A riveting narrative about the biggest earthquake in North American recorded history - the 1964 Alaska earthquake that demolished the city of Valdez and swept away the island village of Chenega - and the geologist who hunted for clues to explain how and why it took place.

Not really about the science
Revisado: 11-29-17
Although the subtitle of this book indicates it is about the science of the great Alaska quake, most is actually about the people affected by the quake. Just not what I thought I’d be reading

Historia
In May 2013, Glenn Greenwald set out for Hong Kong to meet an anonymous source who claimed to have astonishing evidence of pervasive government spying and insisted on communicating only through heavily encrypted channels. That source turned out to be the 29-year-old NSA contractor Edward Snowden, and his revelations about the agency’s widespread, systemic overreach proved to be some of the most explosive and consequential news in recent history, triggering a fierce debate over national security....

Good book on Snowden's revelations
Revisado: 06-29-17
Glenn Greenwald's book on Snowden's revelations. Excellent analysis of the surveillance state. A bit too much about Greenwald himself. Narration problematic when reading NSA memos; read headings not just text so point was often lost.

Historia
Here is the final book of unparalleled historian Tony Judt. Where Judt’s masterpiece Postwar redefined the history of modern Europe by uniting the stories of its eastern and western halves, Thinking the Twentieth Century unites the century’s conflicted intellectual history into a single soaring narrative. The 20th century comes to life as the age of ideas - a time when, for good or for ill, the thoughts of the few reigned over the lives of the many.

Philosophical Discussion of 20th Century Issues
Revisado: 06-28-17
High level, intellectual discussion of the 20th century by two brilliant intellectuals. Does not work well as an audio book for two reasons: first, it is dense and portions should be re-read; second, the book is, in part, framed as the conversation of two people. Unfortunately, the reader does not make it at all clear which of the authors is speaking, using indistinguishable voices for the two of them, so much is lost.

Historia
A brilliant and utterly original thinker, Andrew Solomon's journey began from his experience of being the gay child of straight parents. He wondered how other families accommodate children who have a variety of differences: families of people who are deaf, who are dwarfs, who have Down syndrome, who have autism, who have schizophrenia, who have multiple severe disabilities, who are prodigies, who commit crimes, who are transgender.

Great stories about differences - but way too long
Revisado: 06-28-17
This book is filled with wonderful anecdotes and stories about parents coping with children very different from themselves, ranging from severely autistic to criminal to geniuses. However, it is way too long, and the author - who also narrates the book -- goes into long discourses on identity which greatly take away from the book's impact. I finally skipped those sections.

Historia
In The Unwinding, George Packer, author of The Assassins’ Gate: America in Iraq, tells the story of the United States over the past three decades in an utterly original way, with his characteristically sharp eye for detail and gift for weaving together complex narratives. The Unwinding portrays a superpower in danger of coming apart at the seams, its elites no longer elite, its institutions no longer working, its ordinary people left to improvise their own schemes for success and salvation.

Great Explanation of What Became the Trump Phenomenon - Pre-Trump
Revisado: 01-19-17
Through anecdote and analysis, great explanation of the 'unwinding' of America due to the Great Recession, de-industrialization, rise of the Tea Party. Book ends about 2011-12 but is still relevant.
