Historia
A powerful, blazingly honest memoir: the story of an 1100-mile solo hike that broke down a young woman reeling from catastrophe and built her back up again. At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. After her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she decided to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than an idea: vague, outlandish, and full of promise.

A fulfilling read - without being fluffy

I enjoyed Wild much more than i had anticipated. Always down to earth, Strayed kept me engaged from beginning to end (and the narration is en point).

Historia
It is said there are 99 Arabic words for love. Bea, an American exchange student, has learned them all: in search of deep feeling, she travels to a Middle Eastern country known to hold "The Astonishing Text", an ancient, original manuscript of a famous Arabic love story that is said to move its best readers to tears. But once in this foreign country, Bea finds that instead of intensely reading Arabic she is entwined in her host family's complicated lives - as they lock the doors and whisper anxiously about impending revolution.

Nice writing and imagery but lacking in plot
Revisado: 03-18-17
I find the best books are written beautifully AND have a plot that keeps you interested. I liked that this book explores Arabic literature (a topic I previously knew nothing about) but I find the love story weak.
Where is presumably meant to drive the plot forward, it feels unrealised and intangible.
A nice read but nothing too challenging.

Worth the hype?
Revisado: 01-18-17
Burial Rights is set in an interesting historical context (and i do appreciate Kent's research) but i am just not sure whether the plot lived up to the hype.

Historia
You live on a picturesque communal garden square, an oasis in urban London where your children run free, in and out of other people’s houses. You’ve known your neighbours for years, and you trust them. Implicitly. You think your children are safe. But are they really? On a midsummer’s night, a 13-year-old girl is found unconscious in a dark corner of the garden square. What really happened to her? And who is responsible?

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

I won't normally read or listen to sci-fi but i really enjoyed this. The narration is extremely engaging and keeps you interested even during the very technical parts. Would recommend to drama/thriller readers for something different.

Historia
Who is the real Sophie Stark? The Life and Death of Sophie Stark is the story of an enigmatic film director, told by the six people who loved her most. Brilliant, infuriating, all-seeing and unknowable, Sophie Stark makes films said to be more like life than life itself. But her genius comes at a terrible cost: to her husband, to the brother she left behind, and to an actress who knows too much.

Fascinating characters but where are they going?
Revisado: 02-09-16
A set of interesting characters whose lives are intertwined. I still dont know what the author wanted to achieve from this book although, if it is to paint a series of beleaguered people at pivotal moments of their lives, the author has succeeded. Entertaining but im not sure it will resonate with me long after the final page.
