This was one of the best Lynley novels I've read, with so much character development and so many plot twists. Great read!

Like Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs series, this is a novel of the effects of war on everyone involved, their character and their lives. Eleanor's strong sense of duty, of right and wrong, and her determination to be the predator if necessary to save herself, her family and her country from becoming prey put her in the middle of two World Wars, ultimately not knowing who she can believe or trust and who must be brought to account. I loved the Maisie Dobbs series and this stand alone novel has all the best qualities of the series, including the narrator.

DI Lynley never appears in this story, beyond Barbara's references to working with him, and we get an entire novel starring Barbara, who demonstrates insight, compassion, and courage. The context for the story is the reactions of the white English to the members of the Pakistani community in a seaside town in England, exploring the variety of relationships and the limited understanding. The plot twists until nearly the last page, in a well crafted story.

this story was darker than the previous books in the series and I initially felt that I didn't want to read it, but fortunately I kept going, and I was pulled right in. The strength of love and the human response to love or it's lack is explored through romantic, parent -child, and friendship relationships. The plot develops carefully giving weight to several possibilities without revealing the mystery until the end.

I read an Elizabeth George Thomas Lynley/ Barbara Havers novel to spend time with the characters and inhabit their world for awhile, as well as to appreciate the language and writing. This book delivers on all counts and especially includes Deborah and Nkata in major roles. The devastating consequences of FGM are a significant part of the story, and are part of the even larger issue of female identity. The plot develops along with our knowledge of the characters and keeps twisting right to the end. i looked forward to listening a bit more each evening, longer on the weekends, and was sorry to reach the end. Simon Vance was phenomenal as the narrator, expressing a range of voices, make and female, English and Nigerian. Very well done.

I began reading Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache series in December 2020, and read every book in order, spending hours each weekend in Three Pines. I finished all the books to date in May 2021, and while pleased to know another book was coming in August, I knew it would be months before returning to these people and place. This story also has many strands, all exploring human behavior at its best, worst, and most human.

I loved the previous books in this series about Purveen Mistry, the only lady solicitor in Bombay India in the 1930s, and this is the best yet. Sujata Massey evokes the world of India at that time so completely it was disconcerting to leave them at the end of the book. I particularly liked the exploration of the family relationships, the political strivings and tensions of the time, the details of Parsi custom and religion, and of course, Purveen's relationship with Colin. I hope the next book will be coming soon, this story is far from over. The narrator is excellent.

I began this book in December 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic and quarantines, and five months later I have finished every one up to last book published, the 16th book in the series, All the Devils are Here. I literally visited three Pines and joined these characters every weekend while I cooked, knit and rested up to take care of my grandchildren again on Monday. The books are superbly plotted with a final twist, but more than the plot, it is the exploration of the humanity of the characters, the values and fears and emotions that we share in common, that makes the books so absorbing, laugh out loud funny at one moment and moving to tears the next. Each book in the series also explores a social issue, historical or contemporary, and how we are all affected by this condition. It is a wonderful series to listen to, one after another, as the life of the characters continues to develop in each book.

this is the third Mary Russell book, and listened to immediately after books one and two, seems to be a seamless continuation. these first three books really explore Russell and Holmes, as
individuals and as partners in marriage and work. I'm listening to them again after listening to the entire series once or twice, and all the beginnings are in these three books. They've held up to the test of time, as intriguing and thoughtful and well written as my first reading, and even more so.
