plenty of incest, but its not as prevalent as in some of her other books. She certainly doesn't shy away from some pretty gritty details of the family lineage, but it does contribute to the story. The second book in this series is a lot more disturbing. The only thing I find annoying (which is common throughout her books) is that everyone is painfully beautiful. It's like everyone is from a Hollywood movie. Not a big deal, it's part of her aesthetic I suppose, but I sort of find it redundant and silly.
All in all, I loved this!

Historia
Winter lasts most of the year at the edge of the Russian wilderness, and in the long nights, Vasilisa and her siblings love to gather by the fire to listen to their nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, Vasya loves the story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon. Wise Russians fear him, for he claims unwary souls, and they honor the spirits that protect their homes from evil. Then Vasya’s widowed father brings home a new wife from Moscow. Fiercely devout, Vasya’s stepmother forbids her family from honoring their household spirits, but Vasya fears what this may bring.

Revisado: 04-13-20
It took some time to get into this one. The first part of it seemed a little dry, and it dragged on.
I selected this novel after reading "Sisters of the Winter Wood,' which is also based upon folklore of a similar area.
I did end up getting into it eventually, and I enjoyed it.

Revisado: 04-13-20
Only Anthony Bordain could read his own book. His distinctive voice is what we all have come to know and love. The combination of humor and dark clear truths is what makes him such a compelling author and figure. As someone who works in the restaurant industry, there are so many little morsels within this that are even more enjoyable and appreciated. I highly recommend this to anyone who has not read it. I also would suggest anyone who has only read the print copy to give it a listen!
