not what I expected given the title and set up, but in a good way. fairytale/folklore done up in proper horror.

I cannot emphasize enough how little I enjoyed this book.

The plot was... ok? it wasn't the worst storyline I've ever read, but no impression is a good impression in this case. It tries very hard to be witty at times, which really just comes off as obnoxious.

The protagonist was also decent, but basically every other character was insufferable, although in the author's defense a LARGE portion of blame falls on the narrator who absolutely butchered this book. Reader took the wittiness and ran with it, and the whole book somehow come's off as kind of laissez faire, and it's hard to tell in places what the tone of the scene actually is or how high the stakes are. What really got me, though, was the character voices. Again, protag came off not terribly, but also I feel like a book whose primary character is a black man, a black voice actor would have been a better choice here. The side characters, though...

Every side character, apart from the women and the main antagonist, are done in weird, high-pitched "nerd" voices. Like, really cliché dweeb voices. Not only could I not tell who was speaking a lot of the time, but because the voices were so poorly done, it sort of came off like they weren't meant to be sympathetic characters. It was the sort of voice you use to make fun of some nerd who doesn't matter. At first, I thought it was just the scientists, and that they were meant to be portrayed
as inherently antagonistic, but it was also the layman characters close to the main character, so I really don't know. The only other character who really got a unique voice was the protag's best friend who was like, in his 70s. So an old man voice isn't a bad choice for him, but the narrator decided that in addition to being 70 years old, he's also an old timey, Appalachian gold miner, ig. Every single scene with him, in which he was usually the main character, all I could picture was Cookie from Disney's "Atlantis: The Lost Empire"

Thankfully, I got it for free, so I can get rid of it. Ig you get what you pay for.

generic characters with generic archetypes, a forced romance plotline that barely even makes sense for how little interaction goes on between the couple, political intrigue that barely gets resolved, and a scientific process that is so high stake and moves so fast that the resolution felt anticlimactic.

wasn't the worst book I've listened to, but it was far from the best

I really really love the premise, but I had been putting it off because it was by Lindqvist who I personally don't really like. It turns out I was right.

I made it 3 chapters before I had to stop. It probably gets better later on, but I just couldn't make it there. The characters are confusing and annoying, and nobody seems to be appropriately reacting to the situation, so it's just a bunch of seemingly nonsense scenes that neither propel the story nor give any actual insight into the characters.

What really got me though was the uncomfortably high amount of either sexual or vaguely sexual content in the first 3 chapters alone, which, again, have absolutely no bearing on the situation or the characters. In fact, it actually detracts from the story and undercuts the stakes and what little tension was able to be built amongst the domestic middling. 3 chapters and I already have the image of 2 separate men's penises and the smell of a child's backside? I'm out.

I'm not actually against sexual content in horror, but this is just meaningless and confusing.

haven't really broken into gothic lit yet but this was a strong first impression. the story, the local mythology and local witchcraft were very interesting. just an wll around great book

Ireally just loved the narrator's voice, too, specifically his voicing of Claire and Daisy, and Jess' aunt. just a great chain smoking southern crone voice 10/10

I also really liked how distinctive the other characters also sounded, particularly Titus

not the worst creature feature, not the best creature feature. predictable, standard action movie characters with their witty quips and one-liners. no complaints about the writing; it scratches the itch.

the narrator was below average, though. you could tell he was in his house bc he whispered all the yelling like he was afraid to disturb anyone with loud noises xD. overall he didna good job, especially the female characters, surprisingly. biggest pet peeve is the fact that he literally mispronounces the title of the story. Instead of "crevasse" he says "crevice" which I guess are more or less synonyms but it hits the ear wrong.

story and characters are solid. no complaints, pretty straightforward monster encounters which I enjoy, obviously.

My biggest complaint is the epilogue. it feels incredibly rushed and also like it's trying way too hard. it shoves a bunch of information to you in the last 2 mins which has no real payoff and just raises more questions that won't be answered because the stories in this series are unrelated. it also tried to impart some kind of life lesson which was unnecessary.

read the epilogue at your discretion, but I feel I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't, there is 1 loose end that gets explained but tbh it doesn't affect the story at all and actually kind of detracts from it.

as for the narrator - he intonates most of his sentences the same way which is irritating and makes listening a bit confusing because you can't really tell what tone it's in. he also mispronounces several words

i was not eager to read this. ive been on a horror kick and I'm very picky, and this wasn't really what i was looking for but it was free and i didn't have anything immediately better lined up, and most importantly it was the right length since i was looking at a 10h work day.

that said- this is probably the best audiobook ive ever listened to. idk if i would go so far as to say it's one of my favourite books period, but i can't discount it from the running, either. it would not have been even half as good if i had read it rather than listened to it. the VAs brought every single character to vivid life in a way that made it an actual challenge to remember that they were all voiced by the same people. or even that they were characters at all.

the story itself, while not the horror i was looking for was still horrifying in its own right, and i could see myself with disturbing clarity in almost every interviewee. this is probably the best example of a book showing what human beings are really capable of - more so than Lord of the Flies or Children of the Corn, or the Stanford Prison Experiment - because there's no one thing you can really pick apart. you can't look at the situation and say "well if they'd only had common sense" or "if they'd only done this" or "well, if it wasn't all upper middle class white boys" because from whatever angle you're coming at it, there's a character here showing step by step exactly what you would have done, and that's truly terrifying.

victor lavalle writes a perfect fairytale. i was looking for horror and this was not that, and yet i was hooked, even though the first half of the book was just a man living his life. a perfect new york gothic
